Making the most of a 3 week trip to Perth! Suggestions please!

Hi everyone,

Me and my husband are staying with family in Perth, for 3 weeks in October. We hope to spend some time doing touristy things but mainly we would like to use the time to have a look round and gather information about the feel of Western Australia and whether it is right for us to emigrate there. We understand that a short break will never give a true representation of what it's like to live in Perth permanently, but hopefully it's more useful than just looking at pictures and reading stuff, right?!!

Does anyone have any suggestions about best using the short time we have there? (Tourist stuff or research stuff both useful!) We were thinking about speaking to estate agents re: more info on properties, suburbs and areas, having drives scoping out the feel of a few suburbs, maybe contacting some of the hospitals to have a look around (Should say here that I am a midwife!!)....

We have been contemplating a move for a little while now, so this would be the first major step in the process.

Thank you so much for any help or advice.

Dee xx

Scope out areas you might want to live - baring in mind it may also depend upon job location and commute. Visit the Malls in the area that you're looking at living - gives you an idea of the locals.

If schools are an option you might want to look at them - although depending on when you want to move - things/areas can change.

When you say you want to explore WA - how far do you want to go? ... You might like to visit places like Albany, Bussleton, Margaret River, Kalbarri

Tourist things:

Mandurah canal boat ride, Dolphin tours, penguin island, Rottnest, Freo markets, Fremantle Prison (different tours), Royal Mint, Kings Park (day and night), Cottesloe beach, Casino, Museum, Hillarys - if you've got children, Adventure world and the great escape.

I think a week in the South West would be beneficial. Apart from the obvious tourist delights of wineries and stunning beaches, you will get a good feel for life in this vast region. Bunbury and Busselton are substantial areas that offer good job prospects and quality affordable living. Both have excellent and rapidly expanding hospitals/health campuses.

October will be nicely warm so a good time to visit. Try and avoid any school holidays though as accommodation prices will peak.
