Hi there, my husband and i are hoping to move to perth in may this year, but we will need work immediately as we have limited funds. Can anyone advise me on the work situation for a qualified carpenter with 20 years exp in all types of building work, will he be able to walk into work? Thank you.

Hi Ladyjo have you found accommodation yet.... may been an idea to try and secure a rental before you arrive. I know there are tenant agents in Perth that help with this. You should give them a go.

Hi Eva and Dave, we have short term furnished rental for one month from 28th may, through ozhouserentals.com the house is in rockingham, we are hoping to find jobs within the first week as the sale of our house in uk fell through last week and wont be completed now until after we arrive in oz. if i hadnt have paid for flights and accommodation i could have delayed move for a month but thats life, i have been reading the threads on house rentals over in oz and it sounds really difficult to be accepted! i dont even know if the australian border controll will allow us in as we wont have our funds cleared in our bank account till 2 weeks after we arrive. we will be knocking on the door with about 15000 dollars!!!! any advice would be appreciated. my hubby is a phenomenol carpenter and tiler. hope we meet you when we are in oz.

Hi ladyjo,

Stop worrying you will be fine!

Border control ain't gonna check your bank account, in fact I doubt anyone will! We have been here since feb and had less than 15k and we are better than alright!

Were also in Rockingham and loving it and with that amount of cash you won't need to run into work trust me!

It may seem expensive but you will have no worries! Leave the stress in the UK and approach this positively and you'll be okay, I found being cheeky and straight forward with employers gets your foot in the door! Not sure of carpentry. It theres loads of new homes being built in baldivis (10 mins from Rocko) maybe a good place for job search initially!

Good luck and if you need anything drop me a pm and me and sue will try to help where possible.

Get his CV into Skilled - http://www.skilled.com.au. They look after all sorts of trades people and if he can pick up some short term work through them, that would at least give you a start whilst he looks for something more permanent.

We are arriving in September and just had a look at this as thought it would of interest for OH, but the link doesn't seem to work.

Am exactly same as you, my hubby is a carpenter/joiner (27 years expereince)and we arrive 21st May, he's stressing about finding work too. I have a job to go to though. We have a rental in Baldivis for the first month.

Very scary and real now

H i everybody, we finally made it. we are in rockingham, in super house from ozhouserentals that you recommended. its in houston street, owned by a fantastic couple julie and martin , who have given us both all the help we have asked for, sorted out white card, TFN number, van, medicare, super people and property close to everything in rockingham. we have been here two weeks now and the main problem is renting a property long term and finding work , my hubby (the carpenter/tiler/joiner) has applied for 48 jobs and not one reply,
