VISA granted - do I need an ABN number

Recommended Posts

Hi Everone,

We are new to Poms in Perth website and hope we can gain some advise please.

Our Visa was granted in November and are looking to make the move from the UK to Perth around June of this year.

My husband works as a carpenter here and we are coming over on the skilled visa. He has already obtained a white card as it was part of the visa process but we are a bi confused as to whether he requires an ABN?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Cara

Only if he is going to work self employed. You may be thinking about a TFN (Tax File Number) but you cant apply for that till you get here)

Hi Weedolly, thanks for your quick response!

He will be working self employed I believe as most jobs seem to be temp or contract based. Can he apply for the ABN before we arrive in Oz or is it the same as the TFN?

Thanks for your help

Kane you can apply without a TFN, but its best to wait till you have one. He'll get his ABN very soon after attaining the TFN, not all contractors ask for an ABN anyway, some even pay you super, (when they want).

He can start work right away and tell the people he is waiting on his ABN, you can apply online and he'll have it within a couple of weeks.
