Guest Cozzy
Thats the same with me , I get loads of cv's after work.its a bit scary , us lot being at the bottom of the pecking order. i still believe its going to be a case as over here , it's who you know not what. i e mailed a guy from energy safe ages ago ( I'll try to find it) he was an English bloke teaching the gas elements in Perth . He said that he'd need to see my gas elements and hopefully RPL them as Richard ( above) said.I've just re sat my core elements( the 5 yearly ones) the big difference guys is plumber paul is over there and has done it , some of us are still dreaming it. its going to be hard and scary , but imagine if loads of eastern Europeans kept asking us for work in the uk. You would be p**ed off with them.probably that's how the aussie feel Chin up Ian Yeah thats what Im on about mate, we are the migrants so what you say is very true. Have you got a date to go yet Ian? Bummer having to do all your Core elements again before you go!! But its good to refresh anyway...I hate the class room situation as Im just terrible at concentrating my focus for hours on end. Not looking forward to MORE exams in OZ. As Richard P says is a bit of a money spinner for them over there....We've already had to pay out for the Vetasses! By the time we have done the plumbers licence and then the Gas i reckon that will be a round £3000 ish on exams just to be able to work. Then the fun starts trying to find work! ( Im sounding negative again......NOTE TO SELF...Cheer the F**K UP BALDY!! ) LOL PS; pm sent mate.

Guest Cozzy
OMG thats because I didnt put it on the PM. LOL...Told you I have no concentration!! LOL. We was going to go in Feb 2013 too as thats the start of the school term and would be nice for kids to go into a class room at start of a term. But like you mate really busy at present and we are thinking it would be madness to jump over now what with being so busy. All our friends are in the North (ish) near Hilarys Harbour/Ocean Reef area so thats where we would like to head but very pricey so may have to settle in a near by suburb. We validated our visas in April this year with a trip over..didnt want to come home I can tell you..very nearly just stayed there!! Lovely feeling to know we could have just done so! If it wasnt for the Kids we would have. We stayed in an older suburb called Padbury for a month which was nice. The school catchments really affect the prices of rentals and buys...but thats the same as any where i suppose. Are you a Golfer Ian? Great golf courses over there mate. Maybe we could all meet up and have a Plumbers meet at a nice golf club and carve up a posh club one sunday (or mid week if none of us have jobs! LOL). You cant be a plumber and not play golf! What about you other lads Paul..Richard P? Golfers? New PM sent Ian.

Cheers Ian Yeah we need the Primary school aswell. We looked at Beaumaris primary which is near Ocean Reef. The Youth football is great over there. When we looked around Ocean Reef high school they have Elite football acadameys that the kids can get into if they good enough and they go on tours and stuff. They have other Elite subjects aswell such as Music and Marine studies. I was really impressed with both schools. Trouble is the catchments are really small and the estate agents know that you want to be in them...same old story really. I think you just got to be a bit lucky when looking for a rental. But like you mate not sure we can afford to be in this area aswell. All our mates kids are at these schools so would be ideal for our Kids. I better get out to work...need more Dosh! PS; LOL.....RE; The ears! Hilarious! Bald AND big ears....Im getting a picture in my head mate! You know Perth gets a little windy at times!!!! Thats not a bad idea Mark! We could have the Vans wrapped in Union Jacks with the Royal Anthem banging out from the speakers! Thing is theres not much to there gas work out there .... Thats what makes me laugh!! Certainly not like what we have over to contend with over here. They dont even have landlord certs on let properties (They are thinking about starting them soon). No heating wiring or combi fault finding....just straight forward gas pipework feeding a Hob and a gas fired hot water cylinder. They sometimes hard pipe the gas bbq's aswell which is wierd. Mine you some of the 'bbq,s' are more like outside kitchens! Well one things for sure lads we're all about to find out!! We should all stick together via this thread and keep each other posted on what the real deal is out there in regards to the work climate out there. I dont expect people to come on saying there jobs here and jobs there just give people some good advice...after all we are all Brits abroad! Guest Mandi71
My OH is a Plumber and Gas fitter, just recently finished all his training and has been through the mill since we got here so if anyone has any questions please feel free to PM him. Its not as easy as people think, at one time we were gonna have to go home, he'd been out of work for 6 weeks and we were down to our last dollar. Hes working on site at the minute for a new hospital build and there's more money to earn on the commercial side than domestic. Some employers were offering him 25-30 an hour, which sounds alot but believe me it's not. I was earning more than that in an office. Hes only a contractor now do he panics about the job finishing and where his next job will be but he's just putting the time in and hoping they keep him on. Most companies are asking for 1-5 years WA experience now and the wages have dropped because there's so many trades here at the minute but don't give up, get out there and meet people at the clubs, pubs and football etc. one thing we've learnt out here, it's not what you know it's who you know!!! mandi Edited August 7, 2012 by Mandi71

That the problem...They all want 5 years WA experience. A friend of mine was asked to leave site because someone told the Foreman that he didnt have the experience even though he was doing the work as they instructed and quicker than alot of others. The Foreman even attmitted that he was doing fine but the top guys got wind and he had to leave. It has scared me slightly I cant lie. The very best of luck to you and your hubby. All I can say is I do know people who are earning huge money working in the commercial Gas sector. Hang on in there. I think things are gonna get worse before they get better here in the UK. lukeplumber
Hello fellow english men! Ive been in oz for 2 years now and life is going great. i have now settled down with my partner and is now on a defacto visa! i worked in broome WA with a plumbing company for 8 months then left for a job on mine site just north Derby WA with me and my partner both getting jobs. money was good but life was sh*t and time went so quick doing 2 weeks on 1 week off 12hrs a day slept 3 days when i was on break:-/ . i plumbed in uk for 8yrs before leaving for oz and found a job plumbing in broome quite easy but from what im reading now was luckly and now thinking i was stupid to leave as they offerd me tickets ect...., plumbing in oz is miles different from the uk, i was mainly fixing main line water leaks which i had no exp doing as water board does that in uk but got the hang of it plumbings plumbing, as my old boss use to tell "all it is mate is just A to B" soldering is different we use hard solder over here and use oxy bottles hard at start off with but easy to pick up, lots of maintenance work and bathroom fitting. i now live in perth left the mines to get back in the plumbing industry, im just waiting for my uk police check and then applying for my tradesperson licence. Im working for a drainage company atm and just poking my nose about at plumbing work, is there any uk plumbers in perth who could give me any advise before doing my tradepersons licence and how about getting my contractors licence, not affraid of cost as like i said have had no life just saving for every penny since ive been working on the mine site. i live in myaree about 15mins from fremantle and perths CBD. Even if you would like to meet and have a drink somewhere would be great and share stories, ive worked all around WA and know quite a few contacts so might even be able to help yous out, Great if someone could help! Guest Shacks86
Hey Luke. I'm in a similar situation. I've only been in Australia since start of January and I'm currently trying to get a job on the mines or in Perth. I'm currently in the middle of getting my WA license and its Gould hopefully be sorted within the next week. Do you have any contacts for any jobs outside of Perth. I may have to start looking into drainage jobs myself. Any info would be much appreciated! Thanks.
Guest Andig
Hi all, i have been reading this thread, which started of last year, has anyone made it out there yet? i need to do some more research as I'm looking at a skilled and state sponsor and am led to believe that i do my Oz skill set over here which gives me my Oz plumbing licence interested in the cost of living, i work more in commercial work in London and have done for 20 years but to survive have to earn about 55K gross, that means 7 days a week, luckily office people don't like to see trade in their office so loads of overtime, and i need it with wife and 4 girls LOL!!!! i have experience in plumbing, heating but i also done air con for 15 years along with duct work, commissioning, i now run my own company and am looking at 1million for my first year turnover, but still think it would be a better place in Oz for wife and kids. i am starting a 489 permit and have to look at southern WA around the Bunbury area for part of sponsorship. so Q is with the way the UK is heading and comments about Oz where would be the better place for a family?? i have no savings, no pension, not a lot of equity work all the time, i think i would still be happy to be the same finically but with more quality time to be with the family, at least there is the option to get out and about in nice weather rather than having the kids stuck indoors, this country is to commercial now i like the idea that shops close at 6 o'clock all everybody wants you to do is spend spend spend, but all on material things rather than quality of life> anyway enough of all that rubbish i don't want to start on the politics of the UK, just want to start getting the feel for life away from here. any advice appreciated. Georgiajoemillie
A dig, I'm a uk plumber in Perth and ill give you a quick update on the experience I've had since arriving here. ive been plumbing in the uk for 24 years running my own business fort last 11 years. we arrived in perth on 25 th Jan 13 . Before I came across I got my visa Pr176,though vetassess giving me a level 3 overseas license its not worth even using it or toilet paper over here, it just gets you your visa. i applied for my plumbers license while still in the uk, I sent all my qualifications off to the plumbers board, you can't pay or anything until you arrive but at least your in the system. When you arrive go into West Perth pay $ 250 ish ( can't remember exact) for license, takes about 2 weeks to get. i then started applying for jobs, went through the masters plumbers site and e mailed my cv to around 40 firms, and signed up to every job site , papers etc. Not one reply. i then made phone calls to firms , better as you can speak to people , response was have you got your gas ticket , Not yet, thanks but no thanks. Next, off to Polytechnic West TAFE ( college), a guy there Wayne ( Welsh guy) is brilliant ,he has a system where you can RPL you UK gas qualifications , I did 1 day theory and 3 days practical. It's different than uk, you have to fusion weld plastic pipe, weld steel plates, cut using oxy, weld brackets, LPG in caravans and boats. Don't let this worry you as I'd never done most of this before but its a breeze . Cost of training was $ 777 plus books of around $100 that's if you've it a PR visa cost is about $1600 if you on a sponsored regional one. Wait 2 weeks for confirmation and apply for gas license $ 70 . Apply for more jobs , what quals have you got, well got my plumbing licence, white card ( do this online $ 70), applied for as license, ok what WA plumbing experience ave you got. none, sorry but its different than the uk . what the ****, at this point I was on a big downer, I made calls after calls and was getting the same response. I said to my wife that this visa process is a big on, plumbing on shortage list they get you over , your savings disappear into there economy and you can't get work. i was offered a job with an electrical appliance repair company , but to service gas appliance you need to do another 3 week course at a cost of $ 2000, couldn't afford to do it and the time i started applying for any job in desperation to get $$$$ in. Still no joy , I was tuned down for a packers job. i then applied or another plumbers job, this one self employed staying yet again min 5 years WA experience . Luckily the manager who took the call is English and I was straight to the point ( before they he could say what exp do you have) , told him can't find work please give me a go. I said that could I work with one of his blokes for nothing so I could learn / see WA way. He said yes no problems , YES did you say YES . day before I started he called and said that he's chucking me in at the deep end and I'm on my own. Met on site, he showed me what a sani involves off you go. ive been with them for 3 weeks now doing mainly sanis and finals/ chromes, money is good if you work for it.( I've not worked this hard in years ) The funny thing is , is that I DON'T need my GAS TICKET , as they have a firm that does the gas , and the firm I'm working for I applied for work via e mail and a call but with no luck. one big point to say, talking to Wayne at polytechnic , he said that he gets loads of uk gas fitters across with no plumbing qualifications. theses guys have to start from scratch , do, I think 6 months + plumbing course to get their license. Over here you can't just have a gas ticket like in uk, you HAVE to get your plumbing license before you can have a gas one. with the RPL , do a first aid course before you come out ( I was a youth soccer coach) I did mine before I left, you need it. Get a ref from ex boss stating you have erected tower scaffolding, filled in around flue pipes, worked on a scissor lift. As these are all elements you need crossed off. THIS IS JUST MY EXPERIENCE, SOME OTHERS MIGHT OF BEEN LUCKIER AND FOUND GETTING WORK EASIER any questions fire away ill try and help cheers ian

Perth is a very small place, so it's wise to network as much as possible. Good luck to all of you.
Rossmoyne
Been following this thread for a while and the common theme that keeps coming up is that "it isn't what you know, but who you know". This is so correct in all avenues of life in WA. Lived here for over 21 years and experienced it first hand. It is small town mentality in a very big geographic State. Beautiful place to live mind you, but you have to adjust your thinking. So my advice is to everyone looking for employment, whatever your skillset or career ambition, is to cultivate "contacts" as you go. When it comes to job hunting, don't just reply to ads on Seek.com, various other websites or even in the paper. You actually need to go into workplaces with a hard copy of your CV in hand and talk about yourself and what your skills are. Offer to do unpaid work experience so the employer can see what you can do and what you are worth. Register at the many employment agencies for temp work, even if it isn't in your skillset. Surely a week labouring to earn money is better than no money coming in? So many people I know, both migrants and Aussies, have gained employment this way. But you need to be patient. It isn't the way of things in UK, but it is what works in WA in so many arenas. It worked for me eventually once I listened to my family already living here. After a year of doing stuff through temp agencies and various work experience placements, I was offered a 3 month contract with a government department. This then led on to other job opportunities. However you have to bear in mind that WA is the master of contract work. There is much more contract work than permanent positions here. If you can deal with that, you will be fine, but you need to be on the ball workwise all the time. You also need to build into the employment arena the fact that the mining industry is slowing down and that skilled and unskilled workers are now returning to Perth looking for work. Employers in Perth are now receiving so many applications for positions that they can be extremely picky and choosy about who they want. Which will mean that migrants could be further down the list. Dont like it or agree with it, but it is happening. Sorry if this is not what you want to hear.... but this is how it is and you need to be aware of this. Until my retirement at the end of last year, I was a Recruitment Manager with a large government department in WA and I also worked closely with other Recruitment Managers in industry, so I feel I can make an informed post on this subject. I wish you all good luck in gaining employment once you arrive in WA, but just be aware of how it is here.
Guest Andig
Hi Ian, i read your comments with interest. i am a plumber by trade, but do not have current Gas, i normally get a subcontractor to install the boilers but i carry out the surveys when quoting, so some experience. but i mainly have dealt with commercial so heating systems from20Kw-1000Kw, i also have my CITB in refrigerants and have installed and maintained splits and VRV air con system along with chillers, i have also done pipe fitting and dealt with LTHW & Chilled systems with FCU. i have my IPATH which covers access platforms and scissor lifts, also just completed BPEC on Hot Water System to cover sealed installs. BMS controls, duct-work, ventilation and i can carry out commissioning of water flow rates and ventiulation systems so I'm hoping i would have a versatile back ground. i take on board your comments and as I'm planning to come out summer 2014 would you advise doing by Gas here or waiting until i come out, theres no point in doing it twice!!!! also i will do a first aid course along with the scaffolding towers, like you say its better to cover all points. but i do realise its who you know not what you know so if i keep active and start trying to network from here it may help just a little, but thats easy to think that sat here without the experience you have had first hand. its just time is running out, only a couple of years before i hit the 45year cut off point so its now or never, but i suppose i can at this stage look at other states if it really is that dyer in Perth!! will keep you posted. cheers Andi
Skit78
Hi to all i to am worried after reading all these posts, I am coming out in July to activate our visa, I have been plumber and heating for around 17 years I only have my Nvq level 2 and my unvented but mainly work on my own installing heating systerms , unvented cylinders bathrooms ect. When I come out in July for 3 weeks would it be worth going to sort out any courses to gain my licence for when I make the move over in early jan? Or should I just wait till jan to sort this out ? I'm just thinking it may save me a bit of time and I'm hoping to get to work as soon as I arrive witch may not be the case after reading these posts. But I will do anything to start earning $ as I can not be out of work. Also I hope to have around £30000 to take with us,there is me and my wife. this money would be for a car and courses for me and rent and things to make a new start would this be enough to keep us goin for a while. My wife hopes to get a job ASAP when over there. But any info on the plumbing side of things or the address for the plumbing course would be great ie where to go ect. Great Idear about you lot starting up your own plumbing company and just imploying Brits, can you do this b4 jan so when I'm over ill have a job LOL anyway good luck to you all scott.
