Ok, so you're a new arrival in Perth.

What top 5 things would you recommend the new arrival must go and do / see?

Let's keep it to fun activities, none of this "queue up at Medicare office / get Tax Number" rubbish.

What are the Perth sights and activities that make Perth, Perth?

Where have you been that has simply taken your breath away and you would have no reservations recommending it to others.

It would be great if you could also provide the approximate cost (if applicable), or fitness level required (if applicable).

Good post!

Cant tell you costs but we plan to take our 3 girls to Perth Zoo & the Aquarium at the Hillarys in the first couple weeks. The Zoo had this huge croc when we visited 3 years ago & our littluns can't wait to see it. (Hope its not dead!)

1 )Perth just walking around shopping and have lunch , driving through the orchards in spring ( the blossom colours are stunning ) 2) Mandurah .. dolphin tour if not just sit on the foreshore and have a picnic .. 3) Lunch at one of the Winery's and a drive out that way .. 4) Whitman park if you have kids in warm weather ( splash pool , tram , Playgrounds barbie ) ,4 and a half ) caversham park while your there ( see all the Roo's ..koalas etc kids love it .. and so did I ) 5) aqwa better saved for wet and cold windy days lol .. 6 ) Adventure land ... 7) keep your eyes on the paper for festivals and country shows and rodeo's .. 8) head to the beach with a bucket and spade !! ( and a sun tent and heskie ) 9 ) head to the markets in freo and have fish and chips at the front .. even better when the festivals are on .. 10) Find one of the national parks or Dams go for a picnic etc ... lots of fun stuff if you look for it and as cheap or as expensive as you want to make it .. get that heskie filled with picnics and beer or wine lol ...or a cuppa in a flask or juice ..away you go xx

Great post... we are visiting in August for 5 nights and really want to sell it to the kids. They are 10 and soon to be 7. We will be mainly in Perth the Thursday, Friday and Tuesday and Joondulup area's for the weekend.

Our weekend is sorted but we want to throw a few cool things to do for the kids in between dragging them around employment agencies.

Any more suggestions??

King`s Park, on a Sunday, especially the days during spring they have the guides. showing you all the wild flowers, in as close as their natural bush/habitat.

Cohuna Wildlife park out near Armadale has emu`s koala`s etc. there is also a small Zoo down near Ravenswood, or Pinjarra. But sometimes on a Sunday there are concerts at Ravenswood near the river, there is a small cafe, can`t remember its name, but I have watched and listened to an Irish Band playing one Sunday in March.

Lake Leschenaultia, out in John Forrest National Park, not a salt water park, small fish have been introduced into it to keep down the mosquitoes.

Mundaring Weir, up Greenmount hill, the largest and also an engineering feat, pumping water from Perth to Kalgoorlie, invented by CY O`Connor during the early days of Perth,. All our Water supply dams are done up as tourist sites.

Canning dam is also a city supply .

Wellington Dam, down near Collie, supplies a lot of the great southern towns & farming areas with scheme water

There is a hands on teaching facility down here in the Rockingham area, near Lake Richmond, run by conservationist, volunteers, people might like to go do see some of the natural environmental specimens.

Penquin Island Tours, and Dolphin watch, sometimes you get the dolphins splashing around anyway, so ask when you go to book the PI tour, you might get them for free.(the dolphins I mean)

Pinnacles, (petrified trees, salt encrusted) north of Perth.

There used to be Koala`s at Yanchep National Inn & park, but I have`nt been there for years.

Wave rock out near hyden, over 450klms, is also a monolith, (giant granite rock) and has the local water supply on the top of it. You need height to make water pressure for a town supply, so they generally use the monoliths`s.

For those that like Monolith`s there is one in WA Larger than Uluru (Ayer`s Rock in Northern Territory) ours is called MT Augustus, out in the hinterland from Geraldton.

I know a bit about the water supplies of WA as I used to work for the W A Water Supplies, country branches.

We also used to have a small private railway tour, called Hotham Valley Tours, but I haven`t heard it mentioned for afew years. But look around on the WAtourist bureau site there are problably other places none of us locals use as we are not tourists..

I would go with the list from sunnywa too apart from Jimmy Deans at Scarborough which I think is dire, it's cheap for a reason but I guess food choices are personal. I would choose Clancys at City Beach or Blue Duck at Cottesloe but you won't pay $10 there. I would also add the tram trip around Perth which departs Kings Park. Well worth the money.
