We struggle with the same problem here in the UK...being a veterinary nurse I have made it my mission to try and educate owners on dog walking etiquette. We are due to move to Secret Harbour area in Feburary and my mission will continue. There is something the UK is slowly being adopted called the the traffic light system....might be worth a try? I feel your pain and frustration.

Blimey Elfie... guessing this is the "person" you have told me about before!?

Like your idea of a leaflet drop, but perhaps it is something that might have more effect if it came from the Ranger. Have you chatted to the Rangers yet or have they washed their hands of it.....? Ebbs is such a gorgeous woofer, but I can imagine that the sight of a "rat on a string" type dog would be like "a toy... a toy... let me at it" to her.

Not sure why people think the bigger the dog the more ferocious it is.... My large Lab is a softie as you know, but he was menaced by an off lead Jack Russell a couple of months back in the street on the way to the oval. Said Jack Russell owner thought it was fun for her teeth baring little sh*t of a dog to be snapping at Rolo's legs and going for his face, and then accused me of having a large vicious dog and then came out with "I know where you live ... I am reporting you to the Ranger...." Silly b*tch didn't realise I know where she lives too and I got in first with the Ranger! Feedback from Ranger was that she denied it happened and that Rolo was off lead! Fortunately Ranger didn't believe her as he has received many complaints from others and she was warned to keep her dog on lead when on the street. Along with other local dog owners, we don't go to the local oval any more because of this dog and its person.... such a shame.

But I digress..... let us know how you get on... Rossy

Very clever with the colored collars! One thing though, and it might be just on a computer screen, the color difference between "no dogs" and friendly" is quite hard to see for a colorblind person.

Hi Hunnie Bee

In a nutshell yes one of many in the area. Russel's are crazy dogs should know my dad bred them years ago and we left our Jackie back home with my son. They do not realise that they are a small dog. I think I will be ringing ranger good suggestion. This morning there was a Doris in park with a toddler and a Lab puppy about 4 months running free ::Sigh:: as the saying goes "you cant educate pork" but it was incident free.

And went to dog club last night for intro and the "specialist" class for Ebbz is run by a guy called Jim who is a Rottweiler lover and owner so I think happy days, someone with breed knowledge. First class tomorrow night.

Am presently making apple and carrot ice lollies for her she is suffering with heat today.

Love and licks to rollo x

Rolo is adorable, the jack Russell and its owner were obviously a problem.

A question though to Elfie, about what you expect of other dog owners. Are you saying no dog can be off lead, in a public place?

Is it seen to be unacceptable to have a four month old pup off lead with the owner close by? I thought they were meant to be at times as part of their training.

In in a park near me, I admire a group of owners who daily stand around chatting in the evening as their adorable dogs play together or just hang out/sit down calmly. It looks like an organised event but they just converge by coincidence on their nightly walks. I aspire to being like that and joining in, once I am lucky enough to get a dog.

I believe it's against the law unless it's marked as an off leash area. I don't let mine off the lead in public areas. I have 2 boxers and they just want to play. Not all dog owners have trained or socialised their dogs appropriately so it's just easier to keep them on a lead. At the dog beach or an off leash area I don't mind because I assume that the other owners are responsible enough not to let aggressive and unsocialised animals of the lead.

Sully, Rolo and me used to be part of a group like that until said feral Jack Russel came along..... most of us don't go now... such a shame as it disrupted such a brilliant social time for so many of us and our woofers..... Rolo and I walk elsewhere now and he is on lead unfortunately... well until we get to the beach at Port Kennedy and he just goes for it!!

Arwen Thank you hugely for being a responsible dog owner..... but unfortunately not all dog owners are as responsible as you and I and do not take any notice of signs advising that they should keep their canine friend on lead in certain places. I guess these are the same sort of people who do not have any social conscience either and just assume that they can do what they want, whenever they want. Losers basically...

People,I don't know much, but I know about dogs and whilst on 2nd reccie over hear in the hot place  I have really taken a good observation of dogs and their owners as we would be bringing our Pointer with us.

1,Ozzies are not very bright with dogs

2,Dogs over here are treated as animals in the main not as pets

3,They seem to enjoy their animals, but would never take advice on how to care for them

Elfie, you know about dogs, you get dogs, but as you also know. Most people haven't got a clue, please remember that.

Just a personal observation, from making a point of talking to as many dog owners as I can. It costs a small fortune to bring a dog over here. So would love to learn more from people.

Seriously!!! :biglaugh: That is sooooo American

How can you make such a general assumption about Australians as animal owners? Your comment is on a par with saying that all English people are vegetarian!!!!

Most people wherever they come from, if they are animal lovers, have a good knowledge of animals and how to look after them. The issue is that there is a small amount of animal owners who are ignorant, whatever their nationality and wherever they live ... and this is the point that Elfie and I are making.
