Hi everyone!

Just a quick question for all you iPhone users!

I currently have an iPhone4 with Vodafone UK.

I'd like to buy a 'prepaid' sim from Vodafone Aus and simply pop the new sim in and go!

Last time I was in perth i just had a regular phone with regular simcard and just popped the prepaid aussie sim card from Vodafone - simples.

I envisage problems this time as the iPhone has a 'microsim'. Hmmm

Anyone tried to do the same thing?

Thanks a million

Easy! I did this at Perth Airport last time I was over - there's a Vodafone shop close to the exit of the international terminal, they sold me a pre-paid micro-SIM card and set it up for me right away! Perhaps you might want to call them ? They are on +61 8 9477 1600(Just one thing - I have no idea if your iPhone is SIM-locked to the Vodafone UK network - mine isn't)

Hey angie, sorry for hijacking your thread but does anyone know if 3 works in oz? Also if it doesnt will the Iphone work ok unlocked?

Do you mean the UK network "3"? If so, then this might help?

Roaming Partners

Hutchison 3G UK Ltd (3) has declared active roaming agreements with the following network operators:

Singtel Optus Limited (YES OPTUS)GSM 900/1800 - Live

Telstra Corporation Limited (Telstra MobileNet) 3G 850 - Live

Vodafone Pacific Limited (Hutchison 3G Australia Pty) 3G 2100 - Live

Vodafone Pacific Limited (Vodafone) 3G 2100 - Live

Vodafone Pacific Limited (vodafone) GSM 900/1800 - Live

I got this from the website here: http://maps.mobileworldlive.com/

Some thoughts that may help:

If you're leaving a UK contract-paid phone, ask the operator to convert it to pay as you go before you leave (you'll retain the number for however long). Once in Oz, get a new SIM asap. Make sure it's active before giving anyone the number off the pack (I got through (I think) 5 SIMs and 3 networks before one of them would take money from me/activate a SIM). Once you have a working Oz number, whack your UK SIM back in a phone and use it to change your voicemail greeting to something like "This is Phil. My new Oz number is 0xxx xxxxxxx - please call me on that". Then you can put that SIM somewhere safe and know that anyone calling your UK number will be able to get hold of you for as long as your UK provider keeps that number active (usually several months). Make sure you know how to change your voicemail greeting before leaving the UK if you plan to do that!

Don't forget to make sure you know where your Contacts are stored - if they're on your SIM, best have a list of them somewhere else too. If they're in iTunes or Google Contacts or some other computer-based thing and you synchronise them to your phone, you may find that spending time now converting how they're stored to full international format will be useful e.g. +44 1628 4xxxxx - they'll still work at the appropriate call rate for any time left in the UK and also allow you to dial them once in Oz too.

If wanting to let people know you've arrived safely, there are free to use internet PC's in the Arrivals bit of Perth airport - great for a quick Facebook/email or whatever the hip online thing is this week.

Good advice Phil!

The Vodafone guys at the airport even checked my existing SIM card first, and would have transferred any numbers that were stored there onto the new card.

And yes, my first experience of roaming in Ox was NOT good - not only a serious case of "bill-shock" when I got back home, but also, the frustration of finding out that my particlualr telco here had no agreement with Yes Optus, which meant that I could send a text to a Yes Optus phone alright, but when they replied, their text was never delievred back to my phone. On my second trip, when I got the Vodafone pre=pay card, I bought a 1-month $50 package, and that was more than enough for my needs. Although the remaining credit expires after 30 days, the number remians live for 6 months, so all I have to do is buy more credit on my next trip, next month.

And about free interent terminals - also available in Singapore airport - very useful, even if they log you out after 15 mins!

Hope this helps

Ian

Has anyone bought prepaid sim cards for australia from UK before they travel? Have found a few but was not sure how good they would be. The other thing I found was Go-sim that give you an international sim card - has anyone had any experience with these?

Sorry, no. I did look at some of the SIM cards available from here, but really couldn't make much sense of the options - and there was an even smaller choice when it came to finding a micro-SIM with a data plan to fit in my iPhone! The Vodafone one from the airport did me just fine (excepot coverage wasn't too great when I went off to Margaret River for the weekend). I'll top it up again when I next arrive in Perth, and at least that will buy me time to make a final decision.

Good luck! Ian

I now have TWO iPhones! The one provided by work is on Telstra, while my own is on Vodafone. I've been using them both a lot around the Perth area, and typically Telstra will find a decent signal in places Vodafone gives up. And even where there are good signals for both, the Telstra network appears to be faster than Vodafone. Not done any scientific testing though!

Telstra's also the only one you'll get a signal on when significantly out the city. As the national carrier I think they probably had some kind of commitment to provide coverage. That said, I've found their customer service at all levels to be the worst of any telco anywhere. Vodafone got slated a while back for having network issues and are currently spending vast sums on upgrades and tbh, I've had no issue with them so far.
