Best Fish & Chips?

We went to one on foreshore in mandurah - I think it's a cicerellos. Fish was good quality but bland tasting and batter was ok but also bland. Chips were just awful. Oven chips as said above. Plus over 25 bucks for 1 f&c and extra portion chips plus two bottles of pop. On the plus side, the ice cream there is awesome and they have rainbow flavour which sent me right back to my childhood!

Agree. The great british chippy is v good, always stop off there if out on a jaunt NOR.

but we live SOR, so locally the London Chippy in Port Kennedy is good but more expensive and if ordering a meal with chips, you don't get many chips. Order your fish or whatever your having, then order chips seperate and you get a good portion!!

Also seen good things said about the pommy owned place in Wellard, but personally never tried it.

Our choice now for the past couple of years is a fish n chip shop in Rockingham. Not a pommy joint, but good value for money, big portions, lots of choice, real chips, plenty of different fish choice. Has won a few awards.

just yards from the beach. Great place to go too, get your food, walk to the beach and sit and watch the sunset.

I've found a few good ones, but I never got the whole minging curry sauce or vile mushy peas in the UK.

So what I class as good, isn't probably to Pom tastes.

I'm so with you on the curry sauce, that stuff is a whole new level of wrong. I don't think I'm that fussy, after all, it's not that hard to get right, I just want chips that at some point in their life resembled a potato.

I think I must have lived here so long that I now prefer Aussie fish and chips, because when back in UK earlier this year, I had fish and chips on a couple of occasions and was so underwhelmed by the soggy batter, chewy tasteless fish and inedible half raw chips on both occasions. One was a supposed award winning speciality fish and chip restaurant, and the other was just a local chippy. Never got the whole curry sauce, pickled egg, mushy peas thing anyway when we lived there, so stayed well away from that.

We had a family dinner at Joes Fish Shack in Fremantle last week and the beer battered snapper was perfect.... crunchy non soggy batter coating perfectly cooked fresh fish, served with chips that were crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, served with coleslaw.... now that was a nice change... I liked the coleslaw bit.

I have heard that there is a fish and chip shop in Rockingham near the beach that is run by a kiwi family that is pretty good, but I haven't been there.... yet.

Having lived here 42yrs I can't remember fish & chips in England, whether they taste better or not. But I had fish & chips at an award winning restaurant the last time I visited the UK & found them to be very greasy.

We also like the fish & chips at Joe's fish shack at Freemantle, although we usually go to the fish & chip shop opposite Rockingham beach. Very reasonably priced. We pay $9-95 which is enough for the two of us . . . two pieces of fish & enough chips.

They never served curry sauce or mushy peas when we lived in the UK but perhaps that only happens in the North of England.

Oh dear, it's turning into country 'battering' again. Having lived in England for 40 years I loved our chip shop that served haddock with crispy batter, lovely fish and non greasy chips....after half a dozen servings here I'm still waiting for anything that doesn't resemble a fish portion that looks like it comes from a box in the freezer department.[emoji3]

I know what you mean. The fish and chips we had in the UK were excellent - I particularly miss the one I went to in Middlesbrough which was ran by a little old lady that had been doing it all her life and still fried in beef dripping and used incredibly fresh fish. Crispy batter and wonderful flaky fish. Here they often look like the things that Jamie campaigns against.

I generally find the fish either tasteless or nasty - I believe a lot of it is shark.

Your posts are just as predictable on the other end of the spectrum. It's a shame you didn't like Great British Chippy at Currambine, many UK expats say it's the best they've had.

Like your replies Arwen, I could simply lie to people about 'my experiences' but i just can't do that. Oh by the way did you see 9 news the other night about the high spike in crime....I knew I wasn't dreaming. Have an awesome day Arwen.

I don't think anyone expects lies Keefo. I certainly don't and would rather people knew the truth. However there has to be some balance and that is what I don't see in your posts. I always feel sad that people don't experience the same Australia as I do which is the one that yes **** happens but there is plenty of good stuff too if people just top up their half empty glass to find it. On the other hand Australia doesn't suit everyone and I have seen many good people just say 'it isn't for me' and book their flights home. Nothing wrong with that, it would be a dull world if we were all the same.

As I said it's a shame you didn't like the Great British Chippy, I think their haddock is delicious :)

You obviously don't look hard enough or be selective in what you see. I have posted many positive posts about our days out and even loaded photos with the post. I have previously mentioned about the free festivals we've been to, the lovely days out at John Forrest national pk, Whiteman and one or two other more general parks. I've mentioned about the great days out at Scarborough beach, city beach etc. I have posted photos of when I was in my kayak having a great day at Point Walter. I mentioned about the great holiday we had down at Hamelin bay and the days out we had from there to Augusta and Dunsborough. I just think people don't like to see a so called negative post. I guess you're my equivalent of Weedolly when Stormy posts honest posts about his experiences doing FIFO.
