Hi all,

Looking to get some information on being vegetarian in Perth. Is it easy to get veggie ingredients in the supermarket (Quorn products etc)?

Do most restaurants have veggie options? Or is it like Paris where they look at you with a mixture of pity and anger, before bringing you a salad leaf topped with ham?

In my experience - the meat option is steak and chips - the vegie option is chips.

I went to uni with a lot of vegie's - and shared a house with two of them - and was part vegie myself. They didn't eat out much, as they were fantastic cooks. I love vegie food when it's cooked by someone who knows what they are doing.

And fruit and vegies do cost lots at the moment. Best to eat in season - or even get a bit of land and grow your own.

There is a fantastic India (Jane) restaurant in Perth - it was near St Georges Terrace - can't remember the name - not even sure if it's still there - but it was to die for. They only took money by donation. You paid what you thought it was worth.

You can get nut meat and stuff like that - and I had heard that Quorn had was launching over there.

Do you eat fish? The fish is good.

hi in my experience veggie food is great from supermarkets ,there was no quorn products last year but lovely marinated tofu great for bbq,s the fruit and veggies are expensive but worth it they are much tastier . The only time i felt left out was when the rest of the family were having fast food from mcdonalds they have nothing except fries and icecream. i spent most of my time north of perth if you are going to be in the city there will be loads of choice. Coles or woolworths supermarket also sell minced tvp, veggie sausages and some cheeses that are ok hope this is helpful cheers ade

There better be a decent Indian, what with all the poms in Perth these days!

I eat some fish, I guess I'll have to discover what that Aussies eat. Shellfish is out for me (seriously, how can you look at a muscle, shrimp or oyster and think 'yum' is beyond me)

Indians aren't as popular as the UK. There used to be a good one in Freo, and a decent one in Perth, but it's been awhile. Thai and Chinese are much more common. But things may have changed since I lived there.

There are quite a few fish restaurants around. But I'm not sure of any pure vegie restaurants.

You are lucky !!!! They have just started to stock quorn products In coles and woolworths, don't expect to eat out at many places though !!! Best options are Indian and chinese places !!! Been here 2 years and they sure do not cater to veggie's !!!! Good luck.

Wow , if you go north of the river i won't speak to you again lol!

Is Perth like London then - the river is a bit of a 'seperating' thing?

I have to live NOR - it's in my blood I'm afraid.

Yes - you tend to live one side or the other - but I don't think one is better than the other - they both have their exclusive suburbs, and they both have less exclusive suburbs. But you get better beaches in the north IMHO.

I've generally lived NOR - except for a brief period when I lived in Fremantle. Although I went to uni at Murdoch - which is very SOR.

Bugger - lucky I'm a good cook then I guess..... :-)

Eating out is basically pizza, salad, and an omelet if your lucky, ive been vego for the last 25 years, 14 of that in OZ, but since i started eating fish and seafood four years back ive never had it so good, by the way mussels in white wine....mmmmmm or garlic and chilli.....OH MY LORDY. Its a good job you can cook cos youll not be eating out at hogs breath, the black stump, barbeque barn, Macca's, nearly every pub in the country (unless its salad of course) and the Kentuky fried bloke!

Good luck with the quorn, by the way http://www.locationlowdown.com.au/search/results/SA/Quorn

Pizza and salad I can deal with.

And fish is fine, as long as it's cod, sea bass, haddock, salmon etc - no idea what fish is popular in Oz.

Shellfish / seafood is out - eeewwwww
