multi centre visit

Recommended Posts

I'm not sure if I've found the right place, but my wife and I are travelling over to Australia for a months multi centre visit in March and it would be great if we could find someone, or even just chat here with folk who know their way around. Or if your up for it meet us when we get there and show us around for the day.

We will be arriving in Perth and then moving on via Alice Springs , Brisbane etc ( the full itinerary is still in the planning) There seems to be so much to do and perhaps we don't appreciate the size of the place, and that's where we need help.

Thanks everyone

Ted and Sandra

Welcome to PP.

Post up your dates and where you might be staying and there might already be a meet up organised. Tell us a bit about yourselves and I'm sure you'll find likeminded folks who'll be happy to give you the Perth lowdown.

Thank you for your reply were still in the final stages of planning but will update when we know. id much rather get to the the place from someone who lives there and their reccomendations rather than ending up on an organised trip by the travel agents

As for us were Ted and Sandra , both in our 50s from the Uk lake district. both retired.Ted is an early retired police officer. with recent circumstances we though "sod it" were going on a trip of a lifetime so we just acted on impulse and decided to go to Australia, thus the sort notice and not quite finished itinerary.

So is it just a hol or a recce with a view to moving permanently?

I might be a little biased but you should certainly add Fremantle to your itinerary, it's the centre of the known universe.

A month isn't much time to see such an incredible place, you could do a month in WA and still not experience everything it has to offer. We've been here 4 years and have hardly scratched the surface of just this state.

Extend your trip by another 5 months and live a little, it's amazing. Whatever you do, you'll have the most incredible time and I promise a warm welcome from Freo.

Its a holiday....... somewhere we did think of moving too but our circumstances changed as the years went on. i know a month isnt going to be enough and its been very difficult to decide what to do in fact we've had to be selective in the things we DONT want to do.. oh and yes i plan to see fremantle

Hi Ted/Sandra

Good things to do:

Aquarium

Rottnest island

Winery/chocolate factory in swan valley

Perth city and river cruise

Cottesloe beach (my personal favourite)

Freemantle and one of the chip shops

How long you there for? I could go on and on...

p.s. lots of things to do also do not involve money, such as walking on the beach at sunset, biking round the river, sitting in the shade with a beer or two, spot of fishing perhaps, the rules are not as complex as they are in the UK

Dont think that you need to do loads of paying activities

That exactly why I thought'd ask and Im only too sure the travel companies will sell us a trip somewhere. when we could have caught a bus or hire care to go ourselves

A month isn't very long to see the different cities of Australia if you are planning on driving between them. It would take about a week to travel from Perth to the east coast and a lot of it would be desert. It would be far more practical to fly at least that leg. You could more easily drive between the cities on the east coast.

Is there anywhere you particularly want to see in Oz on the trip? Timing can be imporant as well as some things are best done at particular times of the year.

We did a month in Oz 15 years ago. We never made it over to WA or SA and the trip was full on! We only visited the east coast and didn't incorporate a stop over.

We flew to Sydney and had 2 nights recovering from our jet lag before flying out to the Uluru (Ayers Rock). We spent 2 nights, 3 days there walking The Valley of the Winds (where we got engaged!), the Olgas and Kings Canyon. We then flew

to Brisbane and spent a week staying with friends, seeing Brisbane and incorporating a 3 night stay in Fraser Island off-roading and relaxing. We then flew to Cairns and spent a week in Port Douglas which is really worth a visit. Fantastic hotels and restaurants, great access to the rain forests and the Great Barrier Reef. We loved it there. Then we flew to Melbourne and stayed with family on the Mornington Peninsula, visited all of the coast and the city as well as seeing the Fairy Penguins (you can also see them on Penquin island in Safety Bay, Rockingham, WA). Finally we headed back to Sydney for New Year and to see all the sights.

It was a very busy month and we still didn't get to see loads of places! I would love to go to the Whit Sundays, Northern Territory and see the rest of this beautiful country!

We went to Esperance a couple of weeks ago. It's quiet but stunning! The beaches and sea colours are amazing and if you like off roading and walking it's a beautiful part of the country.

Although this site is full of Brits wanting to migrate and expats in Oz I'm sure they will be a wealth of information and have lots of tips and hidden treasurers on where to visit! I'll definitely be following this thread [emoji6]! I bet you'll wish our have decided to come for 6 months not one! [emoji1]

could I experience the "outback" without necessarily going to Ayres rock? It seems that its mostly trekking there and we dont want to do that.. i appreciate its a must see (but its just a rock ..lol ) I'd only want to go for the outback experience

Yes, one place that doesn't get a lot of attention but is worth a couple of days is Kalggorlie.

You can drive it from Perth - takes about 8 hours or a very short flight.

It it has a number of attractions such as a tour of super pit - a massive mine which is actually in the town. There is a mining museum which allows you to go underground. A lot of the buildings are really pretty and it is based in the outback. One of the most popular tourist things is a bit of an odd one - Langtrees. It is a brothel. It has been there hundreds of years and still operating and actually gets coach parties and they do tours (nothing naughty is seen). I think the gold museum also lets you have a go at prospecting.

That's massive. TBH I'd scale that right back otherwise I think there's a danger that you'll get saturated and exhausted. With respect, I think you're trying to pack in a huge amount, that is an awful lot of airports and with the exception of Changi, lets be honest, they're pretty dreadful places.

I'd probably go with VS's suggestion and fit in a trip to Kal. A month and I'd be looking at landing in Sydney for 4 or 5 days, then a short hop to Melbourne for the same time then head over here, pick up a 4WD/camper and drive out to Kal for a couple of days then work out a circular route going south to Pemberton sort of area, stopping and camping on the way and back up to Perth for a final few days. If you don't fancy camping then you can manage it all in a regular car and you can easily plot a route with some interesting places to stay.

That will give you a pretty good fix of cities and the cultural and climatic differences of this landscape, a decent amount of bush and an understanding of the vastness of Australia. Perth is both beautiful and chilled so a final few days here to unwind, enjoy beaches, parks, culture and history and I think you'll have some amazing memories.

Everyone's going to have a different opinion but I'd give careful consideration to your current plan, you might want to get home for a holiday after that^

I like Porties idea. I would add if you were going to do Kal by camper van there is a little place that you could add on to have a real fast of the outback. About 6 hours drive from Kal is Wiluna. A tiny dot of a place and a mainly aboriginal town. But pretty safe and without most of the issues that confront many other towns. It also has a small camp site for vans and things.

The he reason I mention it is that it has some interesting things.

It it is the home of the famous rabit proof fence. It is the site of the first drill rig used to look for gold in WA - it is still there and now housed in what was the morgue from the 1800's. It is the point of the last uncontacted aboriginals to be contacted. It is surrounded by four of the most important wildlife reserves in oz.

To to get there you also go through several other little towns including the now almost ghost town of which is famous for being the home of loads of sculptures by the world famous Anthony Gormley.

thank you everyone for your replies and advice.its been most helpful

it is a case of trying to see as much as we can in such a short space of time.. thats one reason we don't want to pre book trips before we get there. As on the day we may see something else we want to do and do it in out own time. i sure there are plenty of local firms or guides wiling to take us out for the day in any of the towns..

as for the camping/ campervan thing .. we have a caravan here at home but this time we want someone to take us around!
