Bouncy
Hi all, I'm researching areas South of the river at the moment and an keen to find somewhere with a good community, stuff on for families and good primary school! Goid commuting distance to work would be prob no further north than secret harbour and no further south than meadow springs, so out of all the areas in between which is our best bet? Rent up to 500 ish per week, nice beach, surf club and stuff on for families!? Any advice massively welcome as my head is spinning!!!!!!!! verystormy
If you are going to be commuting by train, you might be better looking at some areas further south - Meadow Springs would be further from the train station than say Halls Head. Happy little Vegemite
Your search area seems a little limited, secret harbour sounds like it ticks the boxes as it has a surf life saving club, no idea what it's like to live there though, a bit like vegemite from what I've read on here. Mandurah surf life saving club is at madora bay I think, again no idea what it's like to live there. I agree with VS about further south (depending on where you are commuting to), we live in Halls Head (seascapes part) and think it's a great place to live! We're five minutes walk to the beach and park (with coffee shop just across the road) and the kids usually find friends to play with whenever we go up there. Kids are at South Halls head PS, which we're really happy with and we're a 10-15 minute drive to the train station (depending on traffic). Lots of sporting clubs around after school and on weekends. Only downside, I would say our beach is not great for swimming, but blue bay and doddi's going 5 minutes (drive) north or falcon and Avalon going 5 minutes (drive) south are great and kid friendly. Pyramids beach at Dawesville has a surf life saving club (10 minutes drive). Rentals, there seem to be quite a few around at the moment so prices look like they're coming down, we're about to move to a 5 bed with swimming pool for under $500/week. Feel free to PM me
Bouncy
Thanks @verystormy and @Happy little Vegemite, so much for these replies! Really the only reason for not going further south than meadow springs is just distance to perth if we need to go for anything! I hope to be working in mandurah though. I love the sound of secret harbour, what is it that makes it so "love it or hate it" I'm going to look at halls head and dawesville though is there a kindy there? Nursery? My kids are only 2 and 4 so need lots on for them both! A pool would be amazing but never dreamt we'd afford one!!
Deb
Rockingham beach is lovely and its a great beach for the kids.Dont know what school are like. The train station is only 10 min drive from foreshore.
Bouncy
Thanks @Deb, I'll have s look at rockingham too! Just had a look at halls head @Happy little Vegemite and can't believe the houses with pool for under 500 per week! How far is it from perth in car or train? We won't be going to perth for work so it's not too bad!
verystormy
To be honest, if you are going to be working in Mandurah, I would recomend you live there. Very few people drive to perth and instead get the train. It is 50 mins on the train. Also, cheap and given perth are considering a congestion charge, that traffic can be a nightmare and parking very expensive - up to $10 an hour. Think more about the train. You will also find that, while you will go into Perth a fair bit at first to do some of the tourist things, as you go forward you go less. We are going in on Saturday and it will be my time in the city since the meet up in February - so about 4-5 times a year at most. Mainly for something special such as a concert. Halls Head is a very popular suburb of Mandurah. It is about a 10 minute drive to the train station and then 50 mins to Perth. Actually about the same as Secret Harbour as Secret Harbour would be a longer drive to a station. Rockingham would be marginally quicker by maybe 15 mins. But, Rockingham can be rough - last year voted the most bogan place in Oz. (Bogan is the oz version of chav).
rmsehd05
Hello I'm moving to Perth in January. I have a degree in geology and have heard that the mining industry has a wealth of jobs. I would be looking to hopefully get sponsorship from one of these companies so that I could work in the country for a few years. My only concern is that I don't know what the job market is actually like in Perth, and how easy jobs are to come by. Could you please help? Thank you
TheMackemSlayer
I'm no expert myself but judging by other threads you'd best get yourself into the fetal position now and prepare for some harsh truths, @rmsehd05. Massive amount of lay-offs in the mining sector, apparently.

Currently unemployed for a year (except for a few senior contract roles internationally). Geologists in oz have one of the highest unemployment rates of any occupation any where in the world - currently close to 40%. I have personally had to lay off many young geologists even as a contractor - mines leave the dirty work to the contract geologist. I am am genuinely curious though why you thought oz had lots of geology roles?

TET68
Hi, I think the area you are considering is great. Ideally situated between Rockingham and Mandurah gives you the best of both worlds, which helps when you are looking for jobs and schools. we have a 4x2 to rent in Secret Harbour, close to Comet Bay primary and High school, shops and beach. If you want any more info please private message me.
townhouse213
Rockingham is a seaside suburb and Regional centre 47km SSW of Perth, and 28km South of Fremantle. To west of Rockingham lies the Shoalwater Islands Marine Park, with nearby Safety Bay being ideal for kitesurfing and windsurfing. A 45 minute train trip will take you into the heart of Perth city, driving is approximately 50 minutes but that does depend on the traffic at the time of day you are travelling. Mandurah is only 30km away (35 mins drive). This holiday town also has many features and attractions to keep the whole family entertained.
