verystormy
Hya Thanks for the information, I am happy to live a drive away from the beach and still be close to amenities etc., had a look at some of the new builds which look good but again it is deciding on price and area. I was kinda shocked to hear that double glazing was non existence, and heard for the dual air con can be expensive. There is so much to think about with everything, that you easily forget about the house types. SO thanks for all that info, it is nice to hear from someone who is actually experiencing it and can provide advice to us all. Must admit the whole process is pretty daunting, no wonder some people sort the rented accommodation out before they actually get there, but that will be difficult for us having never been before!!!! we are hoping to get a time-share for around 3/4 weeks when we get there so we can actually look at the house we have seen on the internet prior to going, but again as you said it will depend on how long they are willing to rent the property out for. I hope that once we get there things will fall into place with a bit of luck. Are you glad you made the move?? Happy to help. The dual air con isnt too much more and well worth putting in if you buy your own place. There are serviced appartments and short term places available in Perth for when you first arrive. We were lucky as my employer put us in a hotel. I would not even think about trying to rent a property before you get here. Most agents wont let you and from my expereince most looked nothing like what they did in the picture or you get there to realise its a crap area - Perth has its fair share of bad areas as well. Glad we made the move? Mmmm Hard one, we are actually contemplating going back to the UK and my wife is back in the UK at the moment looking around at possible areas we could live and getting a feel for if she could live there again. Its not that we dislike it, but for me, i work i Africa and it would be a much shorter commute and in Oz i pay 40% tax where in the UK i would be tax free. As for me i can take or leave Oz it comes down to the wife. It has its pluses and some days i love it. Then some days i hate it. Usually when i buy anything and know i am paying a huge amount of money or when i fancy a pint in a pub with friends. From my experience a lot of people who come here head back to the UK. There was about 8 people i knew who came out when we came out. There are three left now after 4 years and the others are planning to leave. Perth is a funny place. It is a very pretty city. You stand in Kings park on a warm day looking at the city over the river and you say to yourself that you could never imagine leaving. But, it is known by the locals as Dullsville and with some justifacation. The isolation is also a negative, people think Asia is on their door step, well Bali is (still a 4 hour flight) But most of Bali is a bit like going to Benidorm. Getting anywhere away for a break is expensive and even staying in Oz is expensive. Our last holiday was to Margaret River all in cost over $2k for 5 days. So, do miss the cheap easy trips to Europe. I think I would defo consider the dual air con as I really don't like when it is cold, and cannot get used to it even though I have lived in Scotland all my life lol!!! then when I get to OZ I will possibly moan about the heat Again I am being told that my hubby will possibly not get a job prior to going, but hopefully after hearing your situation there may be a chance of one!!!! I am looking forward to the adventure, I am sure there are going to be things I will not adjust to as quickly as I'd hoped (insects being the main one ) but am looking forward to giving it a go. Even though we have time-share we feel flying from Scotland is not the cheapest way and we have to travel further south to get a decent deal, and having children we always go during the summer hols so that always makes it more expensive, if we can afford to see the majority of OZ and NZ I will be happy with that. It would be ideal though if we could sneak a trip to Florida beforehand but trying to save all our pennies I am not sure that will happen I hope you keep us informed of your decision to either stay in OZ or head back to UK,
C&MFOY
Helenaoz2b, It seems a bit to fast!!! Hopefully things will work out ok. We don't really want to move without selling the house. Lesandkev
Hi, Have just found this site http://www.comparenewhomes.com.au/ thought I would put it in just in-case anyone is interested, I think personally I would like a new build and would be happy to rent in the area until it is ready, so thought this might help me narrow down my search (I Hope) I need as much help and advice as possibly Hey Had a look at some of these houses, they are stunning. Reading all the comments im kind of getting that there isnt much chance of getting a rental or job before we arrive, is that right? Guest Fyrish
HI We are going out in 3 weeks to validate and staying NOR. We have a short list of areas we are going to visit get a feel for the place and then see if we could actually afford to rent then buy in the area. Secondary schools are our priority and we were advised to find the right school first then try for rental. I know people who are still in Perth, others who have moved back to the UK and others moved to a different state. We want to give it a go as we have been told Perth is not for everyone but we could move states! Good luck researching and when you make the move

I know some situations where the OH goes out first but that is not for everyone, especially when there is so much to do back in the UK. We are the same with regard to the house, but these situations are dire - how long have you had the house up for sale?? Hope you get some useful news soon x

We are the same as yourselves with regard to the schooling, once we know roughly when we will be moving out there I will be contacting a few schools as it is very hard to get all the ins and out via the school websites. Just because we have the SS for WA we do not have to move there, but like you really want to give it a chance as it sounds more like what would suit our family needs, and yes if it is not we could easily move states, or indeed head back to the dreary UK Gook luck with the trip, please let us all know how you get on

We have to validate the visa in Aug so if we are unable to sell the house then that will be our main holiday this year. I am just trying to focus on having a good life in OZ and with so much to organise a holiday will be the last thing on my mind, I first of all have to get there, find somewhere to live, find a suitable school for the children and the list goes on!!!! Maybe if I win the lotto then I could have some nice hols )

My wife didnt really believe we were going until about 3 days before. Her brain just didnt accept it. At the same time i was working round the clock to get my masters finished. Handed it in on the wednesday. Pretty much slept all of Thursday as i hadnt slept for 3 nights and flew friday. Landed in Sydney and kind of went "holly crap how did we get here. Now what". I can't believe you did everything so quickly, was it because of a job offer that you headed over there??? Glad it all worked out for you both, that would be pretty scary for me but sometimes it is better that way, sometimes I just wish we had a job offer and they organised it for us, especially on days when we have so much to do!!!!!!!!!! Yeah it was the job. I went to uni as a mature student and studied geology. 6 months before i finshed i was poached by a company in Sydney. So we were lucky in some ways and not others. We couldnt sell the house so ended up selling to one of them companies that guaruntees to buy it, but for a lot less money. Company would also only pay for 10 cubic meters of shipping so we couldnt bring any furnishings. But, although we got less than the house was worth we still made enough to re buy things here. A month after we moved ther GFC hit and i was told the job we had moved for was likely to be made redundant. So, started looking for another job and found a role with my current company but based in Perth, so another move. On the plus side, we very much like where i am, the job has been great - am on 10x the money i had in the UK and the english house went back on the market a couple of months later for less than we had got, so not a bad decision in the end. We did have a mild panic in the house hunting on both moves. Both companies agreed to 2 weeks in a hotel at the expense and on both we found the place on day 14. WOW that is amazing, so glad it worked out for you on most aspects, and glad you have settled in Perth, I really enjoy hearing other people's experiences on how they got to OZ and why they decided to go for it. I suppose if the company paid for you to relocate to another part of OZ that was not too bad but if you had to go through it all on your own then that would be really tough especially as it was all new to you, it just goes to show that no matter what part of the world you live in you will always come across some obstacles, and so glad it worked out for you and your wife. I hope she is enjoying her time back in the UK

X x Hi Lesley I thought they looked fab also, but thought that it might help to also decide on an area also, like the idea that it has a price range so you don't go too over budget. I have actually heard of a few friends who have all now arrived and some of them managed to get a rental before they left but I think a couple had family/friends to help with that, on the job front I am hearing different things all the time, you may be lucky but I thing the majority prefer if you are actually living there first. But I wouldn't stop trying as we may be one of the lucky ones. x
verystormy
Be aware of the new build prices in Australia. The price you see the builders advertise is a long way from the finished price. The advertised base price for example with only have things like one single electric socket per room - cant exactly run a kitchen or something with that. It often doesnt include any light either. We started going down the new build route and what was advertised at $179 ended up at $350k
Guest prathibac
Perth is really good place to live. But compared to melbourne and sydney less population, employment opportunities and entertainment. Initially when i move to australia i was also a bit confused to choose a city. i stayed a couple of days in perth at a friends place where i got the opportunity to explore but coild not last for long time and decided moving to melbourne and have been here since 3 years and found it to be a pretty awesome place. Thanks for that useful bit of info, I was not aware of that, I would only be considering a new build once we're there renting and then going and having a look at the area and the type of house they are offering. Must say that site I mentioned the houses looked really tempting. Hopefully once we are over in OZ earning it would something we could consider as I like the thought of starting from scratch which I am really doing going to OZ!!!! I like going to look at the show houses and the houses illustrated look fab, all modern with spacious open plan )

C&MFOY
Hi Helenaoz2b, OH's job can only be postponed for a few weeks, they will not keep the job open. I think he will get away with 12 weeks. If he goes out alone there is not much we can do about it. Our house is going on the market next week hopefully. Just hoping someone buys it very soon. Had any luck with your house so far? Keep in touch xx
verystormy
If you need to get here quick then you could go down the route that we used which was one of these companies that guaruntee to buy your house. It was very quick. They dont pay the full value, but for us it worked out well as we lost 30k of the value, but just after the sale the financial crisis hit and we they resold it for less than they had given us. Given the UK maybe about to slip back into bleak times it might not be a bad idea if you have enough equity in it.
