Hi Guys :-)

Due to arrive in Perth in two weeks time and really need some advice on good Drs in the Rockingham/Cooloongup area. We'll be living there at least 6 months and I need to get a GP straight away!!

Also, we've sorted full cover medical insurance through hubby's job but just wondering if anyone knows how medical insurance works in Oz? Do we pay and then claim the money back or will the Dr send the bill directly to the Insurance company....

Thanks in advance!!!

There are a group of drs in a medical centre, called Grange Medical centre, besides or adjacent to the Shopping centre at the corner of Ennis avenue, and Grange drive . there is also a large pharmacy which is open from 8am to possibly 9pm 7 days a week. I`m not sure whether the dentist is there too, as its a few years (21 years) since I lived in that area. there used to be a paediatrician there too. They have a pathologist in attendance as well if I remember.

the shopping centre has an IGA,(independant grocer, rather like Coles` food) a cake shop, The Nag`s Head Tavern for meals and drinks,

and I think a wok shop lol I drive through it sometimes from off the Ennis Avenue but it shows you how much attention I take of what it consists of!

Woodbridge medical Centre is in Woodbridge drive,(which is the street opposite that leads to the Rockingham-Kwinana Hospital) next to the hospital there are around 25 medical practitioners who use that centre, but you do not have to use one in the suburb you live in, you have the choice of picking out a centre, and hoping that they are taking new patients. We also have an *out of hours clinic*,staffed by medical staff at the hospital, for those patients who do not have a Dr picked out, if that can help you?

You will need to get a medicare card as soon as you get here. When you go to the doctors they will take your medicare card and that pays for about the first $33 of the cost of an appointment. The rest will vary from practice to practice. My doctor chages about $54. The difference between the medicare bit and the rest can not be claimed on insurance.

If you dont have your Australian bank cards when you go then you will have to pay the full amount in cash and take the receipt to a Medicare centre - there is one in most shopping centres and claim it back. Its not too bad. Only takes about 10 mins and they give the $33 back in cash. If you have a Aus bank card then you pay the $54 and then Medicare will put $33 back into your account immidiatly.
