Give me a break!
Forgot about this site to be honest :embarrassed: and reading through its full of good information. We have been here 7 months now and we really love it. I am very pleased to say that all of the scare stories that scared me when I were in the UK have proved to be unfounded and the posters that post them really ought to have their legs slapped:wink: We are currently settled in Secret Harbour a beautiful suburb about and hours drive south of Perth, we have just secured a plot of land a bit further south in Meadow Springs and will be building our new 4x2 shortly. All of the suburbs we have been to have been lovely, we spend most of our time in Mandurah, its lovely there, the feel is lovely and so much to do. Im not a great fan of Rockingham but I know a lot of people who are and there is nothing wrong with it I suppose I just like other places more. My OH had a job before moving out here and there are plenty of job opportunities. The food isnt so expensive you cant afford to live and we have not found anywhere selling an $11 pint of beer. Yes the beer is dearer but the wine is cheaper, so swings and roundabouts. Things like parking at train stations and hospitals are free, the train on weekends and school holidays is $9 for the whole family and will take you from Mandurah through Perth and up to the northern suburbs and it covers you for bus and ferry journeys on the same day too! How cheap is that? I was told that going to see the Doc was a costly experience well. I phoned at 11am and was told to come down at 3pm the SAME day, got down there early and was out before 3pm and the cost well $58 but I instantly got $46 back from Medicare! $12 to be in and out do waiting, well I would have gladly paid that in the UK for that service! We love it here and we are so glad we came and made up our own minds, there are a lot of whinging poms out there but our experiences have been all positive and I wouldnt hesitate in recommending this life to anyone:cool:

Guest guest1
Its not all doom and gloom....but paradise comes at a cost.....Not sure where you get cheap wine from....I think the Australian wine is cheaper in the UK than it is here in its own country....Everyone has different opinions and experiences of things...one thing is for sure....you will miss dear ole blighty....at some stage, I never thought I would, but I am and we live in a beautiful city with beautiful weather....but we pay a high price for that in terms of high cost of living. I dont think anyone on this site sets out to paint a black picture of australia especially when its so exciting and wonderful to get the green light to come here....I guess you have to give it your best shot, embrace certain aspects of australian life, but dont loose your identity or nationality in the process, we are expats and want to make australia our new home but that doesnt mean we have to farewell all things british....or forget where we came from...after all we have lived most of our lives there and only just started to live our life here, it will be hard yakka but probably worth it in the end!!! Guest The Rustys
Fab post - thanks - very much appreciated We are hoping to be out in October and whilst we are all excited, I have a few niggles!! Mainly about the kids and school. We have a 15 year old daughter (16 in July) currently in year 11, looking at all the information we will have to try and get her in the end of Year 10 to meet friends etc to then start Year 11 in Jan 2012. She is very keen on going to Uni so I think this is the best option - any advice would be most gratefully received. How did your 16 year go? We also have a 4 year old (5 in August) in reception year at school - also from all the information I think he will have to wait to start Pre Primary in Jan 2012, not sure I could put him back in Kindie until the end of the year - that feels really mean when he thinks he is all grown up going to school.... I am concerned I will have trouble getting him in to Pre primary, can anyone advise? Many thanks:wacko:

Guest scottishkiwi
Hi Catherine, thank you so much for such a positive, upbeat post. It was just what I needed as I have to say I was getting quite depressed reading about all the poms who are headin back home (on another forum)- OH keeps telling me not to read them but I can't hep myself. I want to know as much as possible about WA (Perth) before we get there in June with my hubby and two daughters, 11 and 19. I was also excited too hear that you are building in Mandurah. That is one of the places we like the look of (only from the net, of course). I've also go my wee girl sorted with a Catholic school in Mandurah, so we will certainly be driving distance to that! We are coming from NZ, so we will have a different perspective from those coming straight from Britain (I left Scotland 16 years ago). I haven't any family in NZ so that won't be any different for me in OZ. I have made amazing friends who are like family, but I'm sure we'll make just as lovely friends there. Can you advise me of any areas in Mandurah to avoid (we will be renting)? Thanks again
