Can anyone help me out, My 2 YO Golden Retreiver is coming with us to Perth, she has 1 month hard time to do in Byford before we can have her back, Its winter here in the Uk, she has just moved into her lovely thick winter coat in preparation for playing in the snow like she did last year, only this time she's going to get a big surprise when she gets unloaded in Perth in the middle of Summer, question is should we help her out by getting her a grade 1 before she leaves, or will nature takes its course and she will shed it all in a day or two, cant have my poor baby suffering in the heat.

Guest half a dozen

Hiya, we moved to Perth in November 08 and our 18 month old golden retriever followed 2 months later (as Perth quarantine was full) in the January 09. He flew on Australia Day and we visited him the next day. He looked like a mountain dog with his winter coat! It was middle of summer here and boiling hot, unlike you I hadn't thought of having him clipped before he came. The quarantine station had a dog groomer coming in the next day to cut 2 german shepherds and they rung me to ask if I wanted him cut, I did and when I went to see him the day after he was like a puppy! I have kept him clipped all year round now and he's much better off. So I would defo recommend you have him cut before he comes. By the way, the staff at Byford are lovely and you can visit and walk him, which if you can, I would recommend as it's not guaranteed he'll be walked if you dont. I didn't go everyday due to distance and time but I did go a few times a week (you can only visit Monday to Friday) and it was great. It's not ideal I know but coming from the UK we're lucky it's only a month, the poor South Africans have to quarantine theirs for 6 months. You will soon forget that first month when he is enjoying the parks and beaches of Perth, it's so worth it and as I said the girls at Byford are so lovely. Good luck (sorry to ramble on!) x
