Hi all !

We will be arriving in January , i have a couple of questions i am hoping someone will be able to answer .

1) Childcare : Aged 2 and 4 , can we get them into childcare 4-5 days a week ?

2) If so , what would be approximate cost ?

3) Of which how much would be subsidised ( We are a couple hoping to earn maybe $80k PA total)

If anyone can answer these questions it really would be greatly appreciated . We are flying over for a fortnight in September to check things out but would like to gather as much information as possible !

All the very best

Probably not what you want to hear but this was in the West Australian this morning =

WA's childcare sector is at breaking point, with critical shortages forcing parents to cut back their work hours or resort to hiring nannies.

The Federal Government's MyChild website, designed to help parents find childcare vacancies, claims 170 of the more than 400 centres in Perth have full-time vacancies for infants up to the age of two.

But only 50 of the 155 centres that responded to inquiries from _The West Australian _had full-time vacancies and many of those only had room for one or two more children.

Forty-two centres were completely booked for 0-24 month olds - with waiting lists as long as 12 months - while others had part-time availability.

Debbie Mashford, from Goodstart Early Learning in Edgewater, said the shortage was partly the result of more parents returning to work sooner.

"In the 13 years I've been in child care I have never known demand as big as what it is this year," she said.

Leederville Early Childhood Centre director Alisha Berry said she had stopped taking applications for 0-15 month olds because the waiting list was too long.

"We had to close the waiting list, we can't even put their names down," she said.

"Some parents are a little bit upset and frustrated because they are hearing the same thing everywhere and they feel there's nothing they can do."

Mary Yacoub, from the Meela Child Care Centre in Mt Lawley, described the waiting list for the babies' room as "phenomenal".

"We are fully booked, we've had some parents waiting since February for a place, it's crazy," she said.

WA Childcare Association president Evan Hicks acknowledged there was a crisis in the sector.

"I can't think of a time when there wasn't a crisis for baby places . . . because of the higher cost involved," he said.

He said babies were far more expensive to care for, requiring one carer for every four children, compared with a one-to-10 ratio for older children.

The association is calling for a 30 per increase in the childcare benefit for parents of under-threes, which they claim would encourage more parents back to work and allow centres to fund more places.

"Provided there is more money for those under-threes, centres would be more willing to have higher numbers in those age groups," Mr Hicks said.

"The Government is getting huge revenue for all these parents who are going to work and not having to pay them the Family Tax Benefit."

The association's chief executive, Rachelle Tucker, said the shortages were most noticeable in inner-city areas.

She denied there was a crisis but said the biggest issue was affordability, with prices likely to rise further owing to sweeping national reforms.

The reforms will force centres with more than 26 children to employ early childhood teachers from 2014.

Ms Tucker said operators would have to increase fees in order to employ more staff.

Goodstart Early Learning State manager Todd Dawson said the company's 45 centres across Perth and Mandurah had an average occupancy rate of 75 per cent, with at least one vacancy in each centre.

Mr Dawson confirmed Goodstart, Australia's largest childcare group, was in talks with the Federal Government to offer more flexible opening hours to meet the changing needs of families.

Federal Minister for Early Childhood Kate Ellis said the Government wanted to remove the obstacles to longer opening hours at childcare centres.

"So many parents have the stress of having to ensure they rush out of work by ten past five to get through the traffic and collect their children by 6pm," she said.

"As Australian families change and Australian workplaces change, we need to ensure that our early childhood services also adapt to meet these emerging needs."

Hi Jess . Same here , we got the thumbs up in October and we really lost interest in going to Oz , we applied a long time ago just out of interest . We lived there for 2 years in 95 -96 and havent been back since ! Now we have 2 kids in tow it promises to be a great adventure , theyll be ups , downs and all sorts but i reckon , after some serious deliberation that it is the right thing to do for our young kids . I will let you know how September goes , we will be looking at childcare foremost so i will let you know what we find out . looking forward to January more though , as we have 3 weeks holiday in Thailand on the way out there :-))

Jess

Hi Jess Yeah we had a great time . Found out what we needed to and had a relaxing holiday in the process . Immigration was a doddle , we went to Perth CBD to get a visa sticker in our passports to keep it easy when getting jobs , rentals etc . Also went to Margaret River wine region which was beautiful . Leaving to go back on January 24th so buzzing now ! When are you off ? Andy

Hey guys.

Good luck with childcare...my god i thought i wouldent actually be able to work as i looked from Joondalup up to Karrinyup/duncraig..>Eventually got something after looking...but id put your kids name down now...or you will struggle seriously...although you will defo get in Kids Biz in Wanneroo....but we took our kids out as was terrible..long story but no way near UK standards..

If your coming on a PR visa you will get uo to 50% back off Govt in rebate..otherwise you will be looking at around 140$ a day for 2 kids. Your oldest is at Kindy age so defo get her down ata school for 2 days a week..and dependant if ya going public or not that will potentially be free dependant on the visa your come on?? Im not quite sure though..

We got our 4 year old in kindy at Whitfords Catholoic school 2 days a week and its really cheap....so maybe worth looking at???

good luck...(oh and BTW defo dont put your children in Goodstart Banksia Grove...They have places too...well they did)

Hi there are good start any good ?? and does any one recommend a really good school and nursery ?

Hi there

Depends which area your looking at moving to really??? Good start are expensive.. But in fairness I only went to see one and I didnt realise at the time it was a rough area but it put me off.

We are in Mullaloo and we have our kids in Beldon ELC which is ok...I hear the one one ine Beaumaris Ocean reef is good..If you want my advice..Wherever your living put you name down at a few becuase when we came we only found 1.

Ocean reef high is meant to be good. But we have one of our children in Whitfords catholic primary which is very good. Catholic schools tend to be better,....Im my opinion though..

Private schools are good but the best one I think is St Marks Anglican school Hillarys but huge waiting lists.

Most catholic primarys are good and fairly cheap so no real cost implication.

State schools are meant to be not as good as UK ones. and thats froma few people i know plus also an australian teacher.

ave you checked out careforkids.com.au???? that will tell you all the nurseries around and vacancies??? Id ring a few and get childrens name down.

hope that helps

has any one tried family day care in australia it is the same as childminders in the UK and from talking with schemes in australia it looks as if there are a few around .. it is what i plan to do when we come to oz :)

Hi Jodi

Just make sure you have your childrens name down in a few child minders as i tried that and they were all full or they could only take 1 child or both kids on different days. It has been a nightmare...

Just to back sweeping generalizations up with facts -

the best one I think is St Marks Anglican school Hillary St Mark's was 37th on the top schools list published by the Curriculum Council which gives details of exam results.

State schools are meant to be not as good as UK ones. and thats froma few people i know plus also an australian teacher.

Check this out - world rankings - http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/datablog/2010/dec/07/world-education-rankings-maths-science-reading

Depends where you live as to how good the State school is but overall, Australian education produces better results in world rankings.

Hi Nikki . Thanks for the advice . We have looked at Lake joondalup + 3 program , have you heard anything positive about this one ? Also , we checked out Whitfords Catholic , l;ooks very good . Might be ok for the Eldest , but what about the 2 yo? Can he get in there in any way ? Andy

Well actually we went to see it. And they had just moved to Wanneroo old school. And my god we saw a child take a pee out in the play area and nobody even said anything. It looked like a prison with barbed wire round the fence. Ran by English but standards were poor.

Just been to see a lovely one actually. Goodstart ocean reef. On marina boulevard. Just got the right feel. So going to put ours in there after Xmas. As there's a waiting list.

Nic.

Hi Jess . We have permanent residency as my partner , Celina , is a hairdresser . We applied 4 or 5 years ago when that was on the Skills list . We weren't going to bother going but business has been crap this last year so we decided to go ahead and take the plunge ! We stayed in Hillarys , which was nice . Its a little expensive compared to some other suburbs a little further inland or north . We will be looking to live from Hillarys upwards to Butler . Yeah we are looking forward to it now , get the Christmas holidays out of the way then all systems go ! Where are you hoping to live ?

Hi Nikki how about Goodstart Tapping ? We have been offered a place there but are unsure whether to take it ? Any help appreciated Andy

Hi Andy

my advice is this. Take the place as tapping is fine I think. The only Goodstarts that didn't look great was the one in rough areas. Like Banksia Grove. We just placed ours in Ocean reef Goodstart and its lovely. But I'd ring a few in a 10km radius and just out your name down. For starting whenever as there's no charge. And take the Tapping one and if ya don't like it you have options to change.

As many nurserys as ya think and take iinto Consideration where you may end up living etc

Sure Tapping will be fine though.

Nic
