working hours as a bricky?

Recommended Posts

A brickies hours of labour, from what I have seen in the last year in my area,

start on the lot about 6am- 7am and usually finish around 3pm. remember they have been working a long 7 or 8 hours, muddy, lifting, bending. usually 8 with breaks for 1 or 2 smoko`s even when they don`t smoke:smiloe:, and lunch.

the length of the job, is decided on the amount of the bricks to be laid, that`s usually how the job is quoted. Told to me by one of my old retired neighbours, who is a Pom.

If its raining heavily, usually they don`t work. As the concrete does`nt

solidify, stay together.

The hours are start 6.30 finish 3-3.30. Pay is, new brickies from eng who dont know their ways $250 once experienced $280-350. You get 45 mins break at 11 it gets up 43 in summer you get sent home if it looks like rain and you go home when its too hot. You can work sub contract for a house builder but you are more like the builder most you have to provide scaffold, mixer, water tub, hose, pack barrow etc. Prices are dropping on houses. But money on industrial work ok. thats about all you need to know.

I arrived from the UK a few weeks ago and am struggling to find any bricklayer work. I've over 10 years experience and already got my white card. Do any of you guys know of any work going at the minute?

Len Buckeridge, BGC building Company, has a reputation for supplying most of the bricklaying teams for almost all building work in any suburb in Perth. But I also suggest you try some of the country towns.

Karratha is going to be big in the future, but whether the companies building will use precast concrete for those I have no idea...Niche , is also one that comes to mind..But most of them are closing down for 3 weeks over the festive season.

Alkimos a relatively new suburb north of Wanneroo, is starting to be developed.....I`m not sure what`s going on at Lancelin Lagoon..sometimes when work runs out in the city, the brickies, head for Busselton, and places down south...

I agree with all the above, it's about 15 yrs behind in attitude so expect to be pushed hard and work like a brick machine! been here a few months as a Brickie, it gets very hot and by about 2pm you will be dead on your feet no matter how fit you are, the Aussie brickies are the same, get a 2.5 litre insulated water carrier to take in with you,

I've been told by the lads at work that it all shuts down over xmas and the subbies stop hiring early Dec til Feb so if you can just be patient hang on & you'll get something. there's loads of work in Perth city or have a look online at the small ads on gumtree or the western australian newspaper thats were I got a start.

Good luck

The brickies working for me tend to start at 6.30 and finish between two and four. Some come out on a Saturday, but not often. Most of the guys are looking for more men to complement there team, so if there are any good brickies looking for work I may be able to point them in the right direction.

We are busy in all most suburbs North and South at the moment. You should have no problems finding work, no matter where you reside in Perth. Can you not apply for P.R as opposed to sponsorship.

Hi everyone,

The wife and I are moving out to Perth in March and are both looking at securing employment beforehand ideally.

I'm a bricklayer and my wife is an admin officer. Any help you may give is greatly appreciated.

Cheers
