Hi there

Been lurking on this board for a while but never plucked up the courage to join and post but then i thought why not, whats the worst that can happen:unsure:

So here goes.

We have our Visa in place and now looking to make the move over at some point this year. We are coming out to Perth in February to visit family and have a look around at different suburbs.

For the last year in the UK i have been working in the community to support aged and disabled clients to continue to live in their own homes. I love this job and satisfaction that I get working with these people. Originally I was thinking that I would probably need to go back to my previous profession in HR and stuck in an office all day, but having had a look through SEEK the other night there does seem to be a lot of openings for similar positions around the Perth area. So i though i would email one of the companies who was advertising to see if with my experience and UK qualifications (HNC healthcare) whether or not I would be suitable.

Last night I received a lovely reply from the recruitment department saying that the cert 3 in aged care is not always needed and that they would be happy to chat further with me either over the phone from the UK or on arrival in Perth.

Needless to say I was over the moon that I even got a reply never mind the positive tone of the email.

Does anyone have any experience of these sort of positions? Some of the roles on Seek listed salaries as $25-$29/hr with double time on weekends/public holidays which is way way more than i get in the UK and we don't get any enhancements!

Knowing that I could continue in such a great career has certainly made me feel alot more positive about making the move now and i think I can actually say I am looking forward to it now

No experience....But if Perth is where you want to come and live there go for it....We have been here since July and have never looked back.... The job market is hard but there are jobs out there..

Thanks for this. We have family in Perth and have visited on holidays previously. I have also been to Adelaide and the Gold Coast and loved both those areas but we don't know anyone there hence we have decided to start in Perth.

Not sure what yor qualification is but a UK NVQ level 3 can be converted this equates to an Australia Cert 4 this gives good standing when applying for care work. Lot of community based work easy to pick up harder if you want to work in residential or nursing facilities. Lots of jobs working with disabilities community based. Downfall with community base hours fluctuates client illness, appt,s ect. If you have experience in high dependancy this will be good You can also privately advertise your skills to gain private paying clients the money for that is good, you will need a police check for all care work an Oz first aid certificate.

I have Higher National Certificate in Healthcare which i was led to believe by MA that is the equivalent of an Australian diploma qualification level 5???

I advised the company that I spoke with that I have a full Uk DL licence which I will convert, I will have be buying a reliable car, I have a Valid UK first aid certificate but more than happy to obtain an Oz one on arrival. These where listed as required. I also have a valid police check certificate.

Currently I work part time in the Uk (20hrs) and take on extra where i can. I usually work 2 sleepover shifts with clients as this is what fits best with family but i am totally flexible and more than happy to be taken on as a casual worker to start with until the family a re fully settled. I may even consider returning to University and doing a nursing degree.

I truly did not realise that this type of work was paid so much better than in the UK. Leaving my current role to go back to office work was having me dread the move.

hi there

Just also thought that it would be useful to give you some direct companies to follow up on... Rockybay. Identitywa.. Ability .. Nulsen.. Baptistcare.. Activ .. if you go to their websites they have career page with direct contacts. there are loads more out there.. and you certainly wont struggle to find work..

http://www.migration.wa.gov.au/services/overseas-qualification-unit

Check out this link as they are the Overseas Qualification Unit based in WA and will assess your qualifications and issue you a certificate to state what Australian Qualifications yours are equal to. This is a West Australian government department so the assessment is legal and acceptable by all employers. The Unit used to be run by the Dept of Education and Training, but during a government reshuffle, moved over to Migration WA (also a WA government dept) a couple of years ago.

Let us know how you go please as this will help others in your situation.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have just returned from London and was shocked to hear how low the pay was there for home social care.

My grandfather has had two carers in and out each day. They receive no travel time, zero contract, no benefits and if they were able to get a company car, they had to pay the £1500 insurance! I don't know how they survived on £7 odd an hour and definitely no double time for Sundays!

They are all so lovely too.

If you are looking for a place to live, I have a house in Mullaloo (furnished or unfurnished now).

You can find it in real estate to rent on this site.

Best of luck with it all
