Belindajv Posted January 4, 2017 Report Share Posted January 4, 2017 Hi all, please help. We are moving to Australia June 2017. I have family that I can stay with in Burns Beach, WA. My daughter will be in year 9 this year. The schools within their catchment area (Kinross College and Oceanreef Highschool) both seem to have bad reviews on the internet. Is both schools so bad and if so is it better to just rent my own place? Then which school would you recommend between Duncraig /Carine/Mount Lawley? Our eldest is starting year 9 in Feb - we move next Tuesday, and we are hoping to rent a house south of the river so we can send her to Rossmoyne Senior High School, we looked into lots of schools and found this to be one of the best. It's a tough one, we were careful to make sure our choice of area is close enough to hubbys job in CBD while close enough to a good school. Scot01 Posted January 5, 2017 Report Share Posted January 5, 2017 If you wait a few days the high school league tables will be out for last year which gives the exam results of every high school in WA. If I remember I will let you know the top performing govt schools north of the river. Consistently good schools though are Rossmoyne, Willeton (SOR), Churchlands and Shenton College - Western suburbs, Mt Lawley and Duncrig were about the same and better performing than Carine, Woodvale also OK. Have done so much reading up on schools over there I really am confused. I've been looking at belridge secondary college or Warwick Senior high school?? Scot01 Posted January 7, 2017 Report Share Posted January 7, 2017 Govt schools in Top 50 schools for this year - Shenton College (10) Western suburbs, Willeton (14) SOR, Rossmoyne (15) SOR, Applecross (24) SOR, Churchlands (28) NOR, John Curtin (34) Fremantle, Carine (40) NOR, Woodvale (45) NOR, Mt Lawley (48). Warwick and Belridge - if your child wants to go to Uni then neither school are very good, you need to study 'ATAR' subjects to go to Uni and both schools have more of an emphasis on vocational courses. We had the same thoughts when we came accross and we had a list of government secondary schools that we wanted to live in the catchment area of - our personal list was - Shenton College (naturally), Churchlands, Carine, Duncraig and Woodvale. We found that rentals in Shenton College and Churchland areas were very expensive if you wanted a 4x2 with a pool. We managed to find a rental in Sorrento which is a very nice suburb and catchment area of Duncraig - we have been very pleased with them upto now. Burns beach is a very nice area! You could consider going private (much cheaper than UK private schooling), if thats where you wanted to live. It is very hard and always difficult to know where your children will settle. When we are ready to buy it is unlikely we will be buying in Sorrento due to the prices of the area, so will be going further out, but will still be travelling from where we buy in the future to keep him at the same school. ali Posted January 15, 2017 Report Share Posted January 15, 2017 I do think it's important to get a feel for a school, whilst academic achievement is wonderful, some children can feel pressured. My two (as I've said many times), are chalk and cheese and each had very different needs - my daughter is academic and my son (whilst doing ATAR subjects) is more sporty. My son goes back to year 12 at Leeming Senior High which my daughter also attended. They have an academic extension programme, science academy and specialist Japanese programmes. Our daughter had got into a good Grammar in the UK so we felt like we owed it to her to get her into a top performing school. But when looking around our local area we were sold on the smaller, more personable Leeming. It was the right decision, our daughter is flying there and is so happy. Willetton and Rossmoyne SHS both have very good reputations, but they seem much too big in some ways. Leeming SHS and the included Ed Support Unit there, have always been a better option in my view.
