There is an IKEA with slightly higher prices than the UK but all the same stuff. Target - like kmart. We just brought minimum furniture - a piano and an old pine blanket box, coffee table my father had made, a wardrobe that now sits in the garage containing camping stuff! Bought lots of second hand or cheap stuff when we first arrived and have gradually replaced it when we bought our first house.

we sold all of our furniture, the only 2 decent things we have is our fridge and our bed which are going to friends. I really need to start sorting stuff out now :-/ so overwhelming at the mo. we have our kitchen stuff / toys / clothes, but sold all our big stuff.

Are you looking to just send boxes? that is an option for us, not sure on cost of this tho???? would love to know if you have investigated prices etc into this,

Just to offer a different perspective.

I think it depends on what you like. I hate new, contemporary furniture, have an interest in and a passion for utilitarian furniture, particularly Danish from the 50's and 60's but I'll go anything interesting from 1920's to 1970's Europe. For me Perth is amazing, all of our furniture is from second hand stores, verge surfing or Gumtree. We have pieces here that we would never have been able to afford in London - Robin Day, Eero Saarinen, Eames, Cadovius and a host of locally made - Danish inspired pieces that we've picked up for peanuts.

I suppose if you like Ikea and mass produced stuff then you're probably best shipping what you have but if you think different you might find some gems.

I think that's the thing, when we look around, we are currently selling all we don't need, and have not used for years, and don't want ie tents, sheds etc etc, that leaves us with stuff that to be honest all needs replacing, we will hopefully be staying with family for some time on arrival, and happy to have second hand from those expats who are returning home, or gumtree etc etc, its a tough decision that's for sure, and I am sure that if we had expensive furniture here we would bring it. but not sure its worth the cost for the stuff we have?????? the toughest decision so far

This is my current thought on what I am taking, ( more for my benefit!)

Beds

bed side units/drawers ( maybe not wardrobe??, but is matching set, but aware alot of aussie homes have fitted ones established)

Kitchen table

sideboards

chairs

All kitchen stuff ( really wish I take my herbs, I hate replaces them, such a pain when you go to cook and don't have what you need!)

Kids toys

Kids outdoor toys

Clothing vaccum packs ++++

**** loads of boxes of paperwork ( anyone know how long you have to keep bank statements/credit card stuff for?, or does it not matter now everything is now online? or stuff for tax purposes, as would love to get rid of loads)

Boxes of photo's

Sentimental stuff

Art work/photo's

Computor/lap top.

Bookcase

Kids bedroom stuff/cot's/ beds.

? bikes

Oh my god!! I am not looking forward to this stage....exciting but I can feel some mega lists developing!

It was such an easy calculation for us. We would probably barely get anything for our stuff. Millions of beds, tv's, closets, tables etc are sold on our local ebay/gumtree.

Buying a new bed, couches, tv, audio sets, desks, washing machine, dryer, computers would already be more expensive.

We came with a lot of stuff, but now looking at it we want different furniture.Things we came with dont go with the houses here. Some bits ok.

I know we are bringing everything, hubby will not part with stuff easy. That is half the problem furniture is right for this house but until its in it's place in the oz house you never know. My head is full of what to each room and what each room will be for etc etc. I have been buying Portmerion, worcester and moorcroft as I may never get it again, take it for granted in the potteries need a container for the crocks.

yes that's my only issue, all our stuff is old and already second or third hand ( apart from bedroom furniture) and not really anything we like, but I am thinking when we get there, we will be in rented for some time and I don' t really want to buy anything until we actually know where we are going to live in the longer term. Also, I thought it would save us some cash initially when everyone is saying you are already spending a huge amount. I guess we ill way up to container price nearer to the time.

I love all that stuff too, and I much prefer quality recycled furniture to IKEA etc. I'm amazed you have picked up Danish style furniture for next to nothing! Any tips?

There are some great little shops around that I drop into once a week and they have my contact details and call me when something interesting comes in. I also scour Gumtree more or less every day.
