Ashlenelouise
Hello, only me, just a quick question, we're hoping to go to New York next year, just wondering if I can come and go as I please out of Australia? Or once I leave to New York I will have to apply for like a return visa? Or anyone know where I can find the information on? I've tried good old Google but no luck xxx

Bristle
On the visa you should have a valid to date which is 5 years from the start date. This means the you can leave and return at any time until that date. After this, if you haven't become a citizen, you would need to apply for a Resident Return Visa. Our visa was granted in April 2013 but is valid from December 2012 (the date of our police checks) so we can come and go as we want until the end of 2017. Hope this helps. Hi, are you able to explain this a bit more? I was not aware that the 189 only last 5 years, bit silly of me. So what happens at end of 5 years if you do not want to become a Citizen but want to stay? and what is this resident return visa? in what situation would you need that? Thanks Scott
Bristle
You have an initial stay date which is 5 years after the grant date. During this time you can travel abroad when you want to. After this, if you have not become a citizen, you will need a resident return visa to travel back into Aus should you leave, even if only for a holiday. If you never intend to travel out of Aus you can stay on the original visa as a permanent resident for as long as you want and have to do nothing. It is only relevant if you leave and want to return. Hope this is a better explanation. Edited October 31, 2015 by Bristle
