Hi we found a place in nollamara and planning to pay 6 months rent in advance. Is it normal to pay money before signing the lease? Coz we haven't seen what's in the lease. Appreciate your help!

I would expect to pay one months rent in advance and the same again as the bond. Unless there are lots of people after the property you are paying a lot of money up front when it could be used for better things. If you experience any problems you may have trouble getting any money back.

You are right Bristle. We didn't go with them and got approved for another property which asked only 2 weeks rent upfront and 1 month as a bond. So planning to go with them... thanks a lot for your response!

Can't speak for Perth but absolutely not.

In Sydney, you generally pay 1 weeks rent in advance to secure the rental. Then you bring a cheque/bank draft for the bond when signing the lease and you get the keys. You cannot be obliged to pay rent more than 2 weeks in advance but may elect to do so, ie my Real Estate does it a calendar month in advance by Direct Debit on the 1st of the month which works for me.

Why are you paying 6 months in advance? There seems to be plenty of rentals available in Perth to make it a renter's market.

Yes Collie as this is the first time renting in Australia we thought it will be very difficult to secure a place. But finally we got approved on a place for 2 weeks rent upfront and 1 month bond! Thanks for your response!!
