How did you start the ball rolling for the move here , what did you look into first ie agents , websites , holiday here first .. whats the first step ?

We had family here and just thought why not ? started looking at pictures then we emailed an agent and did an online points/ skills application to see where we stood .. its a big choice and hard to know where to begin for some ..

Hubby's job was on the line so started looking on internet for a new one. You what that's like, kept having jobs pop up for Perth. We laughed at first when we looked, but the more we looked the more it didn't seem such a bad idea. 6 months later we took on an agent and are now in the process of booking medicals and police checks.

Visited my brother in Brisbane, no intention of migrating. Got home and hubby said -"I could live in Aus" and that was it, applied to ANMC for skills assessment, filled out the 136 application 2 months later, and 7 months after that we were the proud owners of a PR visa

Hush spent a few months in Oz about 10 years ago, and was adamant she wanted to move there.

So it took us a while, but eventually we decided to give it a try - rather live with mistakes then regrets and all that.

Went to see an agent (wished we hadn't, the little thieving toe-rags), but now we're doing it ourselves.

We came out for a family wedding 10 or so years ago. Loved it. Did the usual post-holiday "we should move there" thing which nothing usually comes of.

For a few years we were into our careers and it just wasn't the right time. A couple of years ago the UK economic downturn impacted us and we were going to have to move and/or find new jobs anyway. So we did the 176 visa application and (eventually after 2 years waiting for grant) got here.

So out of interest how are you finding dealing with the application yourselves ? is it easy enough to do, was it the right choice for you ?

So far, so good. After wasting a huge amount of money on an agent (who basically did nothing), I managed to get through Skills Assessment, IELTS and State Sponsorship on my own.

VIsa is now lodged, (waiting for a CO), meds are booked for June - other then the Form 80 (if I need one), I can't see what an agent could have done that I didn't manage myself.

Hi Jackboots

We registered with Seek.com.au with the jobs we were looking for. After emailing a few companies that we had identified that didnt have jobs advertised about 6 companies got back to me. I have narrowed this down to 3 companies now and we fly out to Perth next a Sunday for 3 weeks to have interviews and look for suburbs to live in.

We will be lucky enough to get 457 sponsored visas for myself and my partner.

The first question we had to answer was where in Australia as we have no connections there whatsoever. We decided on Perth because of the billions of dollars being invested there by the mining industries who are alos investing in new infrastructure which has a knock on affect with employment.

I work as a senior manager in the recruitment industry and from what I have been told by my potential employers is that there is a shortage of workforce for most trades.

If we do decide to make the move I am sure I will be on here looking for people who want work.

Tomorrow will be an interesting day as I believe it is budget day.

One thing that I learnt is that the way that recruiters write cv's in the UK are totally different to what employers look for in Oz.

If we move we are going to rent our house out in the UK for the remainder of the mortgage and if after a couple of years in Perth we decide that it is the place for us we will sell the house in the UK and be able to buy a house in Perth outright.

I have collated a spreadsheet with costs etc for moving and living costs from information I have gathered at the moment and when we are there we will be looking at the costs more closely.

If you would like a copy of the things we have identified then please email me with your email address and I will gladly send this across.

With regards to removals we have been quoted £4,600 + AQIS £400 and Insurance at £450. This is for a 20ft container.

Regards,

Dean & Margaret Ann

It had never occured to me to live in Australia. My Ex Husband had emigrated to Brisbane about 4 years previously and my daughter at 15 had decided to follow, and I really did miss her.

Anyway, my Husbands company were relocating from Bristol to a place in the USA on the borders of Canada. They needed a person with my Husbands skills and offered him a place there and offered to pay all our relocation costs. We thought about it for about 20 seconds and then said yes:jiggy:Well it all started going through, they gave us a relocation agent who did everything, and then about 2 months before the move the Global Financial Meltdown happened and the company pulled out :arghh:

We were gutted and deflated and above all we by then had itchy feet. So we looked at our options, America, Canada, New Zealand or Australia. A no brainer really as my daughter was already here. We picked up the phone to Go Matilda and here we are:notworthy:

thank you for those who have had an imput on this thread, sometimes when your thinking off making the big move it can be bewildering at best , so as a quick look its handy for people to read where others started .. i know some of these websites were a really big help for us at the time we were starting out .
