TheMackemSlayer
Hey guys, Been thinking a lot lately and there's a good chance I'm going to have to settle for a pretty poorly paid job upon arrival in Perth due to not have Australian recognised qualifications. Quite tempted to just retrain in a different field altogether (currently work in the steel industry) and wondered whether anybody knows of any courses that don't take too long to complete and can result in a well paid job? And before any of the doom-mongers start, I'm not expecting to train overnight and become a pilot the next day. Just wondered whether anyone could suggest anything. P.S. I don'tind getting my hands dirty. Cheers in advance, Gary.

verystormy
Have you considered longer term training? Adult apprentices are fairly common here

Bibbs
Get your HGV / forklift certs?
TheMackemSlayer
Thanks guys. Stormy, what sort of pay rates are you looking at when doing an apprenticship though? I know over here the wages paid are ridiculously low and I'm worried I wouldn't be able to survive in Oz if the same on your end. Ali, what sort of training does nursing require? TheMackemSlayer
Bibbs, that could be a good shout. Forklift is something I'm gonna get within a week of arriving anyway. May be worth doing HGV licence. Any idea on average wage in that field?
Druid
Hairdresser, they paid a fortune over here and all drive around in fancy cars Dont do HGV in Uk! Its worth very little here so u going to end up retraining anyway
verystormy
Yes, apprentices are badly paid but once qualified earn a good wage. The he tickets you mention are unlikely to get you a well paid job as without experience they aren't worth a lot. HGV isn't like the UK as so many people have it. So, you would not walk into a well paid job with a HGV nursing would require university. A question though. What do you regard as well paid? TheMackemSlayer
To be honet I think it's hard to say until I've arrived and got a feel fot things. Looking on Seek, I generally see unskilled jobs with pay ranging from $20-$28ph, so anything above that would be okay I guess. Apprenticeship would obviously be ideal as you say, but trying to run a house on such a poor wage would probably be too hard. Any other suggestions? I am trying to change career and facing a similar issue. I was offered a role as a high school science teacher via a scheme that recruits senior scientists from industry, only to discover the first year salary is less than $20 an hour. I have been been looking for what you are looking for, for two years now. With little luck. So, am back at square one.
TheMackemSlayer
Yeah I guess it's gonna be hard mate. To be honest, I wouldn't mind working for say $25ph provided I know for sure that the role can lead to more. My main concern is finding myself stuck in a position I don't like and that has no progression opportunitues. Bit of a pickle.

FOL
What do you consider a bad and good annual wage? Wages are under pressure australia wide as far as I heard. I dunno I'm self employed
TheMackemSlayer
I don't really know yet, to be honest. Looking on seek I'm guessing around $50-60k is average and $60k+ is decent?
Sideshowdeb
There are some healthcare jobs that you can study for at TAFE (technical college) in the evenings, pharmacy technicians, anaesthetic technicians etc. Some of the courses are less than a year and you can fit them in around work. I work at Fiona Stanley Hospital and we pay our pharmacy technicians $60k+
TheMackemSlayer
See now that is a great suggestion. I would happily train towards a qualification around work times if possible.
JohnC
Hi mate, don't do any training in the UK as you will probably have to retrain to have the qualification recognized over here, there is a company in Perth airport that are forever looking for bodies, pay is around $25ph but its shift work, most people who work there are studying or training to be something else. PM me if you want more info.

Sideshowdeb
My wife is interested in completing the Pharmacy Technician course but it's over an hour away in Perth. Does any college further south have this course? Hi, I don't think it does run anywhere else but the pharmacy technician course at TAFE isn't the only route into the profession. It's not compulsory to have qualifications to become a pharmacy technician as it is in the UK. Another option would be to get a chemist job to get some experience and from that she could get an entry level G2 position at a hospital, where further training would be offered. At Fiona Stanley we run a one year traineeship where they learn on the job alongside attending TAFE. I'm not sure whether we'll recruit for that this year because of the job freeze but if your wife wants anymore information then please ask her to PM me and I will post on here as soon I'm in a position to recruit again.
