Hi all, have only recenly come back to posting on Perth Poms ... been busy on our big sister site of PIO.

I'm Alison (Ali) and I moved here in 2007 with my Hubby Nigel and Children (boy and girl who are now 16 and 11 respectively).

I'm a clinical nurse specialist in community mental health in Armadale, and hubby is a broadcasting engineer and works all over covering an area from Dunsborough to Yanchep. We live in Leeming.

We were lucky that we made the move before the changes to citizenship came out and have been Australian Citizens now for 2 years.

Hi Ali,

I'm completely new to Perth Poms and will be moving out to Perth at the end of June/beginning of July with my husband and 2 children (8 & 12), from Malta. We have had 2 wonderful years here (originally from the UK) and now are looking forward to an exciting start in Australia. Can you or anyone reading this tell me if - You have to pay for government schools? I was told this was probable but cannot find any information about it? What would be a good base area to get the lie of the land? (Avoiding Perth if possible.) Any areas to avoid living in ?(You know, areas with grumpy old people, high unemployment, noisey nightclub etc.) Thanks, Selina

Hi selina im in a similar situation myself and will be moving out to perth in october with my wife and three young daughters i believe if it is a state school you may have fees of $200-300 per year to cover price of books and excursions etc.Private schools i believe can be quite pricey though.

Hope this helps a wee bit.

Hi, you won't have to pay massive fees in state schools, you pay for books, binders etc., there's usually a voluntary contribution towards the school etc. plus incursions/excursions My son is in year 6 and his fees were:

School contribution $60, books etc., $134 (you'll find that some years you re-use binders etc), Excursions for the year $90 Dance $20, Swimming $55, Mathletics $10, Band $95, Guitar lessons $100 per term

I'd say have an idea where you have jobs then work out where you want to live - for me I didn't want to have a massive commute, I'd already been offered a job in Armadale and wanted to live within half an hour of that.

Well from Armadale,

going south Wungong, Martin, Seville Grove, Byford, Mundijong. If North Maddington, Canningvale - nice houses which resemble lots of the older Federation (early 1900`s)type home.Gosnells, Kenwick.

Forrestdale to the west, if you want to be semi-rural, hope this helps!

I live in Leeming - worked in Armadale for 4 years - only takes me 25 mins to get to work

Thanks Johnboy, your reply has put my mind at ease. I can only guess you are as excited as I am. How have your kids taken to the idea of moving to Australia? My Son wanted to leave straight after school on the Friday that we told him. My daughter however, (8 years old), cried on and off for a couple of days. We are not allowed to refer to Australia, we have to use code words for it. One good thing is that since she is so young, she'll make friends quickly. Thanks again for the reply and congratulations on your impending move, Selina

Thanks Ali, fees are not as bad as I thought, certainly a lot cheaper than what we pay at the moment. Great to erad that there is so much on offer for the kids after school. My son (12) is very active and loves to be on the go so I'm sure he'll rack up the fees a bit.

No job to come to as we have a Business Owners Visa so we will need to get our skates on and look for a business to buy or set one up. It's all so confusing finding a mice area for the kids. I have read things about Rockingham being very violent and then I read it's the best place on earth to live. I wonder if it's just a case of picking 3 areas and then getting out there and looking around? CONFUSED!!!!!

RobynMargarat, you certainly have given lots to research. My husband is flying back from the UK tomorrow and has just phoned me to say he has bought me a map of Australia so I can get a better perspective of where is where. Will look these up and look on the internet for more info. Many thanks for your input, Selina.

How polite you are! Have had a chance to look at these sites and have now got myself in a bit of a pickle. The ETI site states that we may have to pay for schooling and not just books etc because of our visa type (Business Owners Provisional). Have sent a email to Aus gov and waiting for reply. My head feels like it's about to split in 2! Confused? You bet!!!! With researching schools, districts to live in, a temporary place to live (that's affordable) and trying to renew my UK drivers licence from Malta, it's a bit of a nightmare. I think the main issue is that I'm techno-shy so using the internet takes me ages as I seem to spend hours going around in circles. I feel one of two things happening tonight, either a semi breakdown or a large glass of port (I'm not much of a drinker so I may have to go for the first option, especially with the school run tomorrow). How does everyone else manage this process? Is it just me, or is it incredibly difficult? Thanks again for taking the time to reply, bless you, Selina.

Hi all! Time for me to introduce myself - good idea Ali!

My other half and I are both West Australians by birth, but we have a number of two-bedroom completely furnished apartments which we rent out. For more info there's a link in my signature :) We've been renting out our properties for about four years now and have found over that time that we get a lot of people who have come over from the UK (and also Ireland).

We don't have kids so can't help much with discussions about schools, but we're both happy to talk about other stuff we might have local knowledge about.

It's fantastic to see all the new members, especially given the relatively large amount of people who are PIO members! Welcome to the recent additions to the PerthPoms family :cute:

Regards

Jen

Howdy peeps,

I'm also a convert from PIO (well, not really a convert as I still use PIO too) - I go by the same username over there, so no doubt some of you are bored by my stories of SS and Visa applications...

I'm married (waves at Hushpuppy who's lurking here somewhere) and we have a 3 year old boy who seems absolutely fine with moving to Oz. We've been telling him about it for quite a while now, and explained he will only be able to speak to his family via the computer, but he doesn't seem bothered at all.

Oh, we also had to tell him that all the 'Red Black spiders' have moved to Malaysia.....he was terrified of them. And no, I haven't mentioned the Hunstman yet - he can find out about that on his own I think.....

Anyway, I hope to see some of you in Perth for a nice cold beer on the beach, if WA ever manage to send the 1100 form to DIAC!

Hi i'm terri:smile:..have been on PIO for a few years off and on, and was directed here from a post on PIO, so thought as my love and home is particularly Perth, i would look in. I was a £10 Pom back in the 60's as a toddler and grew up there into my teen years with my three brothers, who all live in Perth..have pingponged since then, most recently (last 12 years) with my hubbie and children. We now have a little Aus of our own, who was born after a huge gap of 14 years!!!..look forward to taking part in PP and hearing about wonderful Perth, plus possibly giving advice and help now and then:notworthy:...

terri:wink:
