Hi

So Dh arrived in Perth last week to start work. I will follow in a few weeks with two small kids. I didnt want to be in short term accommodation as the baby (18mths) is a nightmare climber etc! So DH has the task of finding a rental property!

I want to be able to entertain two kids during the day without having to use a car. I love walking and hate getting kids in and out of car seats. So I want somewhere with a bit of a buzz, preferably close to a beach and oh I would die and go to heaven if there were nice shops too! I thought maybe Hillarys sounded nice. DD1 will be starting Kindergarten in 2013 so nice schools would be nice too.

Can anyone recommend any areas to me as now he is there Im not sure how much I trust him to get it right! And as its only renting then its not the end of the world if its not perfect but would prefer not to have to move in 6 mths time!! Thanks so much!

Afraid I am going to be very unhelpful and say that coping all day with two young kids with no car is completely unrealistic. There are so many activities for preschoolers - playgroups and mothers groups, swimming classes, kindermusic, gym, dance, and fantastic playgrounds that you'd be missing out. Public transport is not good in terms of frequency. If you really want a no car life style then Fremantle would meet your needs.

+1 for Freo. We have a car but just don't use it. Everywhere in Freo is walking distance and there's the Free CAT bus. Trains to Perth are a bit of a schlock and property prices are massively inflated but if you can find a rental it's a great place to live.

Thanks for that! I know the no car thing is a bit silly really, suppose we all have our dreams! Will send DH Fremantle this weekend! Thanks again!

Hey Daisy, We are in Hillarys and have a 13 & 9 year old. We initially lived in Butler which was a heck of a way out from the CBD. We moved to Hillarys 6 years ago when it became clear there wasn't much for the kids to do when they got older. Hillarys is brilliant for families, easy walk to good schools, shopping centre and beach/parks etc. There are three real parts of Hillarys, the ultra posh/pricy Harbour Rise area, the cheap 1970's bit near the shopping centre and Marmion Ave and the Cook Ave/Waterford middle areas. The cheap 1970's bit is probably going to be re-zoned soon to allow more subdivision of blocks which will se prices start to go up when you can demolish a $550k 1970's crap-hole into 2 x blocks worth $450k each. It's not a bad longer term option. the buses are ultra reliable and on a weekend or during school hols you can get a Family Day Pass for all Perth public transport (even down to Mandurah) for $9.20 for a family of up to 7!!
