Guest Ali_M
Greetings to all Perth Poms! My husband, 2 young sons and I are considering emigrating to Perth later in the year, probably end of August. I've done lots of research, and it all looks amazing! However, one thing that's been mentioned to me a couple of times, and I've read as well, is the annoying strong winds and flies that apparently plague Perth in the summer months? Is this really a big issue for residents? We'd like to live in a beach side suburb where apparently the fly problem is less, but you've then got to cope with strong winds blowing sand all over the place!?! Really grateful for your views/ experiences on this, as peopole are siting these as as issues that would stop you moving to Perth! Thanks everyone, Ali x
Bibbs
Perth is something like the 3rd windiest city in the world (after Auckland, and Chicago) and the flies only really live near water. If they were such a big issue, no-one would live there. Then add in peoples fear of snakes, spiders, sun and the fact people will miss marmite and Eastenders .. Some people always find an excuse not to do something. The wind usually picks up through the day, so get out early and you'll have no issues. During the summer you'll be thankful of the wind as the days it doesn't come it you'll bake.
Guest donki
personally i don't find the flies an issue they are only annoying for 6 weeks then it gets too hot for them and the dung beetles do their job... the wind isnt an issue either as already mentioned its a relief alot of the time I have lived in Auckland for 6 years the flies and mosquitoes are bad there to. Guest DelboyBrummie
I have been here for 3 months now and the flies are no worse than the UK in the summer and as previously stated the wind is a welcome relief when it hits 40 degrees. People always have something to moan about everywhere in the world so take no notice. Perth is a genuinely beautiful city with many great plus points, there are some down sides too but they are minor irritations. The hard thing about the move is missing people and the flies and wind is not really an issue that would or should be a consideration when deciding to move. The wildlife is far scarier than anything else.....
Guest guest1
I totally agree with all of the above....the flies are pretty annoying, but so are wasps on a warm summers day in blighty!!! The easterlys are what blow the dust from the desert at night and the Freo doctor blows mid afternoon and is an absolute godsend when its been 40 degrees....life is totally different this side of the world....so expect the unexpected....the critters are big and dangerous and dont die very easily.....but I guess if you ask me whether I would rather meet a deadly snake in my back yard or a group of hoodies hanging out at the local Morrisons car park on a dark winters night, I know which one I would choose....come with an open mind and I think you will be fine....you will miss the UK and it will feel like you have gone through a bereavement.....thats cause you have just said goodbye to your life you once knew, and are saying hello to a new life....do your research before you get here!!!:goofy:
verystormy
I will just add the question of do you have a visa already? PR visas can take two years to obtain at present. Do you know if your occupations are on the list?
