Guest Hayley
Hi everyone, Just wondered whether I could have a bit of advice, we have submitted our 176 application to diac lodged on 04/03, I am now waiting for WA to confirm ss with them from looking through different forums its seems that diac are allocating co fairly quickly then if everything is ok granting the visas around 3 months after that! I am getting stressed thinking of all the things that I have left to do once we get our visas, can anyone help with the following: > The best (& cheapest) removal companies to go with (we dont really have any furniture as we sold it all when we sold our house, we just have our tv's, about 5 big boxes of personal items, the kids toys & a couple of display cabinets that we have flat packed. > I have 2 children age, 8 & 5, what do I do about getting them into schools, do I wait till we arrive? We plan on living north of perth, butler, clarkson areas. We was thinking about getting a furnished apartment to initially go to for the first couple of weeks as I thought it might be easier to sort a longer term rental property when we are over there, is this what people tend to do? We are also going to hire a car for a couple of weeks too as this should give us time to look for a car to buy (we want a 4 wheel drive). > Does anyone know whether you are allowed extra luggage allowance when emigrating? I dont know what i'm going to do with most of our clothes, do people put some of them on the boat with the other stuff? I would really appreciate some advice, i'm a nivice to all this emigrating lark!! its very scary especially taking 2 young children. Thanks Hayley:skeptical:
Admin
Hi Hayley Singapore Airlines & Qantas allow an extra 20kg baggage allowance per person if you're emigrating - ie booking one way and have the relevant visa. I'd defiantly say furnished rental is the way to go, but you're not allowing yourself much time if you're only thinking of 2 weeks. I'd advise 3-4 weeks. It can take some time to find a longer term unfurnished rental - some times the viewings are only once a week, you might find that viewings clash with other properties you're interested in and vacancy rates aren't that low, so there'll probably be a reasonable amount of interest at any properties you view. Probably best to leave schools till you're here. Some have catchment areas anyway, so won't entertain you till you've moved into the area. Removals will probably just be a case of getting quotes for a shared container from several different removals companies such as *********, Crown, PSS, John Masons etc
deanhewitt
Hi Hayley I have just had a quote for £6,175 to move our belongings and we didnt think we had that much as eveything is fitted in our home. The removal companies work off a price per cubic sq ft. Ours was 1,300 which was to much for a small container which only holds 1,100 cubic sq feet. You will also need to insure your goods with can be up to another 3% of the quotation. Good luck Regards, Dean & Margaret Ann

Guest outnumbered
I would get about 3 quotes for removals as they can differ by quite a bit. Also, you can haggle with them. We chose the company who initially gave us the most expensive quote but managed to get them to match one of the cheaper companies price. Agree about the schools. They seem to have strict catchment areas and we were asked for proof of our address for my son to start at the local primary school. If you are in the catchment, the state schools have to give you a place. Hope this helps a bit and good luck
Guest Dayna
Also if cost is an issue, you can get the container delivered and pack it your self. On our way out to Oz we had the removal company do it for us, it cost about 5K, when we came back we just got them to drop the container on the drive, packed it ourself and the shipping company picked it up the next day, cost about 1K....Bit of a difference hey! lol. Just be aware that everything has to be spotless, golf trolleys, clubs, shoes, bikes, scooters etc need to be washed with disinfectant. We flew with Maylasian airlines who did give extra luggage allowance, we packed enough clothes for a long holiday and some toys for the kids, then put all the rest of the clothes in the container. Also golf clubs travel for free. We did rent a furnished property for a month and that worked well. Once you get to Oz and decide where you want to live, the school in the suburb you live in is obliged to offer your child a place so you might want to consider that when choosing where to live. GOOD LUCK!!!
