jamesw
Hi all Currently a PR on a 175 visa and I will have been here for 4 years in November. That now means I can apply for citizenship. Question, can I start the citizenship process before the 4 years or do I need to wait until my four year anniversary and then start the process? verystormy
You have to wait till you qualify.
jamesw
I thought that was the case. Thank you.

kips
I thought that was the case. Thank you. As soon as you qualify put in your application as it could take a few months to process as there has been a big spike in the number of people applying to be citizens. Levi
It's 4 years, not 2 ?? I have to update my information. What does the process involve? Tests perhaps, to see if one is worthy of becoming an Australian citizen?

Nutnudger
Forgive me but are there any benefits to becoming a citizen?
debbiedavo
You can apply on the anniversary of when you first entered Australia as a permanent resident ....good luck and congratulations, can't wait til we do ours
Levi
@Nutnudger: as far as I know Australian citizens can get Australian passport and then come and go as they please. Permanent residency holders - again, as far as I know - must get Resident Return Visa : http://www.immi.gov.au/e_visa/rrv.htm Cheers

Thanks for any advice. Jim Yes, I drive the trains for the PTA. Unfortunatly, they have just finished recruiting and have taken on 15 new trainee drivers. They won't be advertising again for some time now.

ali
The process for citizenship is that you must first pass the citizenship test before submitting your application. We completed all the necessary forms and took them with us on the day of the test so that we could submit them once we'd passed (confidence lol). They check your details, passport, birthcertificates etc., and then they do checks. We were told it could take a day to several weeks depending on how quickly they received information. Ours came back in just over a week. You nominate which shire you want to do your ceremony and then wait until you are invited to attend. Again, some shires you will wait longer than others (we waited about 12 weeks). You are not a citizen until you've actually had your ceremony. Salmart
Has anyone in the Rockingham Council region applied for citizenship lately. I am curious to know how long it took to get a ceremony date once you received the letter to say they had approved the application (after passing the test). And then how long after the ceremony to get the passport. Thanks, Sally
Guest vijnit
Somebody mentioned to me that you can get your tests and some preparation done by the DIMIA people ready for submission on your 4th anniversary (Maybe even a few months before that) rather than wait for the whole process to kick off on the 4th year. Anyone aware of this whether its true ? Having an Aussie passport would make sense (with Dual nationality with your British one), rather than having to renew the PR Visa every five years, and besides you're still a guest of the country as a PR, until you finally become a citizen, which also makes life easier getting out of the airports - rather than queuing up in those non citizen queues ! Remember ! - you only have to do something to annoy the Australian govt as a PR and its goodbye to you "Visa Cancelled" ! Off you go where you come from
Levi
I would also like to know the answer (opinions) for the above question.
