Opportunities at School

I've again been struck what my children have done at school here in Aus. As part of normal lessons, my son has played golf, been cycling, swimming in the ocean, obtained his skippers ticket (to drive a boat) and did his driving theory.

I was just thinking this with my sons new school. They teach them how to ride a quad bike, operate a chainsaw (Still not sure on that), muster cattle, do a coffee course etc.

There are some interesting courses/lessons aren't there. My offspring are now in their 30's, but in their high school years they had similar experiences. I was very pleased about the driving lesson theory and the visit by the RACWA who held the lessons, as it reinforced what the driving school and I was trying to enforce. But the one that I remember most, was by my daughter in Health Studies. The school purchased some battery/computer automated dolls that behaved like babies, and every student in the class, whether male or female, had to bring said "baby" home for a weekend and have the total responsibility to look after it with no intervention from their parents, siblings, friends etc. The internal computer of "baby" was set to cry, pee, etc etc at very frequent times through the day and night, and whilst it drove me totally mad and brought back the nightmare of sleep deprivation of my offspring's early years, it was the most amazing lesson to the my kids about being responsible for another life. So much so that they are now 31 and 33 and I am still not a Grandma!!! I think it has put them off having kids totally!

:arghh:
