Sammy1970
Was reading Perth Now earlier, and stumbled on an article describing Perth as the 2nd most expensive city to live in Australia behind Sydney. Whilst I understood Perth to be expensive, my potential salary of circa $125k, to me was all relative to the cost of living in Perth, however the article was answered by over 150 comments and to any potential migrant, it didn't make good reading:wideeyed: http://www.perthnow.com.au/business/perth-is-second-most-expensive-city-but-lifes-still-pretty-good/story-e6frg2qc-1226344366545 Click on the 151 comments
verystormy
There is no escaping perth is expensive. Your salary would be about the same as earning about £50k in england. Though housing is more expensive again. Think of it as like earning 50k but living in central London
Sammy1970
It wasn't so much about the salary, it was to do with the negativity about Perth as a whole. The comments paint a completely different picture from what gets spoken about on here.
ali
If you go on our sister site PIO you'll find a lot of negatives about Perth .. many comments from people who have never been. I think PP offers a very realistic look at life in Perth, None of us think that it's perfect, it is expensive, but many of us do cope and families who are on less than $125,000 cope too. It will, like anywhere else in the world, depend on where you live and what youre lifestyle is like. Whilst some people talk about it being isolated (like it's cut off from the rest of the world), others find that attractive, being nearer to Asia rather than Sydney is also a bonus for some and not for others. Think about the reasons you chose Perth as your destination ... do those reasons still exist?
verystormy
Every place in the world has pluses and negatives. Every place in the world will suit somebody. Heck, I tried to persuade a colleague to move from the DRC but he loves it there too much. But no place will suit everybody. What do you want from Perth? Guest AUSSIE FINANCE BROKER
Perth is a fabulous place to live, Beautiful weather, beautiful beaches and and more laid back than the other states. I met a UK guy today who said he went to Melbourne first. The weather is so miserable there, he now lives in and loves Perth. I always tell people we need to go away on holiday outside of WA to realise how lucky we are!!
Give me a break!
I think its best to talk to people who acually live and work here, as Ali said for some reason people get so negative about here I dont know why. $125,000 a year is a lovely salary and will afford you a lovely area and a nice life, it might not give you THE most expensive areas but there are plenty of us having fantastic lives in the not so expensive areas. Sammy1970
The article itself seemed to attract a host of people who wanted to stick the boot into those in power with comfortable lifestyles, without due consideration for those less fortunate. Unfortunately this trait stems to most politicians/government members across the globe, and isn't uncommon. I was more concerned at the amount of people who had noticed a significant decline in society as a whole so rapidly over the last 5/10 years,in terms of crime/violence/drugs/,gang fighting, muggings, etc etc, and that people's perceptions were this would only get worse in time unless the WA authority's did something to prevent it happening, and also given its 'isolated' geographical location, it will get worse. Dont get me wrong,I'm fully appreciative of all of the above going on where I live just now, however I know my boundaries here, emigrating to another city/country can be very daunting having to acclimatise to a whole new set of boundaries if you know what I mean. ali
I've lived here for 5 years and can't say that i've noticed a significant decline in society and behaviours, and what does get reported is significantly less than what I read in the UK newspapers

Scot01
totally agree with you - was just about to write the same - there is so little news that things that wouldn't be reported elsewhere get reported here - giving a warped impression! Philpom
The media love to report negative news rather than happy stories as it makes for better headlines. I was living in a middle class area in Dublin and there was more shootings in that suburb alone than there is in the whole of WA, so you will just have to make up your own mind and don't believe every piece of sensational journalism. Sammy1970
Thanks for everyones comments/views. Im sure any expats on here will appreciate any concerns potential migrants may have during theyre research of Perth. As I mentioned before, theres non-stop news of muggings, murders, gangland violence, etc etc etc all over the UK including where I live just now, but again I suppose its akin to knowing the devil you do than the one you dont,if you know what I mean. The salary is all based on my income, and my wife will also be working as a hairstylist, altho we're not sure what the potential earnings for her will be,so hopefully we will live a good lifestyle in a lovely area. As an ex newspaper reporter I take exception to your crass comments about the media. Newspapers write about what is going on in society, both good and bad. They don't make the news. If there are lots of negative news stories on a particular day then that's down to reality, nothing to do with sensationsalism. Perhaps The West Australian should have put a feel good story about a charity bike ride on it's front page instead of the devastating impact of Sunday's storm to make you feel better. Would have looked bloody stupid though. Today's front page includes a piece about the child sexual and physical abuse at 26 children's homes across WA. The victims included former child migrants from the UK sent to these places in the 1940s and 1950s and who have now been awarded ex-gratia payments by the Australian government. Not sensationalism, mate. It's the truth. But hey maybe the paper shouldn't report the scandal because it's a negative story.
mike87
I also work in the media, and have worked in several radio Newsrooms. We are informing everyone about what is going on in the world, or in WA, as it's impossible for everyone to be in one place at a time. It's important to make sure we are as unbiased as possible, and, on the whole, there is less campaign based News in the West Australian, compared to the British Tabloids and a lot of commercial radio stations in the UK - there's more focus on reporting the news in a raw format. I don't work for the west by the way, but work for a Radio Station in Perth, and freelance for 2 Australian News and Sport Networks. Blaming the media's an easy excuse.... We don't make the news, you do!

I live 45km from Perth and work in the CBD and I can tell you Perth is ludicrously expensive. Moved to WA after 9 years in NSW so have some perspective, unlike those who have never lived outside Perth. House prices in Perth are a joke and the cost of eating/ drinking out is a farce, especially for families. Two weeks ago went to a restaurant in Northbridge to celebrate our wedding anniversary with friends. The bill came to $449 for four adults and one child. This included a starter and main course each, 2 bottles of wine and two bottles of beer. The food was good but $30 for a spinach and paneer dish ? Not surprised places like Maccas, KFC and Hungry Jacks do so well here. They are always packed round here. Expect to pay at least $8-$10 for a bog standard beer. In NSW hubby paid $5 for a good quality beer. As for the $125,000 salary, it's great if you are single but won't go far in Perth if it's the sole income supporting a partner and 2-3 kids. Lakelands is a mediocre suburb about 55km from Perth just outside Mandurah so $125,000 would go further, similar to mediocre Baldivis. Given a choice I would prefer to live a lot closer to Perth, preferably Cottesloe or Fremantle, but unless we win the lottery we won't be moving there anytime soon. Perthites can defend their city till the cows come home but you can't get away from the fact Perth is an expensive place to live, especially for those of who don't work in the mines. Philpom
Well my previous post seems to have rattled some cages. I don't remember saying that the media doesn't report good news stories and I know we haven't got anything like the British tabloids here, but my point is that if you watch the evening news and compare the number of stories of death, war, destruction, poverty, etc., it outweighs the number of feelgood stories. Guest Legal Angel
Perth is not very expensive city.your salary is enough and same as compare to England. What planet are you on???? Have you won the lottery or something? Perth is ridiculously expensive - $7.50 for a box of cereal, $1500 a month for rent - food/drink/utilities/a night out - very expensive. I live 30k NOR, rent is prohibitive, and I have much less money in my pocket at the end of the week compared to Ireland, which is why I am going back. I don't work in the mines and have a reasonably paid job but almost half of the other poster, and its hard work trying to make ends meet. Its very different if you are single or if you have family. I have a child and childcare is an insane price. Everybody's situation is different but to say its not expensive or the high wages make up for it is not true.
