derham
I wouldn't mind butting in on this thread, I am desperate to find out what the import duty would be on a car worth say $35,000. It seems if the import duty isn't too hefty it would be worthwhile shipping our car as the costs aren't that great but I canot get any info on the tax side of things? Guest Doozclump
Try this link on Poms in OZ http://www.pomsinoz.com/forum/transport-shipping/97053-transporting-your-car-oz-everything-you-need-know.html It has all information regarding shipping cars, we are taking our 2 cars in the bottom half of a container and using the top half for household items. Hope this helps cheers
derham
Thanks Doozclump, hope you dont think am being cheeky but how much is it costing you to ship 2 cars and household goods as this is what we are considering?
Guest Doozclump
We are at the quote stage just now, we are being specific and want the cars loaded at our house so we dont have to drive them hundreds of miles to the south then have to get home (Scotland also). Looks like it will be about £6000 to £6500. I think that not to bad considering the dog is going to cost about £3000, cheer
derham
Thanks, That ties in with what we have allowed. We will also be taking our dog, can't believe how much the costs are to ship the dog and then we have quarantine costs but if we dont take the dog the kids will disown me. I am paying about 8k inc insurance for a 40ft high cube with the car in it and then a stage built over to take more light furniture, hope you have all applied for your permits, it takes ages and they will only mail it to an Aus address, packers are arriving Tuesday, container is arriving Friday, pooch Feaves friday , if you are taking 2 cars, make sure one is your name and one is in wifeys name, I slipped up and ended up selling other car and bikes coz wifeys car was in my name, you can only take one and it has to have been registered in your name for at least 12 months leading up to the import date. derham
How long did the permit process take, I am not moving until the middle of next year at the earliest.
Druid
How long did the permit process take, I am not moving until the middle of next year at the earliest. I mailed the application from the UK 26 September, It got issued 6 Nov, do you have your visa?, can you make the 100 points test? if so then apply, there is no expiry on the permit and if you do have problems you have time to sort it out
derham
No I dont have my visa yet, hopefully early next year but we will not be moving until after the kids are finished with school so we should have about 4 - 5 months tom play with. Thanks
Guest Doozclump
Our car applications going in this week, both cars are in different names and have been with us for more than 12 months. We have lived in Australia before so have our TFN, medicare and a westpac bank account also having friends living in perth we can use their address. Its more complicated sending cars, furniture and dogs than it is getting a visa, cheers

derham
Thanks for all the info, we haven't decided to ship one or two cars. it will depend on what we can afford by the time we've paid for all the visas, flights, furniture, dog, paid off finance and deposit for ahouse we might not have much left (if I knew how much the whole process would have costed at the outset we might not have started!!!). I know how you feel, I swapped my car for a 40FT Hicube container, I swapped one motorbike to ship the dog, the other to buy airtickets for us lot, expensive business the changing country, on top of that the house didnt sell, so we skint
gchapman1965
Hi my 2007 X5 goes tomorrow with a landing date of 31st Dec, the shipping cost me £1250. My wife's car goes with our furniture on the 17th December a BMW 320i cabriolet. Both these cars are worth significantly more in Oz than they are in the UK and is definitely worth sending them despite all the taxes. We used Ironchef and he has made everything quite easy for a small cost including arranging shipping plus he arranges everything at the Oz end. For a stress free move I would recommend him every time. kristian@ironchefimports.com good luck
derham
We've got 2 BMW as well but I dont think we will be able to ship both (owe too much on finance) unless we get over the odds on house sale (if we can get it sold?) and somehow I cant see that happening. Do you know how much your taxes will be yet?
