Guest SaraBee.74
Hi All, Our six year old daughter is likely to need a kidney operation before we head to Perth in September. Has anyone had an experience involving after care and follow ups post surgery. And does anyone know if this would be covered by the reciprocal health agreement or would we have to go private. Any information or leads would be gratefully recieved as it's getting us quite anxious.

ali
I think that some employers on 457 insist you have private health cover. I don't know how the reciprical care works to be honest
nickym
Hiya we are here in Perth on a 457 visa after arriving in April this year after being here only 4 weeks my 15 year old son was taken to hospital for emergency (major) surgery and spent time in ICU, all together he spent 5 1/2 weeks in Fremantle hospital - the care he recieved whilst an inpatient and outpatient was fantastic, we have no private health insurance so was all done through (there eqivalent to NHS?). we had to get health insurance initally for 1 month in order for the visa to be granted we just made sure when we arrived we signed up to medicare straight away, I think you can ? get private insurance if you want to go to a private hospital just as you would in the UK ? other than that you can go to public hospitals which are less short staffed than UK ones , Wasnt what we had planned for our new start in OZ, If you need any further info just message me Nicky x Edited July 17, 2012 by nickym
ali
Hi nicky, I know reciprical health care is given for emergencies - not sure about follow up on existing conditions. I don't know if this link will be any good http://www.humanservices.gov.au/customer/services/medicare/reciprocal-health-care-agreements

Guest SaraBee.74
Thank you for the link. I fear they'll be a lot of head scratching amongst the doctors when I raise this. I was hoping for a fluke in as much as someone having a similar experience with follow up care but the info's a great start.

Jo1977
Hi SaraBee I found this on a website: [h=3]Health Information for Overseas Visitors to Australia - QRMFN[/h]The Agreements do not allow for visitors to access Medicare or the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme where the treatment is not immediately necessary. Prearranged and elective treatment is not covered. I looked into having follow-up care following a fracture and I found I would have to pay for it privately. lol Jo
