JoeB
Hi guys, My first post here so please bare with me. I'm a single 22 year old guy from Newcastle. I've been offered a job in Perth in the last couple of days. I'm nearly all set to arrive, but I was just wanting a little interaction with people who have made the move and have first hand experience of life in Perth before I make the jump! Theres a few things I want to ask, firstly about money. The job I've been offered is $75k basic however I will be travelling for around 60% of the year and this should see my salary doubled. How comfortable would I be with this salary? I was reluctant to mention my wage but it's the only way I'll gauge how good it is. My offer contains housing allowance of $400 per week for property rental, obviously I can contribute on top of this too. I'd like a car to get around but it isn't essential I suppose, how expensive are they exactly? Secondly, as a young single guy where would the best place for me to get a property? Obviously I like to go out, socialise and have the odd beverage of the alcoholic variety. I play Saturday league football here at a reasonable level and I would like to continue to do this. Ideally I'd like to live in an area which has a lot going on the majority of the time as when I'm back in Perth I won't be working so I will have a lot of spare time on my hands. Finally, how easy would it be for me to meet new friends? I think this is probably the most important thing for me. I'd imagine if I joined a football team that would go some way to helping me. Just for reference, I have a hardcore love for Newcastle United too! if you could answer any or all of these questions it would be most appreciated. Thanks a lot! I havent made the move yet, but started visiting Perth at a similar age to what you are now and still enjoy it at nearly 40 (having been 8 times!) Your salary is very healthy in my opinion You will find second hand cars quite expensive, they seem to last forever! So, some on this forum might say to look at new, I guess it depends how long to intend to stay in Perth Property: well, thats a tough question to answer here with limited info, I am inclined to say the city, but you will find plenty of things to do south of Perth for a more relaxed time in your downtime, I will let others on this forum answer this for you Friends: you could not be in a better place! The aussies and people living in WA are EXTREMELY friendly, this will be a non-issue The only advise I could give you is to support a proper football team....!!! (kidding!) Good luck and keep us posted Richard
Scot01
Areas to look at - Subiaco (good football club), Leederville, Mount Lawley, Scarborough - best places for young and single, near to the city with a bit of life about them. Check out this for everything football - http://www.footballwest.com.au/
Nic964
Hi just to back up the previous person, thats a very healthy salary, so you will have no problems here. Cars don't need to be expensive. Because of the migrant workforce here in WA, there are alot of cars for sale, as people move out of region. Gumtree is best in my opinion. My limit has been $2K, and there's loads of choice at that range. Maybe not the most modern, but large local cars like Falcons, or smaller imports like Hyundai excels. you need to pay Rego which is $600/yr , but that does include 3rd party insurance, so you don't have to take out extra, but if you do again its not expensive. Best of luck, we've been here coming up for 3 years, and love it. Nick

Joe It's not a call centre job is it? It doesn't involve someone calling himself Daniel Larkin does it? You haven't been asked to pay a fee in advance or provide bank details? Don't want to alarm, just checking
verystormy
Can you give us more details as it sounds like a sales role. There are not many of such roles that qualify for visas. What visa are you intending to come on? the reason we are being cautious is that there have been a number of young people scammed recently. You say the role involves a lot of travel, what sort? elfie
As Stormy says there are scammers out there don't part with any money if they ask until you investigate further
JoeB
As Stormy says there are scammers out there don't part with any money if they ask until you investigate further Thanks for the replys so far most appreciated. It's not in sales and no I haven't been asked to hand over any details as of yet. I work in oil and gas and it's for one of the leading companies in my field, so no worries on this one. the travel involves covering most of Aus, NZ and occasionally Malaysia, Singapore etc. Once again, thanks for your concern but this is legitimate! portlaunay
That's great news, unfortunately we learned of a scam that seems to be operating here in Perth so it's reassuring you're not wrapped up in this. What visa are they offering? Just a heads up, BP have just announced a lot of job cuts here in Perth and O&G is suffering a similar fate to mining so proceed cautiously, regardless of the size of the organisation. There have been a lot of redundancies, even for those who thought they were onto a sure thing. So, after many years in their role they find themselves unemployed and needing to find an alternative sponsor in a very short amount of time. Its a temporary skilled visa so I'm sponsored for up to 4 years I believe. My job is quite niche and it's only really Europe that is affected by the oil prices at the moment for my sector. The fact there's 2 positions opened is quite encouraging too. If the worst happens after a short time in Australia im sure enough that I could find something elsewhere. In my opinion this is a bit of a no brainer. Once again though, thanks for your concerns though much appreciated. Could you point me in the right direction in regards to any of the questions I originally asked if you can?
JoePerth
You'll be fine on that salary. And as a single guy, go for the opportunity. Yeah there's a downturn coming but if you're comfortable with being able to move on if the worst happens then what have you got to lose. Subiaco is a good option. As is leederville, mount lawley and Cottesloe. Or you could even look at the city centre apartments. Your rent will be close to double your allowance but you'll be able to afford that. Plenty of football teams about in all those areas as well. Get foxtel or head to northbridge and you'll be able to catch plenty of newcastle games. Dont make the mistake of moving further out North or South just to get more for your money, you'll feel very isolated. And why come all this way just to live out in a housing estate? intruiged as to what you do that is so niche?
portlaunay
The job I've been offered is $75k basic however I will be travelling for around 60% of the year and this should see my salary doubled. How comfortable would I be with this salary? A lot of people get by on an awful lot less. Whether it's enough for you is impossible to answer, it depends entirely on your lifestyle. Whether it's right for your role is also impossible to say without knowing an awful lot more. I'd like a car to get around but it isn't essential I suppose, how expensive are they exactly? Between around $2k for something that's drivable and over $1m for an Aventador. Sorry, don't mean to sound like a _____ but Carsales.com.au will give you a good idea for something that suits your lifestyle Secondly, as a young single guy where would the best place for me to get a property? Try Realestate.com.au for what's available. As for location, well that depends on where you want to be based - close to work? What sort of commute do you want? City, surf, bush, suburbia, big house, small apartment, pool etc etc? Finally, how easy would it be for me to meet new friends? I don't think you'll have any problems but personality is, of course, everything. Northbridge, Freo, Subiaco all have a pretty vibrant nightlife and there are loads of festivals, clubs, live music etc to keep you amused. I have a hardcore love for Newcastle United too! Oh dear, never mind it's only really Europe that is affected by the oil prices at the moment for my sector. Really? Who told you that? BP Kwinana, just south of Perth has just axed 160 jobs and there will be more to come. The resources sector has been hit hard here and will continue to. The terms of your visa means that if you do lose your job then you will have 90 days to find another job in a company willing to sponsor you otherwise you will have to leave. I don't mean to be the harbinger of doom and I sincerely hope it works out for you. If I were you I would go for it but please enter into this knowing exactly where you stand and what the risks are. This is a very volatile market at the moment, you might want to have a read of this; http://www.theaustralian.com.au/national-affairs/oil-price-slump-hits-mining-and-resources-jobs/story-fn59niix-1227187649286
JoeB
Thanks for that info. By my sector I didn't mean oil and gas I meant more in line with what I do. Legislation and laws state that what I do, pipeline inspection, has to be completed after certain timescales. However, yes, what you're saying about the oil and gas industry is very true and it's very grim for a lot of people at the moment. Thanks a lot for all your help, greatly appreciated. Sorry if I've sounded blunt, up my own a*** or anything like that...not intentional at all!
JoeB
Well, that's my 457 visa sent away for. I accepted the job offer a few weeks ago and a start date of august has been agreed. Can't wait to meet some of you and experience the lifestyle. Thanks for all the comments, they've proved to be quite helpful.
newjez
Well, that's my 457 visa sent away for. I accepted the job offer a few weeks ago and a start date of august has been agreed. Can't wait to meet some of you and experience the lifestyle. Thanks for all the comments, they've proved to be quite helpful. I would just suggest that you be careful Joe. 457 visas can be fragile. You are more vulnerable than most. Although, they are best suited to young and single. The advice above is pretty sound, assuming your offices are in the city centre. Cars are more expensive, but you will save on the insurance. It is unusual for someone to secure a role from the UK, especially at your age. You may find you are replacing people earning much more than you. Enjoy though, you're only young once.
JoeB
Thanks for the advice newjez. The main reason I've been hired as there is a shortage of people in Australia in my profession, however that's not discrediting what you're saying about replacing someone who was earning more...valid point. I'm looking at the whole situation, with the 457 visa in mind, that I'm young, single and happy with the deal that's been offered so I thought I may as well go for it when I have the chance. Cheers
