Guest sophiesindall
I'm really interested in this thread as my husband 'electrician' seems to have loads an loads of drills that he's rather attached too - lol. He wants to bring them but as they are all used and dirty I'm not sure whether they will pass the strict import guidelines. Also, if he does get a job an has no tools how will he work? He's now talking about flying them over - lol. Any advise would be greatly appreciated, I've also heard that dust on tools is ok, it's the mud an dirt on shoes, cars, etc that they are more worried about? Anyone know if that is true? Does all sound rather funny, but tools are expensive.... Lol

Does all sound rather funny, but tools are expensive.... Lol Hi sophiesindall, we brought hubby's tools across. They were all well used and grimy. He cleaned them all one by one with wd40 and break cleaner and steam cleaned the box. When they arrived, they opened one of the drawers checked a couple of things and that was it. It was worth the effort and expense to bring over as it would have been difficult starting from scratch. He had a job lined up for when his tools arrived so was lucky but we know of others which have got by, by borrowing within the workshop until theirs arrived. Hubby has said that tools are very expensive over here. They do have snap on over here but hubby has never bought anything as its so expensive, plus he brought most of snap on of what he needed with him. As jackboots has already said check out eBay and Gumtree to give you an idea. Good luck
Druid
I am an aircraft maintenance engineer and do anything and everything DIY as well, so I know a lot about tools and they are not as expensive as everone is making out, yes Snap-On is expensive here, but it is in in the UK too, I have just brought a ton of tools out from the UK (ask the wife, I am not joking) my extensive tool collection took up a couple of meters of floor space in our 40ft container, in all sorts of condition with no problem, customs or AQIS did not even bat an eyelid, just get rid of any saw dust. Bunnings has an excellent selection of tools (kingchrome) with a lifetime gaurentee, power tools are not badly priced either, if you are going to be a subcontractor it might be worth buying your power tools locally, they are a bit *n*l about H&S over here, you are not even allowed to change the plug over if you are not a certified electrician, what a load of BS, you can also mail order tools from the USA, you dont get stung for tax or duty here (unlike the UK), this is by far the cheapest way of getting good quality tools, check out chads toolbox, i just bought some stuff that I couldnt get locally I brought a selection of hand tools with me on the plane so I had stuff when I first arrived, but keep it to a minimum, the excess baggage charge is £40 per KG, thats a lot of money for tools if you get stung
Guest funkysiger
Cheers druid. Excellent info. I'm not going to be subcontracting going to be in a main dealership so cuts down what i will need. The company has organised so i can take 35 kilo of tools on my flight with me. Plus i'll chuck some in with my normal allowance. It wont get me anywhere near all my tools but it will get me some basic stuff across. The rest i'll try just buy locally if its not to bad price wise
