nollie
so sorry to be stupid, but when you say bulk bill, do they send bills to you once per year, or does it mean that you just pay the diff to them and they claim rest from medicare etc
JAK
Hi Nollie, I have been wondering about this too, I found this today http://www.medicareaustralia.gov.au/public/register/how-works.jsp
Philpom
It just means the doctor doesn't charge you a cent. You just visit the GP and they bill direct to Medicare. Some GP's don't do this. You are required to fork out the full fee for the visit and then go to Medicare and claim a partial refund.
PaulandDeb
Average docs cost if you pay on exit for us is $70 a visit, you get $40 back via Medicare.
ali
My GP don't bulk bill but does the medicare rebate back into your account right away.
Philpom
Some GP's don't offer that service of the rebate at source. Well at least our family GP doesn't.

Atchy
Yep. I'm confused too!
ali
No they're not private GP's, some GP's decide to bulk bill (mine just does it for older adults and children). I know my area doesn't have any bulk billing practices. Obviously those that are will be popular and getting appointments might be difficult. ali
so why doesnt eveyone just find a bulk billing gp, i still dont get this..... Not all areas have bulk billing practises, and their lists may get full. For me the convenience of a good practise is more important than having to travel to another suburb. I don't know if those that aren't bulk billing offer more services??? My GP does minor surgery, they've glued my sons head and stitched my hubbys. It's also an out of hours practise, run by our own GP's (7 days a week), so we know we can rock up out of hours and still be able to see our own GP's who have access to our medical records ... so don't know if the charges go towards this
Guest guest1228
We are quite comfortable now with our GPs, I see a lovely lady Dr and the kids and OH see the same male Dr, helps to have some continuity with your GP I think. Doesnt bother me to pay the $30 consultation fee tbh for the amount of times I go....if I were needing to go more frequently though I might be tempted to look for a bulk billing one
ali
My GP's are great, they removed a lesion for me recently, paid normal price for consultation and got back on medibank. Had to pay $30 for stitching/dressing etc., didn't have to pay for pathology for the lesion to be tested, nor did I pay for the consultation to have the stitches removed by the Dr. who did them himself. How did you discover yours Ali? and do you just go in and register? Would be interested to know where your surgery is located.. it sounds like just what we would need. lozzachino
When we arrived in perth i found a local area resident page on facebook where people can ask questions about the area and get advice, etc. i found our bulk billing doctor on there and they are fantastic. Its not necessarily the case that fee paying doctors are better or provide more services. Our drs do all sorts of pathology and procedures with no cost involved. Ours is brighton beach medical centre in merriwa. Even though we moved out the area we are still going there for now.
