Us too!! We are Stevie and Sas Hubbard. We've three kids Dale who's 14 jake who's 4 and wee Abigail is 1. We're going to Albany but will be in Perth for 6 weeks when we first arrive. We thought we were gong to Balcatta but now its Albany. I'm leaving behind my older daughters who are 22 and 20. Oh its all a bit quick eh xx

Hi

Crikey ! How did you end up with Albany as an alternative to Balcatta ? Albany is good 5.5-6hr drive from Perth.

Three weeks ago we went to Albany for 3 days for a mini-holiday. It was a 5-hour drive from Baldivis, which is 42km south of Perth.

Lovely part of the world. Much greener than Perth and cooler. Can see why it is a popular tourist spot.

Check out a family-friendly English-style pub in a lovely converted heritage house on a residential street called the Earl of Spencer, not far from the foreshore. It serves English ales/grub and has a good children's menu eg fish fingers made from real fish not frozen. Very friendly, helpful staff. It has a website.

We stayed at the Dock Rock Motel - so called because a large boulder resembling a dog's face is opposite - near the town centre. Motel looks very 1970s from the outside but the rooms are fine. The restaurant next door, Lime 303, serves good food in a swish setting. Bit of a surprise.

A tour of the old whaling station at gorgeous Frenchman Creek was fantastic. A real eye opener about the gruesome aspects of whaling. Nearby Denmark - which is a quaint country town - has a wonderful beach and the Tree Top Walk at Walpole is great.

Sound like a tourism rep from WA:biglaugh:

Hi Donki what depot does your o/h work from, whats his speciality??I gonna be based in Jandakot myself, had looked at Balividis but thought it might be a bit too far but 20 mins seems quite reasonable. Would you have any ideas on rental prices??

Hi

We live in Baldivis. It takes my husband 35 minutes to drive to Osborne Park in Perth but he doesn't leave until 2pm. In the rush hour it could be up to an hour, depending on where in Perth you need to get to. The train from Warnbro takes 40 minutes into the CBD. The station has park and ride.

We rent a big brand new 4x2 in Tuart Ridge, for $450 a week - rises to $460 from March. We've reluctantly had to agree to the price rise as it would cost us more to move to another rental while our new house is being built.

We only signed with a builder last week after months of looking at dozens of display homes, getting detailed quotes from 6 builders - all falling over themselves for our business - and looking at blocks all over Perth/metro area. It will be 11 months before we can move in.

The rent includes lawns mowed and reverse cycle air con which was a godsend when the mercury hit 38,39, 40 and 42C last week and very useful to warm up the house in winter when temp fell to 7C. Aussie houses are not designed to withstand the cold as poorly insulated.

The rent is at the high end but much cheaper than Perth. A house like this in Perth would be $600-$700 a week and even more in the posh suburbs..

You can get decent rentals for $400-$425 in Baldivis. Have a look on www.reiwa.com.au for rentals in Baldivis, Perth and beyond and on www.realestate.com.au. REIWA stands for Real Estate Institute of Western Australia.

Hope this helps. Happy to answer any other questions.

PS Moved to WA from NSW in September last year.

Any feed back regarding med insurance from WP, how is it all going for u all now, looking forwad to it all ending and just getting there.

Alright Deano,

No word back fromm WP, just went with basic insurance myself. Man what a weekend! I thought the hard part was getting the job!! proving me & missus have been in defacto relationship for 13 years was nightmare!! had to scan in something like 127 documents, then had to prove dependency of 19 year old step daughter another 50 docs or so. All done now though. Sold car & Caravan, then Signed visa draft and they tell me it going in this week. Happy days!!

They tell me no meds required for visa, but did we get something from WP that wanted us to go for one at some point???

Just read the collective agreement again. It says employees 'required' to provide a full set of tools will get an allowance. I've found out that WP provide tools we need but some are quite basic. I've been advised to bring what I can especially insulated stuff.

Deano my visa has been lodged as well and I've heard nothing about having a medical, does this mean I don't need one ?

Deano, I'm starting on the 22nd after arriving on the 21st. I used the bank WP recommended on the email, WESTPAC. I called their London Office and spoke to someone called John as I couldn't access their website. He emailed me the forms and I sent them off that same day. I got all my account details from the Joondalup Branch emailed to me that night. I couldn't believe it was so quick. You can get your id verified by your local bank and send them verified copies and they will send your cards etc to you UK home address. It takes about two weeks so hopefully mine should arrive before I go.

Didn't cost anything to open the account. You can open it but have to put money in within 6 months which would happen when we start getting paid. I'm going to transfer some via HiFix about a week before I go just so I have a bit of money there at hand if I need it. They seemed very helpful at the London Branch.

Just had the man from the freight company around today listing all our stuff we are going to take. Very scarey listing all the stuff we want to take and what we are leaving behind. Is any one taking a car over ?
