Guest echo
Oh dear...not one taker eh? Looks like a games club is going to be harder to get off the ground than I first thought...

Guest BullcreekBob
. The Bridge Club in South Perth seems to still meet though so that's something. G'day Nat So are you a bridge player?
Guest echo
Crikey - I really ought to check my email more often - will change it on this one as I keep missing these messages! No I'm not a Bridge player - but my other half who's coming over soon is - he's majorly into it so I'll get him to teach me and I'll play socially (as opposed to him who pays competitively). I'm more into backgammon but nobody else seems to be! Canasta I enjoy too - I just like games... :-)
Guest BullcreekBob
...as opposed to him who pays competitively... G'day If he's of a good enough standard I'll give him a game when he arrives and introduce him at one of the local clubs.
Guest echo
Oh he's good :-) What's the age range at the local clubs here SOR - he's in his early 30s - anyone else around the same age?! Once he gets here I think the first stop will be the Bridge Club in South Perth since that appears to be the local one. He may see you there?! Still waiting on his visa - hopefully we're into the last few months now...
Guest BullcreekBob
Oh he's good :-) Yup, it's a common trait of Bridge players to think they're good. I think I'm good too. :) What's the age range at the local clubs here SOR - he's in his early 30s - anyone else around the same age?! Once he gets here I think the first stop will be the Bridge Club in South Perth since that appears to be the local one. He may see you there?! I'm an "older" player, having just turned 50 and I've been playing on and off for quite a while. Like in many places the age range of Bridge players varies from the teenagerss to octogenerians. South Perth is a fine bridge club, mainly older players and like most of the clubs here, he will need to turn up with a partner pre-arranged. I know that many UK clubs arrange partners for people just turning up, but that is not usually the case here. Does he play in the clubs in the UK? What is his EBU rank? When in the UK I played a bit at the Young Chelsea Bridge Club or The Acol club in Hampstead but mainly I played in a few of the casino's in the West End. Guest echo
Hi Bob - I'll ask him and get answers direct from the man himself to your questions. I believe - but will get confirmation - that he played at a UK National level and just missed getting picked to play for England for the juniors many years back. His parents also play and have won plenty in the veterans' league. He played for his University too (Warwick) if that's anything to go by - but as I say, I'll ask him when he and I next catch up (most likely tomorrow one would hope, it being Valentine's Day and all that). I know nothing of Bridge but I shall certainly enquire!
Guest echo
...I should probably add that he's actually been in the USA for 10 years so hasn't tapped into the UK Bridge scene for at least that long. He plays a lot of poker out in the US but the Bridge scene isn't nearly as active out there from my understanding - at least not where he is. Anyway, I've forwarded on your post via email to him so no doubt he'll come back with some answers in due course. The Chelsea Bridge Club sounds familiar - perhaps that's where the UK trials were held way back? I'm sure he's played there - but we're going back some years now. He left the UK when he was 22? - something like that anyway. Do you play poker also? I'm sure he'd love to keep that love going! At the moment the guys at his place of work all pool in say $40 (which buys say 2 hands) so it's a limited monetary outlay - then they've got kill pots and well I don't know how it all works so I'm not going to give half a story - anyway, it's something else he'd like to do I'm sure, if the opportunity presents itself - that and tapping into a decent Pool club. I've found one down at the end of the Manning Road so I may well check that out in the meantime... More in due course, if not sooner. Guest echo
Ok - having sent him your post Bob, I got this in reply: I've played at the YC too. I think I'm something like a 1/4 green short of being a regional master, although I may have got that in some random swiss teams I played in some time, but obviously I haven't really played in many EBU events since 1997. ----- Does that give you any idea? Means nothing to me. He says he wants to train me up so I can partner him but while I love cards and games, he plays to a different [higher] level across the board. If you fancy inviting him into a partnership for a trial run I'm sure he'd welcome it. I would welcome passing on your EBU rating etc. in return for his. Guest BullcreekBob
G'day Since moving here I've lost my rankings in both the UK and The Netherlands, where I represented Rotterdam in the national trials. Here in Australia I'm a Life Master where I play state level bridge and I have played at national level. I don't normally play in clubs but I'm happy to do so and to introduce a "newbie" to the scene.
Guest echo
thanks Bob - I'll forward your info on. Apparently I'm going to be partnering him (!) but honestly, I think he'd welcome partnering someone good (I'll do the social thing occasionally) - he gave up in the USA after his Bridge partner there moved - and essentially lost his interest in playing at that level subsequently. I'd like to see him playing here to a high standard once again. He remains in the non-modl queue for visas (applied in August) so it could be some time yet before he's over. I'm pitching May as the most likely but he's in the hands of a desk-bound soul at the Department of Immigration... In order to get hold of you, do you want me to just post on here and you'll see it? LMK what suits. Give him a chance to (a) get here and (b) get settled and then for sure I think he'll be in touch. All the best.
