Fionn
Hi Derham, My family and I are considering moving to Secret Harbour too. We have a 14 year old girl and an 11 year old boy. Did you ever find out any up-to-date information on Comet Bay College? Thx.
derham
Sorry I never got any response, my kids are 14 and 11 as well although both are boys. I have plenty of time to find out more, if all goes to plan we will not be moving until July as my oldest sits his O grades next year (his school is doing accelerated learning). Have you heard anything about Comet Bay and the secret harbour area?
Fionn
We've heard and read mixed reports really. We were over in August and met a girl who had studied there without any problems. She said she thought it was a good school and was working in one of the local estate agents. I'm in touch with a lady who lives in Secret Harbour and she absolutely loves living there. She has heard mixed reports about Comet Bay College, but has a friend who has a boy at the school and he is doing really well and they are very happy with it. I've heard also that they have a gifted and talented programme. If I hear anything else, I'll be sure to let you know!
Give me a break!
Hi we live in Secret Harbour for the moment, we are building in Lakelands so hopefully on the move in the new year. Comet Bay College does have a mixed reputation, but coming from the families that send their children there, it is a good school and their children are happy. The negative comments tend to come from people who havent sent their children there if that makes sense? There is a new head teacher there and from what I can gather he has turned things around and is doing a grand job. The gifted and talented programme is a good one, but a very small percentage to manage to get into it. I myself will be sending my son to a private school closer to where I will be living if I can get him in that is. Check out the my school website and it gives you the results of the Naplan ( Aussie version of SATS) Good luck to you all.
Guest lynne1266
Hi All, I moved to Secret Harbour 4 weeks ago and my children started at Comet Bay Primary & Comet Bay College 3 weeks ago. My son is 13 and was very nervous about starting as he had problems with bullying at his UK school.....he absolutely loves it !!!! He comes home every day saying how he understands everything so much more that he did in the UK (so they must be teaching him well) and he even said that the wee goes so quickly cos he loves the school !! Hope this helps Lynne x

Fionn
Hi Lynne, I've posted on my other thread too...so here's a copy! Thanks so much for your information....it's a big relief to hear something that's up-to-date. How are you enjoying Secret Harbour? We were over in August and it looks amazing...very family orientated, but it would be good to get some feedback on that too if you don't mind sparing some more time. Thx so much for your help! fionn x

Thx so much for your help! fionn x SORRY FOR THE LONG POST !!! Hi Fionn, We arrived in Perth 14th Sept, not knowing anything about Perth Suberbs ! We were due to go to Melbourne but at the last minute my OH employer asked if we would like to go to Perth instead.....I'm so glad we said yes !!! We were given 4 wks accomodation in Applecross not far from CBD, we spent the whole 4 wks looking at various suberbs. Secret Harbour was one of the first that we came accross, but we decided to check out as many as we could (both sides of the river). We saw some really lovely houses in lovely suberbs but we always ended up back in Secret Harbour !! We love it here, people are really friendly, 2 min drive to the beach....and the weather is GREAT...even in the low temps, our UK summer temps...lol My OH found out that an old school friend was also moving to Perth but he was heading to north of the river, he visited us on his 2 day in OZ and changed his mind and they have now moved along the road from us ! My OH works in Booragoon fairly close to CBD and it takes him about 40mins which is not too bad and the trains takes about 30mins to Perth...so ive been told, not tried it myself yet ! As I said my son loves Comet Bay College, he had some real problems in the UK which made hime very nervous obout starting and also he didn't really seam to be learning anything back in the UK but Comet Bay College he is actually understanding things and he loves going to school...well after the initial grumpy teenager wake up in the morning lol !! If anyone has any questions I will try and answer them and help in anyway I can...I know how stressfull it is Lynne xx
Fionn
Hi Lynne, Thank you sooooooo much for all your help! It's so great to hear all your views. My hubby and I were in perth in August, trying to get an idea of where we wanted to live when we arrived there. We found Secret Harbour on the day we were leaving (Our flight was at 10pm), so we really only had time to look at 'Woolies' and the beach! We really loved it though!....and yes, the people were just lovely! Thanks for the offer to ask more questions....I think I'll probably be taking you up on that offer in the not too distant future!! Give me a break!
Lynne you must try the train, its brill. On weekends and school holidays its just $9.00 for a family ticket and you can travel where you want and it inludes all the buses and ferries too. Just watch out for the view as you cross Mount Henry Bridge,17 months on and it still takes my breath away
Guest Pathfinder
Just wanted to find out if there are any more recommendations for Comet Bay College?? This is a school I am looking at and would be interested to know if anyone can give an update? Still not decided on whether we are definitely coming to Perth yet as Oh has given me orders to do research before he starts to make decisions. Secret harbour looks more affordable to live in than some of the suburbs nearer the city, it also looks a family friendly area near the beach which would definitely be a plus. Does anyone know the aprox costings per term? Really would appreciate your input!!!!
gobbyjock
Comet Bay is a state school so any fees due would be just general contributions (e.g my daughters state school fees this year (Yr12) are about $300 - can`t remember exact amount) - then you have to pay for text books (which was another $300 this year for us)and uniform on top. State school contribution fees cover stuff like use school bus, photocopying, printing and all depend on what courses they take. Having said that there are some visa`s where they have full fee paying status such as certain temporary or bridging visa`s. My mate sends her kid to private school and she laughed when I moaned about the cost of the texts books - hers cost $700 and then she has private school fees on top plus uniform. Guest catoyne
Hi, I know this thread is quite old now but we are hopefully moving to WA in March 2013 and have been looking at secret harbour. My children will be 3 & 5 so a little way off the high school yet but are looking at the primary. I just wondered if any of you can tell me what secret harbour is like for families / children, is it far to the nearest town or activities like cinema, shops, and things to do etc. And of cause any more info on the schools, primary and secondry would be great. Thanks
Michelle J
Not wanting to put a downer on things but sure you will appreciate some negative feedback too as I would have done the same! My 13 year old son has had mild bullying issues at Comet Bay but a member of staff there was incredibly supportive and helped him through the worst of it, that seems to have calmed down now. However he comes home from school most days saying he has not learnt anything which for Matt to say that is pretty serious. He is not the most academic kind and I think the average kids seems to get a bit left behind, schooling is very different here to the UK, I came over here very naively thinking because we don't have the language barrier it would be just the same and it isn't - there is something to be said for the UK education system! We are currently looking at other possibilities for him including fee paying schools. Every child is different though so your experience may be totally different. Sal
The stats for Comet Bay aren't very good and Safety Bay High school does better. It's not a very academic school and not many kids end up doing stage 3 courses which is what you need for Uni admission.
Guest catoyne
Thanks for the feedback, that must be quite hard when your settling in to a new place, it is so hard to try and decide on schools when we are not there yet. Thanks for the info .
Guest sheila
If you are planning on sending your children to Comet Bay College then I would recommend staying in UK or wherever else you may be relocating from. I have lived in Australia for 19 yrs from UK and spent 8 yrs in Secret Harbour. We settled in Secret Harbour when the area was very new, quiet and peaceful. Last few years have seen a lot of undesirable type people move into the area. Lots of English families now mixing with not the best quality Aussie families leaves you with a fairly undesirable bunch!! Hence, the local High School is a well known disgrace. The students that I have known in Comet Bay have graduated with NOTHING, no ambitions, no desire to achieve anything, no qualifications and basically no chance of gaining rewarding employment without extreme help. In my 19 years in OZ, I have witnessed children develop from babies into adults, there is not one I could mention has done anything 'good' with themselves. Thats what will happen to most kids growing up in Secret Harbour or surrounding areas of Port Kennedy, Warnbro and Rockingham. As for adults living in Secret Harbour... too many mixed backgrounds from England, Scotland etc has formed one big f*@ked up atmosphere like a sad version of Coronation street gone awfully wrong. As most people would know, Mancs, Geordies, Brummies, Cockneys, Scousers and whatever else do not usually mix well back in there homeland, yet you could find yourself at a BBQ pretending to like these people just to make friends in your new false life. If you move to Australia, try befriending some Australians?? Much easier to feel like you have actually gone somewhere! Sorry for the blunt, brutally honest assessment... but thats the truth. And as they say 'sometimes the truth hurts' Good luck in you migrations

gobbyjock
Funny old thing but I know quite a few people in the area who have done very well for themselves - got degrees, became doctors, nurses, lawyers and teachers or learnt a trade, become police officers or joined the armed forces. I know others who work in Coles or Woolies too - they also seem happy enough. As for mixing with Australians many of us do on a daily basis, many of us also have Australian friends!! Now this is where you confuse me (though I`m sure that won`t suprise you as I`m Scottish and apparently we types don`t mix well with other Coronation Street types), on the one hand you slag people off for befriending Australians and on the other you slag people off for not befriending Australians - so perhaps you can clarify that. Now Im not saying it`s all perfect - but I think a lot of your comments were rather vitriolic. You will meet people and mix with people at BBQ`s, you will meet fake people who will pick you up and look at you, working out if you are worth knowing (it can feel like you`re in the bargain bin at Coles - one of those tins with dents that get picked up, scrutinised and chucked back in) but for all of those you will meet some genuine friends - but it takes time. You don`t get friendship in a can, it is not instant, you do not become lifelong friends overnight - it takes time and effort. I have a small circle of really genuine friends and a large circle of aquantances - but I`m smart enough to know the difference between the two. Secret Harbour is not my cup of tea but a lot of people are very happy living there, for me your post whilst making some good points totally loses credibility because of the sweeping generalisations you make.
