David82
Hi all I am looking to move over to perth in the next couple of months. I should complete the visa application process tomorrow for my 457 visa. I have a job with Hollywood Private Hospital in the Nedlands area of the city. I currently work in a hospital in Scotland and commute by bike to work which is a distance of 9 miles (18 mile round trip) and I plan on using a bike to get to work when in Perth. I am single and probably looking at renting a one or two bedroom place which is fully furnished. The two bedroom idea is so friends and family have a place to stay when they visit. I have looked at Perth accomodation and Mosman Park area appeals due to it's closeness to the beach and the fact it is only 30 minutes or so cycle to Nedlands. As I have only really looked at places close to the coast I am not sure where else would be good to stay. I would be looking to join sports clubs and be close to bars etc for going out. Can anyone recommend other good areas in the city to live- maybe close to nightlife, bars, cafes etc which is still within a cycle distance to Nedlands. Ideally I won't be spending much more that $400 a week on a rental. The cheaper the better though. Cheers

West Perth also. Subiaco in nice. Not cheap, but good city lifestyle. Leederville could also be worth a look. Scarborough possibly if you want coastal, good coastal bike paths. verystormy
You budget will restrict you a bit as Nedlands and most of its surrounding areas are the most expensive in Perth. Also, furnished places are not common here - they tend to be only short term / holiday lets and as a result very expensive. Have a look at realestate.com.au to get some ideas on what is available for your budget. One of the areas that would probably suit your lifestyle best is Fremantle. However, it is a LOT further than 30 mins cycle ride. But it is a short train ride and the train stations all have bike parks that are secure. Just not sure if you will get something for your budget. Bibbs
Your work is in the expensive hotspot of Perth. So Mosman, Pepermint and Cott are close, but expensive. I'd look a little further north, and a suburb or two inland.
portlaunay
I'd be amazed if you can find anything in your budget within Peppy Grove Mosman Park or Cottesloe and if you can, you'll be sharing. Try Leederville, Subiaco, Jolimont, all pretty close, a nice ride into work and there's lots going on around Subi. You'll probably get a smaller place within your budget but TBH I'd hold out on signing anything long term until you're here and settled. The market is in a state of flux with surplus rentals and tumbling prices. Get here and look around, in 12 months you might be able to get a penthouse overlooking King's Park for $400! Katie McGregor
I'd just started a new thread asking for basically the same thing as you although my office will be based nr Northbridge, should be arriving end of Jan/Feb time. A few people have suggested Fremantle to me as somewhere suitable for single 30-somethings, beach, bars, cafes, friendly, sporty although I don't mind commuting for an hour(ish) so not sure if its too far away for you to consider. Good luck! Edited November 18, 2015 by Katie McGregor
newjez
If you wanted cheaper you could look at Hamilton hill and ride to Fremantle station.
David82
thanks for all the replies. It gives me a few more areas to search out now on the map for accomodation. Hopefully get somewhere in the city. Freo looks good but one of the things I look forward to is cycling into work in the sun after cycling in torrential rain, strong winds and biting cold in scotland. I think Freemantle is just that wee bit too far out.

verystormy
As Ali says, you do know we get twice the rainfall of London? Then the sun can be far too hot. A 40c day is not pleasent for cycling!
portlaunay
Actually you could also look at East Vic Park or anywhere along the Kwinana Freeway corridor through Como. There's a great cycle path all the way along the freeway and along the river on both banks. The ride in from EVP would be amazing and around 45 minutes and the area is really cool with lots of bars and restaurants. As Ali and VS said about the weather you should also bear in mind that it's pretty darn windy here too. Riding from EVP you'd be against it on the way in and on the way home. Don't let me put you off though, you can see the cycle path in this shot with the city across the river. Not bad eh?
JoePerth
Perth is a great place to be able to cycle to work. Although the total yearly rainfall looks high it tends to come down in heavy bursts. I cycle all year round and rarely need to wear a jacket. Any of the western suburbs from Nedlands outwards would be a great choice and they also follow the train line for the days when it is raining. Rents have come down a lot recently so you should be able to find something reasonable without heading south
David82
haha yeah I know it rains in Perth but i think glasgow gets almost double the rainfall annually that Perth gets (some websites have it as 66% of the rainfall) hopefully the rain there isn't ice cold like it is here:wink: Edited November 19, 2015 by David82
KLO
You might struggle to find a place that is fully furnished - unless you are happy paying far more expensive short term let fees. It's just not very common here. You'd probably be better off getting unfurnished and paying $90 for Ikea to deliver a truckload of flatpack to you! Also, Mosman Park is probably going to be just fine, lots more high density homes there so you'll find something for $400 per week. It's a good location. And much cheaper than Cottesloe, but so close - also close to Freo on the train for a night out.
Clem Fandango
Hi, We're in Mosman Park and it's a great place to live. Unlike Peppermint Grove and Cottesloe there's a mix of accommodation and you can definitely get something under $400. Have a look on http://www.realestate.com.au. Don't be put off by the rain and heat comments on here. You should be able to ride into work 80% of the time. Spring and autumn is perfect cycling weather. Winter has rainy days but not like the UK. When it rains here it buckets down but then blows through fairly quickly so even in winter the number of days when you won't want to cycle isn't huge. Likewise in summer you do have 40C plus days and it won't be pleasant cycling on those days but it's more common to be low 30s and very dry so cycling would be fine on those days. Mossie Park is close to the sea, close to the river, is leafy with a good vibe, good cafes, a great bar (Rodneys), outdoor cinema, parks, great bike and walking paths and a real mix of people. There are a couple of dodgy areas but they're pretty small. It's sort of half Cottesloe, half Fremantle in it's feel and also the types of accomodation you can get. Great transport links as well. I'd consider North Fremantle, Subiaco, Fremantle or perhaps Nedlands as alternatives but I think Mossie Park is your best bet if you want to get a good balance of everything you seem to be looking for.
