Guest shelleyandykids
Hi How much MONEY £££ = $$$ would you say an average family would take to oz to start a new life? This is after paying for all costs like shipping, flights, insurance and the cost of your short term rental for 4 to 6 weeks? Ok,its only fair for me to start ,we are a family of four ,need to buy one or two motors and to find a long term let within 6weeks, allso other hidden exspences that will occur on are way, and need to get job quickly. Would you be happy or worried if you were taking £10,000? we are happy Thanks
Guest Claire and Brian
I'll be keeping an eye in this thread. We're looking at clearing our debts then selling up. That could take 5 years tho. It would mean we'd have about 30k to take to oz that way.

Would you be happy or worried if you were taking £10,000? we are happy Thanks We are a family of 4 (our girls are 3 and 1) from London and I arrived in Perth in February 2012 with only (£10,500). My wife and 2 girls stayed with relatives in Brisbane for a month while I looked for work, a place to live, a car etc. (I stayed with friends for a month). I managed to find a job on my 3rd day and bought a 2nd hand car for $5000 in the second week. It took me a month to find a decent clean 3 bedroom rental property for $400 per week. We shipped over about 8 boxes and no furniture. We've had to buy all new furniture, including a fridge, washing machine, dishwasher, couches, dining room table, drawers, beds and appliances and other stuff as well as tools for my trade. We have pretty much nothing left so now its a matter of slowly building up some savings again. Its been a bit nerve racking living off just my wage but we absolutely love it here. The weather is near perfect, the open space and beaches and the general relaxed vibe is brilliant. We knew it was going to be a bit tough in the beginning but its been worth it. Good luck Paul
PaulandDeb
It can be done see above, but it takes a lot of effort and some luck - rentals are hard to catch here lately. Good luck.
Guest levimouse
I'm very interested in this thread. We hadn't planned on taking anywhere near £10k with us out to Perth. We would have capital from our house sale but wanted to keep that for a deposit on another house should we want to buy a house in Oz in the future. I predict that we will have £5-£7.5k by the time our VISAs are issued. Does anyone else think we're mad? I wouldn't come out with that money if I hadn't secured a job though. kevinhogg
Hi - We been here 7 wks now and found that the cash doesn't go very far. We have been in our long term rental for three weeks now and had to buy furniture n stuff as our belongings don't land until the 15th of June, we bought a full house package, two more bedroom packages and outdoor furniture from SuperAmart all for around $6500 just to set us up and to be honest, its not that bad quality compared to alot of flat pack stuff back in the UK. Second hand cars frighten the life out me over here!! I personnally think they are expensive but I know others will disagree. We got desperate with the rental situation and was spending a fortune on accomodation, we looked around loads and ended up in Yanchep paying over the odds and are a bit isolated, although the kids have settled in school well. But yeah I think you should be able to make a start on £10k. Weve both now got jobs after a shaky start, although the wages aren't as good as we expected. - Cheers Kev Hi How much MONEY £££ = $$$ would you say an average family would take to oz to start a new life? kevinhogg
Hi Andy, we have two girls 14 and 9yrs old and they both made friends straight from the off. Im a builder and my OH Rach is working at Quinns in early learning / pre-school. We came out in January 2012 for a few weeks to have a look around and activate the visa and only lasted a couple of weeks back in Sheffield before we decided to go for it! We own a pub there and managed to rent it out then landed back here on the 8th April, unprepared I might add! We have now settled in though and as I said, apart from the wages being less than imagined its great! The start of a new adventure. How old are your kids Andy? kevinhogg
Hi Paul - Have you set up on your own or are you working for someone? Also how are you finding work, is it alot different over here, I'm a bricklayer and its totally different experience for me, like starting over. Getting my head around it now though. Cheers Kev Hey Kev, It does feel like you have to start over again, even plumbing is quite a bit different here. I had to go on a 2 week migrant plumbing course at Fremantle TAFE as prescribed by the Plumbing Licensing Board of WA. I started a new job 2 weeks ago as a contractor plumber and applied for an ABN (Australian Business Number). My previous job was plumbing on residential housing (new builds) all over Perth where as now I plumb transportable containers (donga's) and kitchens for the mine sites up north. Are you working? There should be loads of work for you in Perth. I can't believe the amount of new builds in this city. Paul
kevinhogg
Hey Paul - There is loads of houses being built but it was hard to get a chance not having any experience. I am working on the new builds for a subby but was hoping to be off the tools, although it is proving to be the best way to get obtain the knowledge and its working out ok. Just could do with being a bit closer as Im travelling into and past Perth city everyday from Yanchep, past loads of new estates that are being built. Im on the ABN but it doesn't do much for your credit rating! A finance bloke told me its better to be unemployed than self employed!! ha. I could do with setting up on my own but it might take a while. Do you live NOR? - Kev
