Guest guest1228
Now that Winter is nearly upon us how are we all planning to while away those wet and windy few months? (though wasnt very wet or windy last year!) Any ideas for wintery days out? Xmas in July anyone? I like to visit Kings Park for a blow away the cobwebs walk in Winter also Lesmurdie falls or Bells rapids is good in the winter months. Walks on the beach all wrapped up have a certain appeal too....its Winter but not as we know it, lol. Much easier to do long walks than in the hot summer months. I like the Perth winter I just dont like the very wet days, though we do need the rain don't we? As a Pom though the rain tends to make me depressed after the first 2 or 3 days unlike the Aussies who love it!
Guest LaneyOOO
Love Kings Park, when ever I have that I hate Perth/Australia feeling (I do sometimes I admit it) I go there and it sorts me out, I love the drive down the Freeway to the City. I prefer the beaches in the cooler months, love to look at beaches/coastlines not one to get in them really. Just a drive in the hills is nice Winter or Summer, the misty hills are gorgeous in the winter. You will have to come SOR of the river Fiona lots to see !!! I Love South Perth also I think it is nice to look at the city from there and getting the Ferry across is great for the kids. A nice drink somewhere with a nice log fire. A Bonus for us this year, in our new house we have Gas Ducted heating through the whole house how cool is that, won't know what to do with ourselves. Guest guest1228
Gas ducted heating!!! get you, you'll be toasty! I meant to tell you actually, have driven down to Maddington the past 2 days with work and thought of you, not far from where you live? The scenery is something else, totally different from NOR. I love the hills, what a lovely place to live. South Perth is fab, nice playground when you get off the ferry. I love the views from there. We must do lots more SOR exploring this winter I think
Guest LaneyOOO
Maddington is not far from me at all, well I live on the low side of those hills, different it is and alot older compared to NOR. I spent from the ages of 18 to 23 up NOR not living there, had friends there and spent most of our weekend at The Breakwater, what a different place it is now very flash lol. My BF and I used to drive up to Whitfords LOL to do our shopping just for a drive. Ocean Reef was only being built at that time, my how it has grown now upto Butler and beyond. If you want to know anything about Sor and where to go just ask away xxx Elaine x
Guest sue1203
Hi all Can I ask, we are moving over to Perth in July from Ireland and obviously this will be there Winter..what sort of clothes should we be bringing for their Winter??? Many thanks Sue x
newjez
Slight change of tack, but I've never understood why they don't use double glazing in Perth. It would keep the houses warmer in Winter and Cooler in Summer. Plus it would cut down noise and is more secure. But when I asked an estate agent about it - he just laughed and said buy a bigger air con. But with prices rising for utility bills - it seems to make sense. Does anyone have it in Perth? Hi Newjez, yeah I wondered that also, I was a little why there is no double glazing, I just makes sense to me, and does it not make it safer also?? Sorry to stray a little ladies, just enjoyed reading your lovely stories about winter in Perth, something to look forward to
ali
We've had thicker window panes installed so we're hoping it helps retain the heat. My Sundays are spent watching my son play soccer Sue, if it doesn't rain then temperatures are pretty pleasant during the day (you may find them warm), but for us it will feel cooler. Bring some woolies and an umberella - when it rains it pours, and night time and mornings are pretty chilly.
Give me a break!
Well we arrived on July 1st last year so our last winter was spent down on the beach in our shorts and tshirts enjoying the lovely warm weather and looking at the "morons" walking on the beach in jumpers and Uggs wondering what the heck was wrong with them:wacko: This year I will be one of those "morons" as I have already got my jumpers and thick dressing gown out:biglaugh:just need to buy the boots as I left all mine in the charity shop in England:wacko: We dont have any heating in this house at all so I think we are going to have to splash out on some heaters, its already chilly in the mornings. Guest The Spanns
I'm trying to imagine how cold it might be in Winter. Which month in UK would you compare it with? Thinking of moving to Perth for the sunny, warm weather and all this talk of cold and Ugg boots is making me panic!!! Could anyone give a quick summary of weather for a year in Perth. Looked on climate sites but would like the real picture from someone who's experienced it. Thanks.
Guest guest1228
I would compare the coldest driest days in Perth to a good late April day in England, when the sun is shining which is quite often even in Winter you can still get sunburnt and it feels very pleasant at 18 or so degrees. If it rains the temp tends to be lower around 16 and add wind to that and it feels like say a rainy October day in England. Now night times are a different matter altogether, it can be 19 in the day dropping to 7 or 8 at night and that 8 degrees actually feels a helluva lot colder in your poorly insulated average Perth home. Some nights in July/August can get even colder and last year we had several nights of 2 and 3 degrees, it felt bloomin freezing and full on bedsocks/pjs and jumpers are needed inside the house.....but next morning by 11ish you're back in tee shirts! Mad. The hottest summer days are like nothing you could experience in the UK. Too hot at over 35 for most people to do much outdoors other than swim in ocean or pool. Once you get to 5ish though it cools down and the temperature feels fantastic, like a balmy holiday evening in the med for instance. Overall I think the climate is fantastic in Perth and Spring and Autumn are pretty much perfect.

If we have a rainy winter it will be 15 degs in the day and a few degrees cooler atnite , when there are clear days the temp gets to early 20s but down to single figures at night last years dry winter had the record for the most nights under 10 degs . You just get used to it

In answer to your comments Newjez we looked into double glazing for several reasons a) to keep the noise out b) to keep the heat and cold out c) to keep the creepy crawlies out......but the cost is unbelievable...just to do the front of our house (which is a double storey) was in the region of 27,000 dollars.....I kid you not.....it is very very expensive....dont know why...I think they ship in the units from Germany or somewhere so that has something to do with the cost....would love double glazing but sadly cant afford it and wouldnt really see the benefit of spending that much on what is 'windows' at the end of the day....thats the reality though.! You can get secondary double glazing (like we had in the 80's in the UK) and that isnt too expensive...but its not quite the same, so I am afraid it will be air con for you and a rather large bank balance to pay for it!"

I guess it needs the volume to get the price down - if everyone was doing it - it would be a lot cheaper. One thing I've never seen anyone do in Aus is wear hats or gloves. People tend to make fun of you if you do. It's kind of hard on people like me who are follicly challenged.
