Child with Additional Learning Needs (ALN)

Hi everyone,

Thank you in advance for taking the time to read this and share any advice or experiences you might have!

My family is considering relocating to Perth for a couple of years. My husband would be on a 428 visa. However, we’re aware that our 13 year old daughter’s Additional Learning Needs (ALN) could pose a challenge with the health requirement. I’ve read mixed experiences about this—some families have been granted visas in similar circumstances, while others have been denied. It seems to depend a lot on the individual case.

Our daughter has development delays and ADHD. She doesn’t require medical support or additional resources beyond attending a specialist school, but we understand that securing a place in a Special Needs school or centre in Perth would be essential if our visa is approved. We’re also aware this would involve fees.

One of our main reasons for considering the move is to improve her educational experience. From my research, it seems that specialist schools in Perth focus heavily on therapeutic play and outdoor activities as part of their learning approach, which we think could be fantastic for her.

If anyone has experience navigating this process—whether it’s about the visa application, finding a place in a Special Needs school, or adjusting to life in Perth with a child with ALN—I’d be so grateful to hear your insights.

Thanks again for your help!
