RLPaterson
Hi, My partner and I are moving to Perth in less than 2 weeks and are looking at rental accommodation in the surrounding areas within a 30 minute drive of Perth CBD. Any advice would be highly appreciated!! We are mid twenties and moving over on a 417 working holiday visa. I work in Oil & Gas industry in Inspection and hoping to get as much work as I can and hopefully get sponsored to stay longer. Whats the formalities of securing a rental property within Perth? We have references from the UK and the bond (deposit) set aside for a place we like. We are looking at an initial 6 month rental. Budget for rental property is in the $500 - $600 per week range and require at least 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and car parking whether it be a house or apartment. Any recommendations of areas/suburbs to look at or any realtors we could get in touch with would be highly appreciated. Many thanks, Rory & Lisa
verystormy
For immediate short term rental, look at stayz.com.au For longer term, look at realestate.com.au Be aware, furnished places are pretty rare. Be aware that the oil and gas industry here have laid off a lot of people recently and to be sponsored your occupation must still be on one of the two occupation lists (SOL and CSOL)
RLPaterson
Thank you for the advice very stormy, will look into stayz.com.au realestate.com.au is where we have been looking at so far and have emailed a lot of realtors for viewing appointments within East Perth, West Perth, Subiaco areas for apartments and we have filtered 'furnished' properties only. Looked at some other suburbs and various areas within 30 min drive of Perth but we both need more local knowledge and recommendations as we have discovered some beautiful new houses within our budget for the same price as the apartments. If you know of any areas/suburbs to pin point that would be fantastic...? Yeah I've read that companies have been laying off a lot of Oil & Gas workers in Perth recently unfortunately. Tough times in O&G globally in certain sectors. I'm going into my new job with open eyes and we both have an understanding that could easily happen to myself. Yeah my job is on SOL and CSOL, which is fantastic so i'm going to try and push for that at the earliest of opportunities if all goes smoothly and to plan. verystormy
Given your age and things, I would look at Subiaco, Leederville and Fremantle as good areas. Fremantle is probably more than 30 minutes drive from Perth CBD, but probably has at least as much going on in terms of nightlife as Perth - if not more. It is also beach side. If your occupation is on the SOL, then I would recommend looking at skilled migration rather than trying to find a sponsor. There are LOTS of issues with sponsored visas. First, they are temporary, they are tied to the employer, so if you get laid off you only have 90 days to either find another company willing and able to sponsor - not every company can - or leave the country. There are many more issues. Finding a sponsor at the moment is also hindered by some of the requirements. For example, the sponsor must establish they have not been able to fill the vacancy with a local. I am in the resources sector myself. In the last financial year I managed to get about 3 months of work out of 12 and earned the grand total of $22k for the year!

Laz
Stay as close to the CBD as you can - Cannington isn't a young suburb, and isn't close. You'll be able to see when you look around what areas suit you.
lozzachino
Also be careful with 30 mins from the city - we live 30 mins from the city if there is no traffic but if you are commuting by car it takes well over an hour during peak times (6am-9:30am!!)
