jamesw
Snakes...been here 3 years and only seen one and that was on the golf course Spiders, yes there are a few but they will leave you alone. Cockroaches, its a warm place, so there are roaches, you can buy spray that will kill off all pests.
jellytots
I just moved to Perth a couple of weeks ago and I was also in a panic about the spider situation...but it really wasn't nearly as bad as I'd though. I've seen 2 spiders since I've been here....but just small ones which are easy enough to hoover up (to be honest I did get my oh to do this but I could have done it if I'd tried!!) The bug killing industry is massive over here so I suggest when you get here have a trip to one of the supermarkets and get yourself armed with some of the sprays etc and then you will be able to cope with any type of bug that Perth has to offer. If you do find you have an issue with bugs in your new home then you can get some spray that creates a barrier around your house to stop the annoying things getting in...don't know much about it but it's often advertised over here. Good Luck with the move and just shout if you need any more info.
Guest pat and mike
if you live in teh suburbs snakes aren't likely to be an issue. most spiders are harmless. it's the redbacks and white tips that can make you ill....but usually you have to invade their territory, so they defend. they don't come looking for you ! can't think i've ever seen a white tip, but we have plenty of redbacks in the garden (they're outdoor spiders generally) you start to recognise thier web, so you know where to spray. i don't tend to bother spraying the "safe" spiders as they do more good catching mossies and flies....which i find to be a bigger problem . the huntsman spider is scary but harmless. don't fret
Guest Clarebear
Hey Carole, Have been here 5 weeks and seen plenty of spiders! I too am not good with bugs of any kind (or so I thought) the funny thing is that as you expect to see them it's ok when you do. I was quite excited to see the 5 red backs I found under the patio chairs at the rental we were at!!! Could not believe it I just did a precautionary check and there they were with eggs too, so we got the hose hose out and blasted the beggars! You will be fine, to be honest you will have so many other concerns, a home, jobs, schools etc that the critters just become part of everyday life xxxxxxx Hi all, I am moving to Perth in January and not looking forward to seeing spiders etc. ( Terrified to be honest )!!How many have you came across since living in Perth?? Carole Hi Carole As others have said, the spider situation isn't nearly as bad as you fear. You will see a few in your first few weeks cos you'll be looking for them, but you'll soon become oblivious (nearly) to them. I don't like them, or any bugs, in my house. If they are in there, they are fair game to be sprayed, sooked up the hoover or battered with a flip-flop Apart from that, if you leave them alone, they're not going to come looking for you. As for snakes, i've not seen any live ones in WA yet, and the area's they inhabit such as the sand dunes etc are well sign posted - i just hope the snakes can read, and stick to they areas lol Jackie

Carole We have a harmless spider living in a tree in the garden, he's about the size of a 50 pence piece (without legs) he comes out every night makes a huge web, scares the crap out of me when I go in the garden with the dog at night, come morning he packs his web up and goes to bed, I took a photo and googled him, he's harmless, so as long as he leaves me and the dog alone, I leave him alone

portlaunay
I read somewhere (which means it could of course be entirely apocryphal), that there are more deaths and injuries in WA caused by camels and roos than snakes or spiders. Driving at dawn or dusk is especially hazardous and a friend had two emu's run alongside him when he was on his bike. He thought it was pretty cool to ride at their pace but without warning one of them just launched itself into his path. He swerved, hit the other one and ended up with a broken collar bone and a written off bike. Those massive roo bars on the front of trucks are there for a reason and it aint the Redbacks. (Though it would be pretty cool if Redbacks grew that big!)
Druid
We have dave a spider who lives quietly in the corner of the utility room. Forgot to mention, leave the daddy long legs alone, they are your best friend, they eat the redbacks !

Andyrob
Been here 8 months. Have seen loads of snakes, but I worked in a rural area for a while. Never seen any in Perth. Loads of spiders too. Get lots of harmless ones in the house, but had it sprayed outside yesterday so that should help. Have quite a few redbacks in the garden, but tend to leave them be unless they make the webs right next to the doors or windows. I've had one spider but so far - don't know what it was as it but me in bed one night, but it wasnt a redback. Was some swelling and itching, and was gone in a week. Like everyone else, you think it's going to be killer snakes and spiders everywhere, but the reality is that the spiders won't kill you, and the snakes don't seem to come into the suburbs. Buy some insect killer when you get here, and you will be fine.
Guest kazzy65
Gone goose pimply just thinking about them. The Huntsman is huge!! Terrify me and my girl, they are HARMLESS but HUGE unfortunately. I've seen a fair few redbacks, learnt to recognise their web pattern so know to look out for them when I see them. Never seen a white even though I do have quite large gardens with lots of shrubs which is where they tend to reside. Seen one snake....dead in the road. But we live just outside the city so not many snakes to be seen around here. Biggest problem I've had with creepy crawlies and flying things is pantry moths. I just buy the spray and spray the house exterior every three months. Good stuff. Keeps things at bay.
