Hi All...

When looking for long-term accomodation in perth, where would you suggest i NOT look at.

I'm talking known trouble spots etc.

I'm not in a fantasy world where i think everywhere in perth will be brilliant, and at the same time i don't want this to be a shouty argumentative thread.

Coming from Glasgow, i know where the good and not so good areas are, and having lived in London, edinburgh, manchester et all, i know that every city has it good areas and bad areas.

So, to save a lot of headache, where do you good folk who are out there reccommend i NOT look at when thinking about long term rental?

You're from Glasgow? The whole of Perth is paradise in comparisson!

Only joking - I'd actually like to know this. I asked on another thread but no-one answered me.

Maybe depends what you want/dislike. I've heard Armadale can be a bit rough (but haven't been myself). Northbridge is handy for the CBD and has a vibrant nightscene, and hence with it, a bit of trouble. Balga where I am at the moment has a high percentage of on-benefits residents and a relatively high crime rate (but I've not had trouble yet, but moving in two weeks).

Most agents here ask if you've been to drive past a property before they'll make an appointment for you to see it. That's good advice as if you get a bad feeling for the area it saves everyone time.

A couple of the areas near the airport have the kind of semi-industrial feel you'll find near any airport. And watch for the flighpaths if you dislike aircraft noise.

Areas close to the beach or CBD tend to be a bit more expensive as you'd expect.

perthsuburbs.com.au can give you some figures for each area, but I guess it may well be a case of having a look around for what suits you. We've taken the attitude that with a 6 month lease we'll get time to see if where we're moving suits us (Victoria Park), but also if we dislike it, the time will fly and we can move somewhere else.

Cheers Hotphil.

I was thinking about getting an apartment close to CBD, as thats where my work will be, and its gonna take time for me to ship my car over so id save on transport costs. But some friends who've been over started putting the heebie jeebies in me by saying theres areas around town you wanna stay clear off, (but conveniently they couldn't remember the area).

Its me and my mrs, and shes quite a timid wee thing, so i'm more thinking about her being able to go out and about on her own while i'm at work, without fear of wether she's gonna get mugged or not.

To start our new life, we've booked a place quite a distance away, in clarkson. Reckon its close enough to the beach, and the train stations not that far either. That way we can ride into the CBD, and get a feel for the suburbs aswell.

You'll find somewhere I'm sure. The attitude we took was that it wouldn't be an adventure without the risk of perhaps living in the "wrong" place for a bit. Having moved to the other side of the world, moving a couple of miles if it doesn't work out will be nothing.

Its funny but people say different places .. yet others live there with no problems at all .. we looked at areas and we had family or co workers say oooh you don't want to live there :wideeyed: midland is one id say i would rather not live in and some of the surrounding subburbs , but there are good parts and bad parts in quite a few area's .. id say get your short term and see for yourselves once your here .

Good advice by Jackboots. I was about to name a few suburbs but there really are good and bad in all, just some are a bit more 'polished'.

I had a work friend who moved into a flat in Shirley in Southampton UK. They delivered one car load of stuff, then went back for a second. By the time they got back with the second car load they had been burgled!

You'll find it hard to get that in Perth. Possibly around Lockridge used to have a bad rep, parts of Balga. But even the worst would stuggle to get anywhere need some of the dives in the UK.

Clarkson is a nice suburb but once again some streets look a bit rough, the newer park is nice tho, some lovely parks and one good thing you will be one of the first people on the train so guaranteed a seat on the way in

HI Har00n

If you are going to be working in the CBD like myself we found it easier travelling in by train plus to park your car in the city is about $20 per day. We are looking Ocean Reef, Joondalup, Mullaloo area etc in the North and the train takes 20 minutes in to the city in a morning and it is free parking from Joondalup train station.

By the way we live in Ayrshire and my partner is from Glasgow.

I'd suggest you ask people what is nice rather that what is bad; most people do not like to rubbish their neighbors....

I have been in Perth for 31y, when we first arrived we used to leave the car windows down when shopping and the house unlocked. We don't do that any longer, but nobody in Perth had bars on their windows.

Having said that, you can judge the suburb by the rental price asked.

I'd suggest you rent away from the CBD, but close to a train station or bus that takes you to the train. That way you avoid driving in peek-hour and travel in comfort, perhaps reading that great book you always wanted to read...

In a couple of months I will have a brand new, fully furnished home in Spearwood, close to shopping centre, school, bus and the Marina, for rent to the right family. I will be looking at minimum 6m leases.

I am not fishing for rentals, just mentioning in case I can help someone; I actually expect to have to reject many families.

Please get in touch if I can help.

Keep smiling
