harvenus01
We arrive next month (family of 2 adults 2 children 4&8) we'll have around £10k or $18aud to get us started if our house doesn't sell before then and until we find work. With that we expect we'll need to hit the ground running. I guess what I'm after is for someone to tell us we'll be alright!!!..is this a reasonable amount to start with.. we expect it'll keep us for around 3 months however i can't see the both of us being out of work however casual that may be for that entire period so with earnings ( however little at the start) that may push us on a bit until we find the work we are qualified/ experienced to do. Does this sound ok..for that sort of time period? And also how hard is it to secure a say 12 mth rental at the start...perhaps without regular work?? Thanks for any help you can offer
Walkabout
Hi, Welcome to PP! Everyone cuts their cloth differently so it is always hard to say that yes or no an amount will be fine. However for your info we used a similar amount to what you are stating when we first came over (family of 5) and hubby didnt get work straight away. As for rentals, I believe it is much much easier now, when we got ours we just showed proof of funds (bank statements) to show that we would be able to cover the rent even though we didnt have a job contract. Personally, I think youll be fine! You might not be able to go out partying all the time or buy the most expensive of everything but you should be able to get yourselves sorted when you get here. Hope that helps and good luck with your move!
harvenus01
Thanks so much walkabout, I think I'm just thinking of something new to worry about every day! Hope this is normal and will pass soon. Thanks so much !!
elfie
The difference in funds one family needs to another varies depends on lifestyle where you want to live and if you already have employment when you arrive. For the first few months you will find you spend money hand over fist. Rental deposit - if you have no friends of family to stay with - driving licence mobile phone setting up of utility bills - yes you have to pay for that - My hubby came first we had just over $4k in the Aussie bank account. He had a job to go to I was delayed and came out 3 months later. By then he had also purchased our little car. Which we had for 18 mths only reason we sold it as it struggled to do the airport run with air-con full blast in summer - I cooked it once. We managed fine but then no children to think of and hubby had a job, I gained employment within 7 weeks of arrival. I applied for a job the day we moved in our long term rental and a week after interview I started work. It can be done on a very tight budget. nollie
We are coming next year and will have around the same amount, we will have shipped everything from the uk, and luckily have family to stay with on arrival, we budget hard in the uk (even harder at the moment) so we are just thinking it will be the same, and make sure we have a blow out holiday once we have settled and secure employment... (and by blow out) I mean spend just over the normal budget lol

marcozambini
That's great news @harvenus01 ! We're in a similar position, was looking very tight but just sold house, car and both got jobs so looking far more promising. We're just worried about finding a rental quickly as we only have accommodation for the first 3 weeks ATM!
