Probably like London, if you live in the centre you can get around fairly easily, further out you really need a car I would say. Perhaps it also depends on your type of lifestyle. I've come from Sheffield and lived there for periods both with and without a car quite happily, but I can't see being able to live here without one.

Buses/trains are run by http://www.transperth.wa.gov.au/ - have a look at routes/timetables for an idea.

And if doing a budget for a car, count on secondhand car prices being 2 or 3 times what they are in the UK. This caught us out big time.

I think the thing that gets you here is the distance between places and I'd think that after a while you'll find that you need a car to do most things. Our friends live in the same suburb but the distance between our houses means that 9 times out of 10 we'll take the car, other friends live in other suburbs 20 mins away so again a car is essential for visiting. I think having a car give you freedom of choice e.g. My hairdressers is in a different suburb (and so have to drive), my 25 min journey to work would take me about 1 hour 30 mins by public transport.

great to know thanks, yeah hotphil we were looking at second hand cars and can't believe the prices of them, you wouldn't get a third of what they're asking here for them. Mostly look like bangers!

Well coming from Ireland, the public transport here isn't so great so maybe we can make do for a little while at least. Just used to it with the baby really, and shopping but hopefully we'll be near a beach mainly ;)

I think depending on where you live there would be no way you would manage without a car. Like Ali said its the distance between everything, because everything is set out with more space the distances are more. Added to that the heat, whereas you may have been happy to walk large distances in Ireland here the heats gets you and I know many a fit person struggles to walk distances in the heat. I managed without a car for about 6 weeks but it was a huge struggle, we bought a car in the first week but the OH needed it for work. We spent $4000 on something we would not have spent £400 on in the UK but we will be able to sell or part exchange it for about the same so it is swings and roundabouts. Good luck:wubclub:

thanks givemeabreak good to know, yeah that's the price we were looking at too for buying one, just can't believe how bad they look, hopefully they won't fall apart in a week! Is there an equivalent of the NCT (Ireland) not sure what it's called in Uk but something in Oz which tests the safety of cars before you buy??
