SpecialK
Hi, We are emigrating soon and looking to find out if anyone has taken excess baggage on their flights and if so did you use any services to assist with bags at the airport? We will have our 2 kids and car seats as well as cases. We would like to take excess baggage but just not sure what our options are here. Thanks Karen
SpecialK
Ok so figured out the excess baggage options just need to see what services there are to help with bags at Edinburgh and Perth airports. Anyone know about such a thing at either of these airports?Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
ali
Not heard of assistance with baggage - doesn't mean it doesn't exist - you may need to contact the airports. Excess baggage - read up on each airline and what they allow - Singapore will allow additional baggage but you have to have an unvalidated PR visa to have the excess. ETA - you probably already know that UK and Aus standards for car seats are different - but thought i'd mention it.
SteveJ
dont forget to check the car seats too as australian rules are different to UK, the seats usually have to have a tether on the back in Oz.
SpecialK
Thanks. I will check out the car seats to see the requirements as completely forgot about that. Hopefully at least one our two seats can be used if not will be one less thing to transport and one more thing to buy when we arrive! Rossmoyne
We came with a lot of excess baggage thanks to the generosity of Singapore Airlines as we had an unvalidated PR visa. 3 of us had in excess of 150 kg between us which equated to 7 cases, plus hand luggage. Mind you that was 26 years ago, so not sure what their stance is these days. We arrived into Perth at 3am because of delays in Heathrow with a baggage handlers strike (ironic!). Both of my children (aged 5 and 8) were sick as they had developed colds during the flight, but I was overwhelmed with the amount of help I had to collect our luggage and to wheel it out to the arrivals hall. We must have looked like celebrities arriving with so many bags on three trolleys, topped with 2 kids laying across everything and two very helpful airport staff wheeling the two trolleys I couldn't deal with! So thankful that Dad and Bro had brought two vehicles to collect us!
SpecialK
That's a great story Rossmoyne. I think Singapore Airlines still may do that but our visa is validated already and we wanted to fly from our local airport. So we have booked with Etihad and have added on a couple of extra bags on top of our allowance and may add more. Just having a look at concierge services which will assist at the airport but looks like these do exists so that's good. Doesnt look like we will be taking our car seats now tho so another thing to arrange when we get there. Thanks again for the heads up on that one! Probably wise not to bring the car seats as the regs here differ to UK. http://www.kidsafewa.com.au/child-car-restraints-road This is the link the kidsafe website that gives you all the details. It would be interesting to others on the forum to know how you get on, so please keep up posted.
PerthAtHeart
A word of advice from our recent experience. It will be prudent NOT to do anything that would result in giving Customs a reason to inspect ALL your bags, such as declaring you have restricted food or medicines, or even excess currency. We did that for the latter and had to lug 10+ bags onto the Xray conveyor belt even though we showed them all our currency. Leave all contrabands at home so you can answer coolly, "Nothing to declare"!
