ali
$150,000 is way about the average wage - you shouldn't have any problems

Guest dan123
Hi dan, where did you find your job I have been looking but can't find any It was more of the job found me I was approached by a company in Perth through a agency in England who had my details on file the job is linked to the mining industry so will not be working in Perth but used as a base when not at work 2 week cycles but I have not received full job details yet just a basic out line and a verbal offer so been trying to find out as much information of Perth and the area . Are you currently in uk looking for work in Perth ? Also I was considering getting a flight out once I receive more job details to have a look around Perth was this something that many people On this site do before coming over ? Obviously there is the cost of the flight to consider Dan

Perth is a lovely place I have a few friends over there And they love it over there Ben Hi Ben I am sure there are people on here who could point you in the right direction . You could try logging you're cv with different job agencies that recruite in the uk and abroad in the field of work youre looking for that's all I did and if they have anything that suits they will contact you . I have had two job others in about 4 years and they have both been in Australia so it's not quick but you never know it might be worth a try but might be a long wait . Guest dan123
I'm a railway tech which basically is someone who helps in track design when the rail is replaced . I have a question if anyone can help If you come over on a visa but manage to sell you're house in uk can you buy in Australia or do you have to rent and for what length of time ? Dan
verystormy
No, you can buy. You need to get FIRB approval (foreign investment review board) but it's just a formality. The only issue you will have is being on a 457 visa is credit will not be as good as a perm resident. However, most companies are happy to sponsor perm residence when you have been there 12 months and to be honest you are best renting for 12 months at first to get a grip on where you want to buy. Buying a car and things are all ok though generally you will need to get finance through the dealer which is a bit more expensive and they will insist the duration of the loan is less than the duration of your visa. Likewise credit cards, we got one with no problems with our banks - NAB but the limit was on the low side. Have you worked FIFO before? I love it
Guest dan123
thanks wasnt to sure if there were regulations stopping you from buying the thought of renting for years at some of the rental prices i have seen does not appeal but it would make sense to rent for at least a year if i decide to pursue the job just trying to way everying up at the moment im still in the early stages of all this so thanks. im also considering getting a flight over further down the line once i have seen the work contract at the minute everything has been over the phone so a bit sketchy and having a look around perth so if anyone has any ideas on ways if there are any of booking cheaper flights out would love to here thanks del . fifo what does that stand for ? Guest Cozzy
Hi Mate, We are here on a month reckie in Perth to find schools and areas we like. If you have kids the schooling is important as there are good ones and not so good ones (Like everywhere). $150k would be enough for you all but we have found the weekly food shop is more but but then we have not had the 'friday night takeaway' we had in England once a week. So on a whole it evens out. The fuel is around $1.50 a litre so a bit cheaper than England. Cars are pricey to buy eg; 07 Plate BMW X5 $65K. Aussie brands like Holden are cheaper. Bring your Car if it passes the criteria. I would say it might be worth a trip first to see if its for you. How is your better half with FIFO situation? All I can say is in the time we have been here we have loved it and cant wait to come over for good. If they are going to pay your costs aswell I would say lucky old you. We are looking at about a total cost inc visas x 5, shipping crate, car transfer and import tax, Flights, £20k. It depends how much you want it mate, some people are not prepared to give up anything they had in England. Thats fine if your loaded with cash. Some have to make a few sacrifices. On a whole i would say you would have a better standard of living but everyone is different. I work and live in London and the prices are really high. I have a treble standard of living although my income is above London average running my own buisness. We have found the house prices here quite high but you get a great house for the money. Anything near or in view of a beach is over $600k easy (Most are over $800k) Come to the suburbs and you can find some nice houses a bit cheaper ($350#$500k area depending) but then you get into the school catchment game...and the prices go up again..just like home! Rentals are around the $400#$500 dollars a week for a family and if your lucky you may get a pool. Hope ive been of some help, good luck. Dave PS ; FIFO= Fly in Fly out. Guest dan123
Thanks dave more info the better my wife does not have a problem she has worked abroad before so as soon as I mentioned it she has it in her head we are going I tend to chew things over a bit more and been working cost out using the links on here and other web sites I recon I will be slightly better off in Perth i would be doubling my wages but doubling some bills . taking in account all the bills compared to what I pay in the north of England things a bit cheaper than london my mortgage in uk is £500 pound a month and working out on about $500 dollars a week renting in Perth I should still be in front then long term once out of the renting Market and buying a property and sell the one in uk financially I would expect to be slightly better off . By the way did you book you're flights in advance was wondering if it's possible to get a better deal if you leave it late may be try to get a week off work next month and fly out dan . In regards to flights we found them cheaper to book in advance rather than a 'late booking as such'. And be careful around Olympics time as it will all go up in price. Its great over here mate. Theres really not much to dislike! We are looking at Ocean Reef area. Would like Hillarys but very expensive. Burns Beach is nice but out the catchment areas for the schools. Guest dan123
once i have one or two things sorted will start looking at flights but it will have to be more a flying visit than a month stay so will have to make a list of the areas to visit have two kids so area and school will be important . have you also looked at work dave or are you going to leave it till you move out and what line of work are you in ? Guest Cozzy
Hi Dan, Im in the Plumbing and Gas Industry. I have had a look at the work situation and im a lucky enough to be going out with a firm for a day next week to get a feel for the Aussie way of the Industry. I will need to retrain out here to get my Aussie qualifications as the British ones I have dont stand up out here. Ive done the Vetasses Aussies trade test in England and that helps a bit. But I will have a period when I get here when I wont be earning much money so I will have to budget for that. Once qualified the wages are good. I might even do a bit of FIFO (Fly in Fly out) Stuff to help get some dosh in the bank. One things for sure mate this is where I want my family to grow up. Check out some of the areas ive mentioed above when you come but theres loads of lovely suburbs. Go further south or in land and you get better value for money on the homes. Because its so big you need to do some research and pick an area to visit otherwise you wont have time. For example a start would be do you want to live north or south of the river? Then pick a 3 square mile area and concentrate on that for schools, rentals etc. Thats what we are doing any way, theres no real right or wrong way Dan, good luck mate. Dave i will do that with limited time will try to narrow down a few areas is there much difference between north and south of the river ? is one area more built up for example ? Guest Cozzy
Hi Mate, No where is what you can call built up really. Most homes are single storey with large kitchen / living area that opens onto an outside living area. Newer homes dont have big gardens older ones tend to have a bigger plot. Some of the new homes are stunning though! If truth be known I havent really ventured south of the river much but as its more in land i would guess its a little cheaper unless your down on the coast ie; South Fremantle. I cant imagine its much different. We have friends in the northern area so it is natural for us to go there.
Guest dan123
i was talking to someone from perth today in my local who has lived there for 30 years but comes back regular and says he still struggles in the heat in the hotest months from november onwards and says it can be really hard work . said there is a breeze from the coast that can cool things down so i suppose the further in land you are the hotter it gets . ali
Sometimes the Fremantle Doctor (the breeze) doesn't cool things down at all. We've had the hottest summer this year I think for about 30 years, and yest at times it was very difficult.

Very good point and Ive been told exactly the same. Trouble is property with even a minute view of the sea are VERY expensive. But even if your half a mile in land its got to be cooler with a brezze. I am a little concerned about the summer months here. Im here at the moment and I think its lovely weather ( 23, sunny with a little cloud, Some rain thats clears the air every now and then, not cold at all, shorts and tee shirt). But anyone whos been here a while is walking around in jeans and hoodies saying its frezzing . Ive only ever been over this time of year. Is it really that bad in summer months?? Can anyone enlighten me please? (Just see your last post Ali....Thanks I have my answer..... Its bloody boiling!.)
